its for editing. if you film a days worth of skating, thats alot of film to go through to find the tricks that were landed. If you put your hand in front when the skater lands a trick, or its a cool shot, its then easy to find the shot when fast forwarding through the footage. look for the hand in the shot and you'll know where the good footage is.
