according to the manufacturer you can use embroidery floss, haven't tried it yet and it reccommends to not use 4-ply. acrylics work great.
used peaches and cream 1 pound cone which is cotton. it didn't spin as smoothly, had to push it down the things most of the time. averaged 12 inches in 10 minutes.

@susyranner2009 If you want extra fine cord, you could always make it by hand with super fine yarn. Either make yourself a spool knitter (tiny nails on top of a wooden thread spool or similar, maybe even "carv" out 4 needles on top of a pen with the ink cartridge taken out and cut off so you have a "pipe" and use that as a knitting nobby/bee/nancy - some plastic knitting nancy's look pretty much like that. Should be easy with a Dremel tool or even a knife and file)

I think the thickest yarn you can use is 4ply (fingering) or maybe a thin DK.
