I'm sure this tip has been posted many times before, but if my pipe starts to 'gargle', I carefully push a pipe-cleaner into the stem and down towards the bowl. It absorbs the excess moisture straight away.

The gargling is NOT from saliva, its actually extra moisture from the tobacco. Backdraft, a LOT and it will dissolve and exit the pipe through the top of the bowl.

I work at a cigar shop, and the way that i re mousin dry pipe tobacco is; I take the Two way humidity paces that come in cigar boxes (Torano, CAO, Fuente, Rocky Patel all have them). I put them in a zipper bag with the tobacco, and wait a cupola of days. After that the tobacco is mostly good to go, if not overly moist. I know at where I work, we just throw them away, and I would not mined giving them to customers if they ask.

I don't really know a lot of ways to keep tobacco humid, however I have heard about the apple trick. The way I do it is to lightly wet a cotton ball wrap it in tinfoil and poke some holes in it. This seems to work pretty well in a pinch. Great vid CHS, cheers!

This will fluff the tobacco enough to get at the unburned bottom of the bowl without letting all of that ash settle right on the bottom at the pipe bowls hole.

I disagree on the whole bowl-stir in a 3/4 finished pipe. I tried it after watching this video and what I found happened more often then not was that all the fine silt ash settles on the bottom and ruins your draw on the pipe and the taste gets stale and ashy. I agree, get your tools pointy end out and stab, or puncture the bowls contents and try to peel the edges of the bow to the center after each outer bowl diameter stab.

When I pack the pipe and light the first time it has a tendency to burn a hole down the middle. Next several lights burn the tobacco closer to the bowl. When it gets down to the bottom 1/4 instead of stirring, I discard the remnant. It doesn't taste good to me after stirring and my imagination tells me it is full of tar. I use the Frank method of packing and my first true light most times lasts 20 minutes where you seem to light several times in the first 5 minutes. Verdad?

You can smoke weed out of these kind of pipes, but...I don't recommend it. It wastes a lot of the good smoke and it's just a hassle. Get a glass pipe for it. Just an FYI to the people asking about smoking weed out of these.

Here is my method: Take the "blade" section of a pipe tool and very gently break up the ash (just the ash, NOT the coals) and tip the pipe sideways over an ashtray to clear it. Gently so as not to lose embers. I do this first to make sure all I get is tobacco. Then finish your smoke. (You may have to take the blade and stir up the remaining tobacco. Re-tamp and relight if necessary.)

Pipe tools you get from a tobacconist, they are cheap. You have to puff on your pipe periodically to keep it lit, but unlike cigars, relighting is won't make it taste bad at all

I just got finished smoking some captain black and it seemed to have a little better taste than some others I have tried and also smelled very nice. Personally, I get tongue bite when I smoke this fast. Also, I taste more tobacco when I slow things down bit, and it doesn't get as wet. To keep the pipe from going out, I dry my tobacco some and pack it properly (I'm still getting the hag of the Frank method).

True. Plus the correct technique - packing the remainining tobacco in a slant fashion against the draft hole - or stirring as you suggest.

Also the 'right' pipe. I like bent pipes, and because of the angle of the shank, they are prone to have the draft hole drilled a bit high in the bowl - again, due to the angle of the shank. I have a Dunhill like that, impossible to smoke to pure ash.

Beginer pipe smokers should just smoke and enjoy, wait about the 'all ash' thing till they learn the basics.

PS - I know of no better way to get 'tongue bite' than to keep trying to light the dottle (last bit of tobacco left in the bowl, which may be damp) in the bottom of the bowl.

It is stoved (little or no taste - probably bitter) and as I said, may be damp (which will produce steam when heated up trying to light it).

Pipe smoking is a very personal thing - I do try to smoke all the tobacco in the bowl - but if I don't, so what - pipe smoking is about taste and enjoyment.

CHS, When I first started smoking a pipe, I would hear all these folk bragging about smoking every lil crumb of tobacco in the bowl down to a 'fine white ash' - I thought that was the maek of an 'Expert Piper', so, I tried to copy them. The last bit of tobacco is strong, you can crack the bottom of your bowl with heat, and I did burn a draft hole in one of my pipes. So now if if I smoke to the bootom, cool - if not, cool too. It is all about enjoying your pipe - an NO EBOBO, LOL!
