Greetings, I have a cow trailer and I was thinking of putting a leaf suspension on it. It's only a single axle trailer but how do you work out how much weight for the amount of steel to be applied?
@krazyhartin A good spring shop will be able to recommend aproper set of leaf springs once you tell them the weight. They will look at the "spring rate" (stiffness), travel desired (deflection) and total load carrying capability. In classic terms for a LINEAR spring.....F=KX where F is the force, K is the spring constant and X is the deflection. The math is non linear for leafs but is fairly clear cut.
Had a ? doesn't it weaken the frame when u put too much bolts ro is that just a dumb ass ? that I am asking and if so I am sorry for. Solid work man great job very clean everything turned out shoot den Aloha
@mauiboisugi No honest question is ever stupid. Tnx for the compliment on the truck. You are right that drilling holes makes it weaker. But even more important is where you make the hole. The holes you see here lower the strength about 2% in transverse flexure about the neutral axis. Translation: It is the top and bottom that takes the bending load in the Z axis. The sides hardly carry any of that load. Drilling hole in top or bottom would weaken it a lot.
@1966ih U r very welcome I know putting this type of stuff u will get haters but any video we posted but yeah I am not one of them this is a great video and keep up the great work let me know if u do anything with anything else shoot have a good one and God Bless Aloha.
Great looking truck! I saw your winch recovery video the other day and unfortunately thought it was another brand of truck, I apoligize. Go international!
I like it's looks better without the camper section, too. But I camp so frequently in it that I never take it off. The camper section if fully insulated with closed cell foam plus I have a propane fed RV furnace for true below zero F camping capability.
Oh haha I see your point, thats pretty cool set up. I never even considered that, because where I am from in summer you can just sleep on a towel when your camping. Thanks for the replies, have a good one.
This may seem like a dumb question, but im still learning about cars. When you get your car raised, are those blocks between the springs and the axle how it is done?
Nicky, there are many ways to "raise" a vehicle and many different reasons to raise them. Some are just for "looks" and others for a particular mechanical function. Leaf springs with a combination of arching, raising blocks and "shackle flips" are very common. Coil springs and "coil over" 3 link & 4 link suspensions are also very popular. My truck seems high but that is mostly from the tire's large radius. With stock tires it only sits 3" higher than stock!! Ron
Oh ok cool, I have a 1985 Hilux and wanted to raise it that's all. I have friend who helps me out with stuff like this on my car. Haven't really done anything like this yet though. Should be fun.
thats awesome man. i would love to see this in person. your makin me want one of these trucks haha. theirs actually a...i think 74 c10 right around me. i kinda like that. my one friend has a c10, with a 396 bored out to about 402. he used to drag race it alot.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that everything on this truck is either sourced from industrial (big rig) trucks or fabbed / invented by you - Doesn't seem like you're getting anything from the 4x4 parts houses. Is that correct?
It's a very unique way to build an off road truck. If you build it yourself, you know you can fix it!
Yes. Most of the components are either "Medium Truck" such as F600/F700 class or else are custom fabricated. Except for the 49" IROK tires nothing comes from the 4x4 parts wharehouse system. Even my 4 tire chains are custom built from discreet components. My U-joints are Spcier 1710 series that have peak torque limit of 4,800 foot-pounds. A Spicer 1340 series which most 1 tons run is only good for 890 foot-pounds of torque. Thanks for your comments & questions.
Man oh man is that some heavy duty engineering. Love it!

@RatRodSlant6Valiant Thanks! The new springs have held up without any issues so far.

PS: Nice looking rig, I personally think it would look better without the back canopy.

Mmmm, beefy. That front view is my favorite. Very menacing.

Does it ride any rougher with those huge springs?
