'Shinining hair and shining skin, shining as she reeled him in. To tell him like she did today, just what he could do with Harry's house, and Harry's take-home pay'.
She's uncharacteristically nervous here and flubbin' on the words didn't help her state of mind I'm sure. And btw: genius and "mad" typically intertwine so she would have to be a little mad to be such a creative producer, composer, writer, singer. I'm sure she may agree with you Jack, but THIS kind of madness, I'll take it any day.
She is a force of nature like Mozart or Schumann. She is like Picasso. Never after hearing one of her songs do you forget it. We are blessed to have her. Everyone who knows about her knows that she has sacrificed much to her art, and we should all appreciate the gifts she has given us. Even if you don't like this genre of music you must acknowledge her genius.
Joni Mitchell? She has been my artistic touchstone and inspiration since her first recording. When you can love, enjoy and be moved by an artist for that many years, it says a world of beautiful things about them. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, has ever used music that plants the most beautiful painting in your head as she has done. Thank you, Joni, for every beautiful song. It means the world to me!
@butfulmuz Your line about planting a beautiful painting is perfect. The effect that Joni's voice and lyrics is very important to me, you just summed it up.
These lyrics are truthful, and beneficial about the woman who was/ has been/ is subserverant, men and their papers, their lives, what looks good for them, she lived it, wrote about it and sang about it. She was there just as alot of us were and are.And as I understand a 360 turn around in the 2000's attention has come into the female dominance, as the person in charge in a divorce, or domestic dispute.

Joni's open tuning on a Parker Fly midi guitar......(no pickups only the midi pickup) with some chorus or delay on the effects along with her wonderful open hand picking style makes for one funky/bluesy/melocholy sound.......
@jacopman just an FYI... back in maybe the 90's, she began to experience some debilitating physical after-effects from her bout with polio at an early age. It was making it nearly impossible for her to constantly re-tune her guitars as was her custom during a concert. So she started to use one of these guitars to make the playing and tuning process possible and physically tolerable. Check out "Tiger Bones" on "Taming The Tiger". It's just the guitar track of the title song. SO beautiful!
Joni's voice in this is nothing short of amazing...It's bollox when people say her voice is 'shot' now cos of smoking etc....Just listen to that richness and sublime tone...1000's of wannbee's out there would kill to sound like her, let alone be capable of writing a song of this calibre.
I can always count on Joni using an unusual tuning. She always did, and always will. Unlike others, I like her lower huskier voice just as much as her clear soprano. It opens up another sound for her.
That is really cool. I am a Joni Mitchell fanatic, and unfortunately she doesn't do a lot of public performances any more. It's good to the rare ones she does.
Thanks hjenhenstoll for the post and all your other Joni videos--this gal is so much better before an audience than in a recording studio (and she is plenty good in a recording studio too) that such video performances are treasures to behold.
and she sang this on the rosie o show - a show many stay at home moms watched and maybe saw themselves in the song. people loved joni when she wrote about the pain in herself - she became less popular but a more trenchant artist when she turned her gaze toward what other people were experiencing. the hissing of summer lawns is a sacred text.
Hey, With what she's had to put up with..she is entitled to make a boo boo...and yes,,hope she quits smoking......in a few years we should be seeing many aging "rockers" leaving this world...better enjoy them while we can..
I wish she would too, but she is nothing if not damned independent. I don't want to read her obit before I shuffle off this mortal coil. She's a treasure and has given me hope and contemplation for decades. And I know how hard it is to give up the true evil weed; i.e., the Indian's revenge. It took me decades before I cold-turkeyed my way out from under.

A victory for suppressed housewives everywhere.

Yay - my favorite Joni quote:
"He opens up his suitcase
In the continental suite
And people twenty stories down
Colored currents in the street
A helicopter lands on the Pan Am roof
Like a dragonfly on a tomb"
Love her to pieces

She recovers well after she messed up that line.
I remember watching this on TV back in the 90s.
I didn't notice the mistake at all back then' because I was just blown away by her overall performance.
