  • Thanks to the spanish army and thanks to the civil war, we are living on developing country.

  • The Republic was a democratic elected government, and the rest of the world just watched it die by the hand of ultra-religious fascists

  • A truly complicated conflict. The one thing I can say is no dictator has EVER ran a country without terror as their right hand man. For a civilian fight against 3 armies takes balls.

  • GOD BLESS FRANCO !!!

  • Viva Franco, abajo los perros comunistas

  • k so Soviet support of Spain's republic was basically nonexistent so in actuality, this war was between the people of Spain and their newly elected republic, and Francisco Franco's Fascists who were intent on overthrowing the republic and establishing a military regime.

  • At least Franco kept the Spanish Heritage alive unlike the communists who sought to destroy it.

  • @vithum youre such an idiot

  • To all of the commies and anarchists out there, what was the point in murdering priests and nuns and destroying churches? I can understand some of the reasons why they were fighting, buy why the blatant murders? There was something very diabolical going on there.

  • I see your point, and in that context you are somewhat correct. I lived in Chile when Pinochet was in power. I could go in and out of the country.

But, show me a fascist country today....... I can show you a number of communists countries that today , will not allow their own people to leave. Cuba, N corea, China, etc. But in general, I agree with your statement. Like my dad used to say..." comunists...fascists...it's the same s***t with different flies......

  • civil wars are sad affairs.....fascists murderers...comunist murdereres.....choose your poison... But, I'd rather live in a country that allows me to leave it if I don't like it. Try that in Cuba or the one old communits nations or modern north korea.

  • @squadman33

you think fascists let people "leave your country if you don't like it"? Try getting out of Nazi germany.

fascism and communism= mirror images of each other. both totalitarian and unfathomably cruel.

  • Hey, no praying that would not be very communist of you! (00:25)

  • you have a very skewed image of communism based off of a corrupt version of it which formed itself around stalin.

  • Dude he's international brigade, not communist.

  • But the international brigades were communist volunteers, weren't they?

  • True, a lot of them were but certainly not all, and plenty of the american volunteers weren't... but who can say i guess...

  • @saturdayboy The majory were but not all

  • The Republicans recruited my Grandfather and others in the town, and then, the Commander asked for someone that could make cofee.

My Grandfather said "me", and then he became the cooker of the division.

He never shot a single shoot.

But at the end of the war, he was taken prisoner, and liberated a few months later.

  • mussolini and franco's fascism was not banking on "racial purity" like hitler's because of the darker colord soldiers in their armies. the church, landed aristocracy, and bourgeoisie depended on franco to maintain their semi-feudal control on the country. the civil war was the most extreme expresion of the class antagonism between the rulers and the ruled. which side am i? lets say i would spit on franco's grave. -greetings from a socialist in the philipines! Never again! No to imperialism!

  • I really think this movie is leftie-biased. "Too late to save the spanish republic"... why should it be saved by Brits or Franks? Let the Spaniards decide or fight it out by themselves. In the end, Franco saved Spain from a much worse debacle called WW2.

  • Of course, it is pro-lefty. The authors strive to evade to state that had not the conservative part of Spain rebel, the whole country would habe been 'stalinised', i.e. became one big GULag like Soviet Union.

  • tosser, franco saved nothing, he conned the US. To quote Roosevelt "he may be a son of a bitch, bit he's OUR son of bitch"

And that, pal , is why the B 17's didn't bomb the shit out of the bastard in his little hidey hole in El Pardo.

    Get a fucking life.

  • sinitskyd,

It certainly favours the Spanish Republic over the Fascists. No bad thing if you ask me. It doesn't hesitate to criticise the Stalinists, though. Again, no bad thing.

    Polishman1,

Ahistorical nonsense. It was the Nationalist rebellion that gave Stalinism a boost in the country. Before the Civil War in Spain, Libertarian and Democratic Socialism were far stronger than Stalinism.

  • they were not comunists maybe some of them they where libetherian comunists and anarchists comunists want powerful state and goverment and in spanish civil war there was no goverment workers directly control the economy and thosw who fight against freedom they re nazis

  • Foreigners do not understand half of our country fought against the comunist and revolutionary plans of the left parties.

Franco was not a fascist. Thanks God he saved Spain from the comunism

  • You're right. Most people today are so poorly educated about what happened in Spain that they actually think Franco was a fascist even though he only enacted ONE fascist policy in all his years in power - allowing the formation of corporate unions. That's it. That's the full extent of Franco's fascism. Franco was a traditional military dictator (a military hero for many years by the way before the war) who desperately wanted to free Spain from communists, anarchists. Thank God he succeeded!

  • You're both disgusting apologists for a regime that killed thousands of people. Free Spain from Anarchists? Don't make me laugh.

  • Anarchists, acting indepedently and against the wishes of the CNT or the FAI, murdered about 2,000 people, most of whom were supporters of the fascist coup or played a significant role in the oppressive system that existed in Spain prior to the 2nd Republic. That pales in comparison to the Stalinist Red terror, which claimed 40,000 lives, and is dwarfed by Franco's white terror, which killed 200,000.

  • @TheHarlequin13 Stalin killed about 20 million russians.

  • @TheHarlequin13 Oh, and sorry for being so rude, you are welcome to give your opinion, I don't remember why I was so rude, maybe I was pissed off with something. I lived and worked for 3 months in England (Erasmus scholarship) and people were usually very friendly. But just understand people may tell you a lot of lies about Franco regime, it certainly wasn't the best thing that could happen to Spain, but much better than communism. By the way, II republic was an absolute disaster.

  • @TheHarlequin13

    Stalin 40,000? try 20,000,000

  • ok, you do know that you're actually pulling a bill o'riely here? you have it backwards, and by all of europe i assume you mean germany.

  • read a book

  • Already did.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheReolus Well obviously. Me being British instantly disqualifies me from understanding or analysis whereas your Spanish nationality naturally imbues you with all the knowledge of the requisite facts one could ever hope to learn.

I take it from your nonsensical rebuke that you are, in fact, a nationalist?

  • @TheHarlequin13 Yes, when you don't live in Spain, even if you read a lot, you can't fully understand what really happened. You can just understand a bit. I have family who fought against the communists and vice-versa, my grandmother, grandfather, parents, etc... Lived when Franco ruled Spain, so I certainly know a bit more than books, many times manipulated, can say. But I'm glad you like history, it's always well to improve your knowledge, congratulations.

  • @TheHarlequin13 And what do you mean with nationalist, a Falange supporter? Or just a normal nationalist? I mean, to be nationalist is different from supporting Falange. You can be nationalist and liberal at the same time, Im sorry if you can't understand me properly, my english is good but not pefect, so I may struggle a bit to explain you certain things.

I support liberal parties, I support capitalism, so I'm not "nationalist" if you mean Falange nationalists, who are anti-capitalist.

  • @TheHarlequin13 If it wasn't for Franco, Spain now wouldn't exist, I should just remind you that. And if you don't live here you can't really know what happened and what is happening now with separatists, they brain wash children against Spain, etc... it's horrible.

  • @TheReolus In what sense do you mean that Spain wouldn't exist? Did the Nationalists prevent it from disappearing into the ether by murdering 200,000 people?

It's certainly an advantage live in a place when studying its history but it's by no means necessary. Also it isn't conversely true that living in a country automatically grants one extensive knowledge of its history. There are a frightening number of people in my country who don't know who Oliver Cromwell was.

  • @TheHarlequin13 Stalin? 40,000? Get the fuck out of here. 20,000,000

  • @Rao665 StalinIST. During the Spanish Civil War. The conflict this video and discussion is about. Unless you think Stalin killed 20,000,000 Spaniards during the Spanish Civil War, which would be quite a feat, given that the population of Spain at the beginning of the war was around 25 million.

  • @TheHarlequin13

Yeah, and I'm talking about Stalin and Communism.

STALIN not Stalinist. And by the way your a disgusting apologist for a regime that killed 20,000,000 of their own people. StalinIST get the fuck out of here. Now your joking!

And I still find it funny how a foreigner to Spain will attempt to explain their OWN HISTORY to them. Typical British shit, you guy's thought you were the answers to the world's problem.

  • @Rao665 How am I an apologist for Stalin? Because I didn't mention crimes that were taking place in the USSR during a discussion on the Spanish Civil War? Don't be ridiculous.

I've already covered your second "point". I doubt you've really read my post, seeing as how you've jumped on a single post in the attempt to label me an apologist for Stalin, nor do I think you'd read it if I reiterated it, so I'll leave it there.

  • Economic lobbies and Catholic Church in Spain will never let people to be free. Whenever spanish people arise up to conquer their freedom they will be crushed to the ground one and over again. Here, Franco is still alive ownes this disgusting and false pseudo-democratic government.

  • all people are divided.

  • You have razon. But therewas gods and bad. The fascist was killers.

  • Spanish people are divided.
