I am interested learning about in both the Pony and Master controls. We think we finally found a D318 engine and hope to proceed with restoration this winter. Thanks.
The demo is great - thanks. I would like to learn more about your machine. When my Dad passed away he left us a virtually identical D6 with the pony etc, but no one seems to be able to tell us much about it. This one is not yet running and has a Hyster Winch and the controls look the same as yours. We plan to restore it. Any chance you could shoot a short clip explaining what each of the levers is for? Thanks again.
@dieseldave71 How long did it take you to get the turbo rigged up? I have a few spare 3304DITs for my equipment. I have a 225 and a 215 that run thet engine. The other 225 has a 3208. The D4D has a 3304PC . I want to take the turbo off one of the spare DI engines and put it on the D4. The Elbow comming from the turbo to the muffler is available. But the rest of the oil and air lines I have to fabricate. The book says I need to put piston oil jets in the place of the pluggs. But I may just try it
@Cassiiir A "pony" is a small gasoline engine- a 15hp opposed twin in this machine- that cranks over the diesel engine to start it. 24v electric systems weren't common back then, and this is the system Cat used to start their diesel powered machines. The pony engine's exhaust pipe runs through the diesel's intake manifold to warm the incoming air and it shares the diesel's coolant as well to warm in up while i's cranking.
nice dozer. I just bought some land and they threw in a d6 dozer just like yours.Never drove one but I guess there is a first time for everything.LOL and help with pre start checks would be nice.HINT
Give me the old iron anyday. No computers, no electronics. It's all mechanical and you don't have to be a Phd or hire your dealers mechanic with his laptop to come out and work on it. Sweet dozer Dave.
well, you know what they say- everything's for sale LOL I'm not really looking to sell it, though- I'm sure it's worth more to me than it would be to anybody else
I was making an access road and a small clearing for the test well crew to drill their wells. The site is for a new high school. They're clearing it for real now, too bad because it was a nice piece of woods.

lol where did you find it and i love the sound of it it has a reaky good sound lol :p
leedwolf 2 years ago
It's a 9U. The parts book shows a field changeover kit to put a turbo on it, but I've never seen one. The turbo on mine is from a DT466 IH.

Why are you clearing the trees?

Pony start and a turbo? Is it a D6-A or B? I thought the 9U's were in the pre-turbo era. Interesting.
kfd238 3 years ago
That thing runs awesome!
jizzmonger 3 years ago
That looks like a D6 9U. I use to run one of those when I was 10 years old. Our didn't have a turbo.
JetSnake128 3 years ago
that sure looks like fun its got a great sound thanks

Hey dieseldave71, Do you have rope holdin the muffler on that chevy too?
mford739 4 years ago
That's wire, good sir, not rope. I try to save the rope to start the pony if the battery goes dead. The exhaust on the Chevy is wired on, too.
dieseldave71 4 years ago
If I had a Dodge I would probably have to use the rope to hold the muffler up, though
dieseldave71 4 years ago
Come on, not everyone can have a Dodge. Someones got to be at the bottom of the food chain.

@mford739 THE "EXPERT'S" (who ever they are) say there is no chance for Crysler not to bankrupt? Why is that? Because they are so good?
