Even this part of the mission is quite fascinating to watch. Re-entry/spashdown/recovery is engrossing stuff.
For some reason, today's shuttle missions aren't as intriguing. Watching a pilot land the shuttle like an airplane is ho-hum compared to watching a capsule that's just come from space passively splash down in ocean water that has to be at least a mile deep, & then watching the astronauts & Navy frogmen operate in said water.
@svetaswan true....also, the Apollo capsule has to endure considerably more heat due to it hitting the atmospere at speeds nearly 8000 mph faster then the shuttles return.
@svetaswan Not only that, IMO the Saturn V is a far more impressive vehicle than the shuttle. It starts out slower at launch, but rapidly catches up to the shuttle in speed and altitude around the 4 minute mark. Much larger and more powerful than the shuttle, though I guess that's to be expected given the amount of fuel needed to get to the moon as opposed to getting into orbit. I wish I'd have been alive to see the Apollo missions.
