  • IN the beginning That flat collar is low on her neck and probably triggers a pulling reflex in the dog- its like she's excited to see the dog and is enjoying the feel of pulling and jumping on the end of the flat collar. The gentle leader just took all the fun out of the barking and pulling so she calmed down- plus she got some treats.

  • I'm not seeing this dog as aggressive, but reactive, and as someone else mentioned, this could be over-excitement.

I thought the same thing about the pressure on the nose loop being the same as on a collar, but not really--there is no pain. It is still an aversive though.

And like all videos/TV I don't assume the length of this video is the length of the training that went on.

  • I just want to add that I don't really know why the dog was reacting. Viewing this again makes it look as though maybe the dog was barking and reacting because she was overly eager to visit the other dog. But it is funny how sometimes a fearful dog is extremely attracted to the object of its fear. A dog can be fearful of other dogs at the same time that it is curious about other dogs, and wants to check the other dog out.

  • This is a demonstration of how a reactive dog can be helped. The reaction is because the dog is fearful and wants to chase the other dog and handler away. We don't do dogs any big favor when we get all emotional and reactive to their behavior. This video clip convinced me to use head halters more often to help dogs learn to relax around other dogs.

  • Very sad to see this clip. It looks so easy teach you dog to like other dogs in a minute. Why is this dog reaction like she is? Her reaction is a symptome of a underlying problem could be insecurity, fear, pain etc. Changing a emotion takes time and can not be done in 3 minutes. These two trainer should know better.

  • @nanalazar25 She is not trying to change the dog's emotion... Simply it's behaviour. The trainers are not attempting to teach the dog to LIKE other dogs, just to behave politely when it sees them. Jean Donaldson is a VERY good trainer - look up her track record. She wrote multiple books - 'Culture Clash' is rated #1 by the American Pet Dog Trainer's Association. She is also the director of the SanFran SPCA. Trust me, she is VERY well qualified.

  • Is anyone seeing the obvious?

Canines will counter restraint, with their energy. In other words, you hold a leash tight, they will pull, you don't they won't. Simple!

Training collars when used improperly are destructive, not the collar itself. You need to know the level of prey drive, and handler competence, before you decide on method.

    JMO'

  • Apparently some viewers below didn't see the other clip, where you condition the dog's emotional response to the halter first. Thanks to things you as well as Susan Garrett have been posting, and now I'm understanding how smart head halters are. SO much more gentle and effective than a choke, prong, chest/leg restriction or any of the other crazy management tools out there. Great clips.

  • Just curious how in this case the gentle leader is any different that just hanging the dog with a choker chain or pinch collar. YIKES! What about a little counter conditioning? I agree with the other comment. That dog does not look aggressive.

  • It can that way because it is not an aggressive dog
