Never heard of this lady before today, but if anyone critisizes a performance like that, they are in serious need of an arse transplant, this was perfect in every way, she really lives the part, and i am very, very, impressed.
Absolutely wonderful, wonderful singing! Truly beautiful and exquisitely technical.... How could anyone could be cruel about this level of artistry is beyond me!
Whatever the flaws that some YT viewers have pointed out, she had the guts to do a diminuendo off the top b-flat in this aria....very admirable. Most sopranos avoid that and over-emote there since they can't do it. Sylvia is a fascinating artist. I wish I could have heard her in live performance. She's very beautiful and the YT clips show her accomplishments as a good actress. How unfortunate she did not sing for very long.
Sylvia is not Maria Callas. She is wonderful all by herself. Her voice is powerful, beautiful and dramatic. I wish she had lasted longer; but thank god we have many of her wonderful performances! I suggest all her asshole critics find talent like hers and direct their enlightened opinions toward voice instructors who are ruining many talents today. To criticize her voice is pure ignorance and negative critiques superfuluous!
Absolutely astounding. She brings tears to my eyes. This is the real thing. Puccini would be pleased. Ah beautiful, sweet Sylvia - what you might have been if only you hadn't pushed yourself so hard. But we will always love you!
I fell in love with her music in 1979, when I bought her album "Sylvia Sass Dramatic Coloratura (Lamberto Gardelli conducting the National Philharmonic Orchestra). Oh God, what a voice! Amelita Gallic-Curci, Rosa Ponselle, Maria Callas . . . and Sylvia Sass: they are among a handful of sopranos who have left a record of artistry and ability that has been so seldom achieved in the last 100 hundred years.
She`s fantastic, really fantastic, a great Tosca, so... well, for me it's sounds a little like Maria Callas, maybe i'm wrong because it's my personal oppinion.
In her beginning I saw a fantastic Traviata with her in Budapest, later she sang at La Scala Manon Lescaut alongside Domingo. A strong voice that should have lasted longer
@bicobotscho ......i obviously love Maria Callas doing this, but i also love Angela Ghiorghu doing it....now i have to add this lady, all beautiful performances but all different, and i have no favourites, they are as good as each other......i love them all , such wonderful god given talents.
"Her exceptional vocal and dramatic talent prompted some to hail her as the second Maria Callas. However, perhaps as a result of having taken on too much too soon, her voice deteriorated early, and by the end of the 1980s, she had all but vanished from the operatic scene. In recent years, she has settled in France, where she keeps busy painting and giving masterclasses." (from Wikipedia). O don't know anything more.
What a pity her career ended too early. If she had sung 30 years, we'd have had the chance to see her on stage today. What an emotional singing ! Yet in 79, a few years after her debut, she breathes very frequently and her high notes have large vibrato and are screamed.
very beautiful. there's something vulnerable and quite affecting about her voice. I enjoyed this far more than I did those videos of her singing Medea.
provate ad ascoltarla senza guardare il video. ad orecchio direi senza dubbio: è la callas!=)

She's so slender. I can't understand how a powerfull voice could be into a very delicate figure!

She tries to imitate Callas voice and gestures.
The voice is not even.
Her piano loses position/bearing, so also her low register.
At the high forte tones she has a non-appealing vibrato that reveals her strain.

This version is very strange. Something funny with the tempo in some parts, the phrases are cut in some places, etc. Good voice.
