i am currently laid off in elkhart and you shouldnt talk about things you dont know about...the problem with the rv industry is that when the housing market crashed banks quit lending...NO LENDING NO MONEY!!businesses could get supplies and people couldnt get loans if they were approved it was at a very high rate...and just so you know elkhart has many other industries not just the RV's and they where all hit by this effect..THINGS TO BLAME ARE BANKS, LOAN OFFICERS, AND THE HOUSING MARKET!!!!

You're missing one major factor on RV's. They are the Teepee's & Wigwams of today; a temporary and mobile housing unit. That is why the government uses Elkhart's capabilities in emergency situations for housing that has been destroyed.

They only need a good destructive storm again and it will start up all over again.

I would like to hear how you think the entire town of elkhart should "re-tool" and "retrain" on little or no money. i dont think that is possible but i would like to hear how you think it is.

and where is the money to "retrain elkhart" going to come from? i live in a town right next to elkhart. i know A LOT of people who either work/worked at an rv factory or rely on someone who works/worked in an rv factory. the fact is is that making rv's is all most of these people know. i agree with you that these people need to be able to learn another trade but its not as easy as "oh, well lets just retrain elkhart" there is NO money here for that.

You can retrain yourself for little or no money.. where's the American spirit gone to?

haha! im not really sure where your going with the quaker comment. they didnt have currency, they had resorces for trade. thats a huge difference. another thing, elkhart has been on the map making rv's long before this economic meltdown. the reason why this town invested so much into a "luxury" item is because up untill around idk, sep. of 01, people had money to buy luxury items and this town flourished because of it. i dont understand what exactly your beef is as far as us making a luxury item

lol.. I have no beef at at.... It's a high risk market based on the cash flow of consumers.. if the cash isn't flowing.. it's a high risk business.

@montyloree many small suppliers to these closed RV factories that went out of business I think some were not utilizing technologies... its quite possible if these light industrials that all went down with the RV MFG'ers ... if they had retooled and broadened their market to other parts of the country, I am quite sure that there are plenty other avenues to sell window shades, upholstery, draperies and curtains... goods that all went into building these luxury mobile homes.
