My theory on why people hold onto conspiracy theories is the false need to belong placed into their heads by society conflicting with their desire to not conform, which non-conformity is a natural desire for humans. So the seek these "outside groups" to cling to instead of creating their own persona. But when this is challenged their theories have to be extended in order to hold water, needing more people convinced to be sustained.
The part about Rosie is a great example of how people try to make other individuals look bad if they dont believe in the same thing. She says that building 7 collapsed in 9 seconds not one of the main towers. Conspiracy theories have always captivated me since I was a teen, the only ones I've every truly believed are ones from history. Modern day ones tend to be full of Chinese whispers. That may have had a possible truth to them at some point that's been lost along the way. The reason it's easy to see that gov. bodies are involved in conspiracy is that the laws of probability make it impossible that no matter what laws are passed under a governmental banner of political intent to benefit the best interests of the greatest number of its own people, the opposite turns out to be true more often than the laws of probability would allow. I think the better question would be "why do so many people refuse to believe that conspiracy does clearly exist?" Conspiracy is only a "theory" because those involved call it a "theory" as a ploy to throw sheep off the trail. Conspiracy theories have always captivated me since I was a teen, the only ones I've every truly believed are ones from history. Modern day ones tend to be full of Chinese whispers. That may have had a possible truth to them at some point that's been lost along the way. There is one thing I'd like to say though, a lot of the time these conspires like 9/11 detract from whats really going on in the world, it's not that people are Retarts as you say, they possibly are escapists.

Personally, I listen to conspiracy theories only to see what they have to offer. I cant just let the government tell me something and automatically believe it. At the same time, I dont just buy into a conspiracy theory that easy etiher. We may never know the entire truth about 9/11, or maybe we already do. IDK. But alot of things the government tells us is not a complete story. They did not release photos of a deceased Osama, why? There are still uncertainties in Obama's birth certificate. Why?

To your list I would add: a sense of political disenfranchisement or personal powerlessness over some aspect of your own life. I imagine any study would show conspiracism flourishes where power and control are lacking.

Since when were the 9/11 theories debunked? The plane doesn't fit in the Pentagon hole. It's physically impossible that a plane could fly that low, lose winds, and then break up. Plus, they think that a guy that could not even control a Cessna 172, yet he can complete a 355 degree turn and break laws of physics. I absolutely agree that people will shut out confictling evidence, but this can be said by the conspiracy supporters and official story supporters.

9/11 'fully' investigated? It took over a year to get an official investigation STARTED! 9/11 Commission commitee were denied 1/3 of requested documents/evidence they requested. Bush and Cheney refused to be interviewed separetly and on the record (audio or written transcript of the interview.) Hundreds of eye witness testimony (most FIRST RESPONDERS i.e. cops, firemen) conflicts with the 'Storyline'. Along with dozens of coincidence's all occuring within such a tiny timeframe.
