The whole point of the cowboy thing is to show how politicians, republican politicians, tend to do certain things to appeal to white male voters... things that would make a white man say "I can drink a beer with that guy". What help exactly have blacks received? WHEN? Back in the 60's and 70's? And what have they done for the black community? NOTHING. Yeah, you will probably try to bring up affirmative action- but that's a horrible example. AA would have NEVER gotten passed but for the provision to include women... and who most benefits from A.A.?
The fact of the matter is, politicians DON'T help blacks... to the entext that they DO help blacks, their policies actually HURT the black community or has no effect whatsoever. What politicians USUALLY do to look like they are helping blacks is a) appoint a black person in this or that position and that's it (Colin Powell, C. Rice, David Satcher, etc) or b) behave in ridiculous ways that might appeal to blacks (Bill Clinton playing the saxophone, Hillary Clinton "talking black", etc)
It's a delicate line for politicians... they WANT the black vote, but at the same time they don't want to alienate CORE VOTERS (the white and the elderly) who tend to look down on any pandering to the black community. What tends to happen is that during the Democratic Primary, the runners try to appeal to blacks w/o promising anything to them and then forget them during the general election.

Gotta love Michael, taking the cynical level down a notch. It's an historic piece of artwork, that's why it's being put up. How would this placate the black community whatsoever? Obama isn't stupid, he knows he has to actually DO something that actually fixes the problems, not just hang a painting. It's completely unrelated. Only thing I would disagree with Shure on is that I'm pessimistic that Obama wants to do anything to fix the problems: it doesn't seem to be a priority at all.

It's a delicate line for politicians... they WANT the black vote, but at the same time they don't want to alienate CORE VOTERS (the white and the elderly) who tend to look down on any pandering to the black community. What tends to happen is that during the Democratic Primary, the runners try to appeal to blacks w/o promising anything to them and then forget them during the general election.
Because Obama is black, he ignores blacks altogether so as to appeal to whites and elderly.

So the question is not 'whose idea was it to put up the painting?' it's more 'why did he agree to hang it up?'. I don't care about the strategy or the political move, I care about jobs. What you can do to improve conditions and while Black leaders are criticizing him, they still are gonna vote for him. So I don't get what they are complaining about.
PS: A professor from UCLA wrote a piece from the Huffington Post. My how things change. He doesn't realize that 2+ years ago Obama won the "diverse" vote. But if he loses in 2012, is a lose-lose situation. After all, we'll all be racists if we vote him out.
