  • Thank you so much! You have made an eight-year-old Whovian extremely happy! He wanted a REAL bow tie for Christmas, but was distraught and at a loss for how to make it look right. He wanted me to let you know, "Bow ties are cool."

  • @Lillith70 Thank you. He will do very well. Bow Ties are cool and classy.

  • The shoe lace analogy bought it all home. At 27, I can now go to my father and brag of a new talent that not even he, the gifted man himself, couldn't do. Thanks for the lesson, sir!

  • @soulchild3751 You are very welcome. Thanks.

  • The best.

  • @MrSLOWTHUNDER Thank you.

  • I have searched for an hour, but thanks to you i got it! Thank you so much!

  • @tjtweedel You are very welcome.

  • THE BEST BOW TIE VIDEO MR FRANK SINATRA WOULD BE PROUD!

  • THE BEST BOW TIE VIDEO MR FRANK SINATRA WOULD BE PROUD!

    ;)

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH! I FINALLY GOT IT! haha

  • @TheOkstate You are very welcome.

  • thanks a lot, from all the videos i watched, i learned the best from you and finally got my bow tie right:D

  • @ripmullet You are welcome. Thank you for the nice comment.

  • Now I know why Tucker Carlson and George will do bow ties, They can't tie a regular tie, they are not coordinated enough.

  • You have single-handedly made my high school prom a huge success! I never thought I'd be able to learn how to do this

  • @gexrus Thanks. Just one more thing. You must now kiss each girl who straightens your tie. It is your duty.

  • @Featureman Gladly

  • This is the best bow tie tutorial on youtube.Thank you much sir.

  • @shba110011 I thank you very much for your kind comment.

  • my, but you look sharp! thank you very much. the shoelace analogy was very helpful.

  • @Stevendagger6 Thanks.

  • thanks so much your're awesome.

  • @TheEHMProductions Thank you so much for the nice comment.

  • You're great! Thank you so much for helping! :D

  • @jooka27 You are very welcome.

  • how long did it take you to learn how to tie a bow tie after getting the job as a movie extra?

  • @MrPoliceman15 The first day I worked with a bow tie I learned to tie it. It was probably on Gangster Chronicles about 1981. Thanks.

  • I watched your video several times and I finally figured out how to tie aft messing around will it I did figure it out. although I tied it a little differently. I did figure out that it look alot easier when you watch someone else tie it.

  • @mrlinker99 Thanks. The tying is the easy part but it takes a little bit of time to shape it.

  • I tried umpteen diagrams and at least 5 different videos without success until I saw yours. Why didn't anyone else say "just tie it like you tie your shoelace and then straighten it"? Mission accomplished 3 minutes after viewing. Thanks!!

  • @stubagnall You are very welcome. I was surprised when I first learned how easy it really is.

  • how did you learn how to tie a bow tie?

  • @mrlinker99 I worked as a movie extra for many years. I wore bow ties and formal clothes very often. I learned from the wardrobe people. Thanks.

  • The shoe lace analogy was so helpful! I always had trouble making the 2nd loop, makes so much more sense now...

  • Thank you.

  • hey man ive been up all night looking how to do this and this is the absolute best video thank you so much you saved my butt i have a project to present tomorrow and this was what i needed, thank you again.

    Justin

  • You are welcome. Good luck with your project.

  • hopeless....too many steps skipped

  • thanks sooooooooooooooooooo much you made look so easy

  • You are welcome.

  • Haha! ^.^ Thank you very much, my problem was the last part. Other videos I was assuming they thread the whole end through and not bow it/only push through half of it so the 'tail' still hangs out from behind. Thank you.

  • You are very welcome.

  • finally got it. thanks a bunch

  • You're welcome. Thanks.

  • Thank you! I am 51 years old and have always wanted to solve this great mystery.

Just hearing that it's like tying a shoelace and I was on my way. (I also watched several other totally useless videos before trying yours, which saved me.) THANKS!!

  • You are very welcome. Thanks.

  • than you very much!! you're great!! greetings from italy

  • Thank you. Greetings from Tennessee.

  • i've watched like 3 other vids, and this one was the only that mentioned it being like a shoelace. THANK YOU!!!! i finally got it=D

  • You are very welcome. Thanks.

  • hahaha his knot looks retarted at the end!

    XD

  • Which part should be in the front, the folded sides or the ends?

    Thanks for the great video.

  • Both One side will have a bow and the other will have a flap. Thanks.

  • I looked at almost all of the online videos and got confused. Your explanation and examples are by far the best! The oatmeal box was the tip that worked beacuse your hands were not obstructing my view. I thank you and my Mother(she taught me how to tie my shoes). One more time, you are the BEST!

  • You are very welcome. Mom is always right. Thanks.

  • You make that look so easy. Make some tutorials on how to tie a regular necktie.

  • Thanks. I might do some more wardrobe vids.

  • Wow! thanks! I'll be able to tie the bow of my little brother! My mom was so impressed that her 16 years old girl tie a bow for his brother of 6 years old! He like so serious with it! Thanks a lot! We had so much fun!

  • You are very welcome. Your brother will be a well dressed gentleman.

  • Good video. Thanks for the post. What kept you from tying the bow tie while the shirt collars are buttoned down?

  • My fingers move more slowly now because of arthritis. The best way to tie a bow tie would be with a collar which has no buttons. Thanks.

  • Best bow tie tutorial on here. I did know how to do it, but I forgot the last step before shaping and all the other tutorials complicate it so much with the angles and how they explain it. Yours however, well, top marks! With a black tie dinner tomorrow it was much appreciated.

  • Thanks. One thing to remember is to not get it too perfect. It is good to have a tie that has a slightly imperfect knot. That shows it is not a clip on and it gives people something to do with their hands as they become familiar with you on a friendly basis. It is like carrying a kitten in a basket, people will gravitate toward you. People wearing bow ties will get some special attention. Thanks again.

  • So its something for the ladies......? Haha

  • Ha, you're hilarious. I think I'd try out for the Orville Redenbacher auditions if I knew where the heck they were.

  • Thanks. Orville was a pop star or popcorn star.

  • good vid. Really helped me out.

  • Great. I am glad it was helpful. Thanks.

  • A great guide, getting ready for a black tie bash wont be such a pain..it really helped thanks..

  • You are welcome.

  • Many thanks. This was the first tutorial I've seen that really helped. I'm still 'shaping' it but I've gotten further than ever before! Thanks very much. Much appreciated. Pete.

  • You are welcome. One hint for shaping; if it does not seem to hold its shape going clockwise, try counterclockwise. Go beyond the horizontal level and let it settle back and tighten the knot again.

  • thanks for this...!!

the first bow tie tutorial I have understood and made my first bow tie !! :)

    thanks a lot !

  • Congratulations. Thanks.

  • Whats that symbol noise in the background?

  • I didn't hear it. It might be part of an ad.

  • this is the only tutorial that ive found that says its the same as tying your shoe laces... and therefore makes the most sense

    *****

  • Thanks. That seems the easiest way to describe it.

  • It puts the bowtie on the can, or else it gets the hose again. (Yesh it will, Precious, it will get the hose!)

  • Thank you, perfect tutorial video. I can now go to my best friends wedding looking really smart. Once again, thank you!

    Håkan from Sweden

  • Thanks. Have fun at the wedding.

  • cool video thanks! Also found this website with some pretty sweet designs ill def be rockin one of them.... J. Cravata has sweet ones

  • That oatmeal can looks ready for it's big tv commercial.

  • It needs its own YouTube channel. I remember as a kid all the things that could be made with the circular oatmeal box. They looked like that back in the 1940s. Some things don't change. Thanks.

  • I agree

  • Thanks for posting!!!! I never learned how to tie a bow tie in 38 trips around the sun!!!! Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You are welcome. Enjoy trip #39.

  • There's a song that comes on classic country radio Dear John. You have any idea who sings it?

  • The original Dear John Letter was by Ferlin Huskey and Jean Shepard. Not sure of the spelling. About 1953, from Bakersfield. Capitol Records most likely.

  • I'm afraid that bow-ties and regular ties are a dying art.

  • Thanks. The 1930s to 1950s movies showed street scenes of people who were dressed in suits and ties going about their shopping in downtown areas. Even the photos of breadlines in the 1930s usually showed men with ties. The ties will make a comeback someday as fashion cycles change, but it is good to be in a casual age.

  • I can't find a loop to pull my tie through... Also, I don't do my shoe laces like that so it's difficult. Nevertheless, your video is the best of the many I've watched so far.

  • Thanks.

  • Thanks from London England for your little video- a sterling effort but alas I still can't get correct!

  • You are welcome. The tying part is easy but it takes some time to shape. Also try a heavier cloth bowtie if a light one has a tendency to not hold its shape.

  • I have got a Marcella Sized Bow Tie which is 100% cotton and I got it from Gieves and Hawkes so it is good quality and heavy material so I think it's a case of a bad workman not being able to use his tools!

  • Finally get it. Thank you! :D

  • It is so easy but pretend you spent a lot of time when people ask how you tied it. It is fun to wear one once in a while. Thanks.

  • Thanks a bunch. I saw many tutorials here and none were as detailed as yours. It's funny because I've been practicing for a couple of hours on a Quaker oatmeal container as well :). Good job I finally got it!

  • You are quite welcome. The oatmeal box does have some uses beyond holding the cereal.

  • That was very helpful! thank you sir. this is my first ever comment on youtube.

  • Thanks.

  • You are a very good teacher

    Thank You very much

  • You are welcome.

  • awesome tutorial. I tied it on my first shot!! =)

    Spot on good chap!

  • Thanks.

  • Thank you, that was most helpful. Much appreciated :)

  • You are very welcome.

  • This was fantastic. I looked at plenty of other videos and I thought I was doing something wrong. The last step really is the key. Thank you so much for going through it slowly and easy to understand!

  • You are welcome. Thanks.

  • GRACIAS DESDE MEXICO DF!!!!

  • You are very welcome. Thanks.

  • thankyou soooo much

i guess ill be the only guy in my school that knows how to tie a bow tie

you made it look so easy with the shoelace thing

    kudos to you, kudos

  • Tell the other students it is much too hard to tie for you to show them. Thanks.

  • lol thats a good idea... ill do that

  • you are the man!!!

  • Thanks.

  • That was such a good description. And yes "Shoelace" method, that was what made me understand haha.

"Yes but doesn't his bowtie look nice"

    hahaha You are awesome!!!

Although I'm a girl, I'm definately wearing a bowtie one day.

  • Thanks. Bowties are fun to wear at times.

  • Wow, great video. I can't believe no one else just said "it's like tying a shoelace". Made everything so much easier. The shaping advice was already really good. I tied a bowtie correctly about 10 times and redid it before I realized I had been doing it correctly and just needed to shape it.

  • Thanks. It is true that it is very easy but most people who try to explain it make it sound difficult.

  • WOw, nice video, all the other videos didn't say anything about it being like a shoelace, i got it first time just by feel, i didnt even look in a mirror but i did after and it came out perfect. I tried 100 times with all the other videos and you made it so simple, thanks

  • Thank you. It is fun to tie it and somewhat simple and easy. A sailor's tie is much harder to get shaped.

  • THANKZ SO MUCH BEST VID...

  • You are very welcome. Thanks.

  • thank you so much--- this is the 9th video i watched and this by far was the best one!

  • You are very welcome.

  • i just tied my 1st bow tie and i ran to show my sisters and my mum; i am so proud of my bow tie now haha :)

  • Great. The bow tie is a very nice addition to one's wardrobe for special occasions or just for fun. Congratulations.

  • Thanks for the awesome video!!!! I am going to look really debonair at my holiday party.

  • Thanks. Yes you will but be sure to take a box of oats with you in case you need to practice.

  • thanks for posting this- I have to learn to tie a mans bow tie from behind for our annual christmas ball at university, which is worrying me, as all of the guys are going to be relying on me. eek!!

  • Thanks. I have never tried tying one from behind, but I have tied them for other guys from the front. That is pretty easy. It also gives you a chance to choke them if they are not behaving.

  • Nice. This makes me want to wear a bow tie. I've mastered the regular business tie, but this looks interesting. I might need this skill one day.

  • The bow tie does have a certain classy look that one can use once in a while but not always. Thanks.

  • Thanks for posting the video. I'm going to an awards dinner and this has helped me out so much.

No chance of winning an award but hey at least the bow will look good:)

  • The bow tie does belong at the awards banquets. They kind of look classy. Good luck.

  • Bless you that was excellent

  • Thanks.

  • i think you made my dream real :D

Since I was a kid i wanted to use such a tie, instead of the 'fake' ones (the ones where u have metal hook, and u don't have to tie them).

I'm a musician, thanks to your vid now I will be able to tie my new bow tie. But I have to practice a lot, it's not easy at all! :)

  • Thank you. Have fun and enjoy making music.

  • Thanks for the information although I never wore a bow tie in my life I might get one one day and try it out. I know how to tie a tie but not a bow tie.

  • You are welcome. Usually I don't wear them, but occasionally it is a fun way to make a statement.

  • Thanks ! I Have Just Bought A Bowtie To Go On Holiday With (Its A Complicated Holiday) i was going to wear a clip on bowtie but D.I.Y Bowties Are So Much More 'Lay Guarentee'd' thank you everso much, the main ti[ was 'like a shoelace! Ciao, Chewy x

  • You are welcome. I also was surprised how easy it was to tie the bowtie. A sturdy cloth makes a better looking bowtie.

  • Hey man i am from england.

I have my Prom at school and am the only guy that i no of going in a tux. i was going to wear a clip on bow tie (i have a proper wing neck collar on my shirt) but i wanted to go traditional. Your explanation is so simple and easy to follow.

You truley are a genious. My prom date and life long love will be so impressed.

Much respect out to you dude.

    10/10

    Legend

    From Joe The English Gent!

  • Thank you, Joe. Remember to be a genius at tying a bowtie is to pretend it is very hard to do and don't tell the secret to everyone. Just the legends like ourselves.

  • After bashing my head into my mirror for an hour trying to learn how to tie this blasted thing for the first time, I stumbled upon this video and everything just seemed to fall into place. Thank you so much for the help. Now, I can't believe I couldn't get it tied in the first place.

  • Bow ties were invented by aliens who want to take over our planet while we are trying to tie the darn things. Thanks.

  • Thanks featureman, I'm glad I finally learnt this, and you made it easy.

  • You are very welcome. It is fun to wear a bowtie once in awhile.

  • thanks alot it's really helping

by the way: i have to say youre incredibly funny

  • Thanks, Timmy. Wear the bow tie with a bathing suit when you go to the beach this summer. Bow ties are great.

  • Thank you! You make it look simple. Life saver!

  • Thanks.

  • yes

    thanks alot

  • You are very welcome.

  • Bow ties should now make a big comeback... but I'll resist parting my hair down the middle or wearing knickerbockers. Thanks.

  • Bow ties and Derby hats. Instant character. Thank you.

  • You almost choked that poor ol' oatmeal box to death, yanking on that bow like that.

    Got to be more careful,

    they have feelings too.

Seems like no one looks out for

    oatmeal boxes but the BigLon.

  • You are welcome Joe. You will look great in a bow tie.

  • Haha very good Tutorial. I always wondered how it was done, and i thought it was very complicated. but apparently its not too hard.

    Thanks Tom.

  • My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this video... he was just talking about how to tie a bowtie last week (neither of us have any idea!), so it's very timely!

  • Yes, you look marvelous Tom!

  • haah ur amazing

    <333

    lol 5 stars!! :D

  • I love oatmeal!

  • Me too. I have probably averaged a bowl of oatmeal every day for the past 50 years.

  • No matter what the subject you can find it on YouTube! Had an English teacher who always wore a bow tie so now I know how he tied it. Kinda like bow ties actually. Thanks.

  • Thanks.

  • Alternative Title Suggestion: 'Why They Made Clip-Ons'. XD

Thanks, Tom! Useful info ... maybe. But your vid has me rethinking my High School fashion choices. Are you saying, if I'd lost the skin-tight Levis and jean jackets - and worn a bow-tie, I'd have won the heart of a cheerleader? Could've used you 25 years ago, Tom. No bow-tie and no High School Cheerleaders for me. =(

  • Thanks. Yep. Cheerleaders love bow ties. Especially if you wear it without a shirt. Clip ons are good too and safer. A bow tie does give a guy an instant classy look that makes you look rich.

  • Thanks for being Fonzie to my Ritchie. I'm off to buy some bow-ties. Woo hoo! Daddies, lock up your cheerleaders! XD

  • An after-thought to something you suggested in your Reply... That 'cheeleaders would like it if I wore a bow-tie without a shirt - and that clip-ons are a good option.' ...Uh, if I'm NOT wearing a shirt, er-r, ...what exactly am I clipping this bow-tie onto? ...If it's what I think it is, I guess you're right when you say, it'd 'give a guy an instant classy look'!

Wow. You know ALL the tricks, Tom! Thanks for sharing!

  • 1st comment rofl

  • The best dressed box of oats I've ever seen! You're the best Mr. Featureman!

(by the way, my wife has a crush on you... geez!)

  • you make it look so easy. I loved the commentary while you were trying to get it on. The fact that after having this shirt years after Dear John was on air and you still fit into it deserves 5 stars. lol yes, i too would be interested in a straight tie tutorial. hubby does not know how to tie one and the last time he wore one, I had to call my brother long-distance to have him walk me through. Older adults such as myself do better learning w/visual aids. lol thanks, Tom.

  • Thank you all ways wondered how to do it.

  • This video is destined for greatness. Top work. Glad to be one of the first. Love your work!

  • Bow ties are the extreme nerd's standard tie. I'll never use the new information I've just learned, but 5'd anyway.

  • Bow ties are the extreme nerd's standard tie. I'll never use the new information I've just learned, but 5'd anyway.

  • Never knew how to tie one..
