When you look at a crash focus on the material damage. Wheels flying off, sidepod ripped apart or the car is barrel-rolling. Then the energy(1/2*M/V^2) is taken away and driver survives. Unlucky ones like G.Moore and D.Wheldon take a direct hit to the head and die, the whole energy s focused in one wrong spot and a human live ends.

I was a British (hell, that hurts) marshal for over 20 years - he was probably right. @Saligano93 His name is Hirokazu Nagaya, it was a "Formula Dream" race that was supporting the Formula 1 event at Suzuka in Japan in 2002. Unfortunately Nagaya was left paralysed (I believe from either the waist or chest down - search on him to find his web site, hasn't been updated in a while, but there may be more info for you on there). The camera-man escaped with a few bumps and bruises.

He was unfortunate with how the car hit the ground the first few times - which put him into that series of nasty 'cart wheel' rolls. The soft ground he hit on the first few impacts just 'grabbed' the car and rotated it even faster. Very, very scary thing to see.
