WILLIAM POOLE DIDN'T HAVE TO BE A GOOD PERSON HE JUST DIDN'T BELIEVE IN FOREIGNERS RUNNING THE COUNTRY AMERICAN'S BUILT THAT'S PART OF OUR COUNTRY'S PROBLEM TODAY LIKE THE MAN THAT KILLED POOLE WAS A COWARD LONG LIVE THE NATIVES.
@thenative19848 I agree, but I also know what you mean by "foreigners" are niggers, mexicans, russians and asians. Are Irish, polish and Italians foreigners too or are you ok with them.
You know the director is amazing when he can make it feel like ur not watching a movie.....but u feel like ur actually watching two people conversat with each other!
@captainroger Yea but the whole feel and setting is set by the director, dont get me wrong.....DDL is the master of acting imo bar none no one better, but u gotta give it to MS!
@blubirdTN- agreed, and I usually love Leo DiCaprio (Departed) and Camron Diaz (Something About Mary), but this movie would have been sooooo much better if it put more emphasis on the villian, like in There Will Be Blood. I think for all the work Lewis did transforming into the Butcher, they did not give him enough screen time. Funny thing is, despite being a sadistic sociopath, Bill is the most honorable guy in the film , way more honorable than bitch ass Amsterdam, sneak thief hooker, or
I remember seeing this in the theater. This speech, along with the entire performance, left me in shock, literally. Film is the great medium of our age. This speech is so full of feeling, conveys so much about who the character is and how much he believes in what he must do. I think this is better than Daniel Plainview. Plainview is really another part of "The Butcher".
I'm convinced Bill knew who Amsterdam was from the start but hoped to mold the kid into his surrogate son, and when learning Amsterdam wanted to kill him, mold him into his new worthy enemy.
You know after I saw this scene for the first time I literally thought that Amsterdam would join Bill's cause for real. Daniel Day Lewis was that convincing in this scene that he made me, the viewer, forget about all the horrible things the character Bill the Butcher had done.
DDL makes everyone else he co-stars with look like shitty actors in comparison

I should probably link this as a response whenever I see someone calling Leonardo DiCaprio the best actor ever, lol

incredible scene, performance, and film. Why isn't GONY more highly regarded?

@reboandzooty Too much focus on Leo & Cameron Diaz characters. If this movie thad revolved around Butcher Bill, a perfect movie.

The way Day-Lewis delivers the word "Fear" after the long pause is why he is the greatest actor of our times.
