Lukather is more instrumental to the band. As the guitarist but also as a vocalist like the previous comment says. Kimball among Lukather and Paich sang lead vocals over some of the first Toto hits. He was hired as additional vocalist. Hold The Line, Africa and Rosanna aren't just Kimball either, but also Lukather and then there's Paich to consider. Although I like Kimball; Williams is the best lead to me. Followed by Luke. Williams sings all of Kimball's stuff, his own and more. Respect to all.
Haha... I could not stop laughing when Jeff portrayed Byron as this great guy that they would all get along with... "another one of the guys"... Haha, priceless! You have to look very hard to find a more fucked up individual than Byron!
Jeff is dismissive about all of the past singers here, not just Kimball. Kimball to me was merely partially representative of a certain period of Toto. As were Frederiksen and Williams, with Williams being my preferred lead vocalist. To me he brings out the core of every Kimball and Frederiksen song to his own style, then handles backing vocs as well as his share. But that's beside the point. As said before Jeff has an attitude because of the events that had recently happened here.
Lots of comments about the dismissing of singers. The reality is that singers gave Toto problems. Bobby Kimball had a bad drug problem and was arrested for it at one point. Joseph Williams had a drug problem and lost his voice during the SEVENTH ONE tour. And Fergie Frederikson had a hard time recording and would lost his voice live.
Jeff does dismiss Bobby Kimball as just another singer. They formed Toto because Boz Scaggs turned down David Paich's offer to produce his next album after Silk Degrees. Instead of playing on his next album, they went out and formed Toto.
They were determined to make a statement and needed a lead singer, so collectively, they searched for a singer knowing that they WERE the band.To the band, the singer was a needed piece, but a replaceable piece nonetheless. That's why he has the attitude.
@lindavid39 I agree Bobby WAS a very large part of the success of Toto but the biggest hits ever were the voice of Steve Lukather IE" I Won't Hold You Back ", " I'll Be Over You" just to name a couple of biggies.
Whatever happened within the band as far as lead singers go, that is their business; however, I have to agree that Bobby Kimball, with his trademark moustache, represents Toto in a major way. Bobby was/is also great at stepping back and singing backup vocals whenever Paich or Steve-O sings lead. To most fans, Kimball is one of those ingredients that simply cannot be replaced because of his visual stage presence.
@CaptNemo100 I feel the same about Williams. Each lead brings something unique to the band. From what I've encountered Toto has many different fans who each prefer a certain line-up for a million differing reasons.
I like how Jeff is so dismissive of Bobby Kimball... he just sort of throws his name in along with a list of former singers that he wants to forget about somehow. Oh, you mean the guy whose voice made you famous? The guy whose face and mustache everybody associates with your band every time they hear your name? The one who sang the main tagline hook on every one of your big hit songs? Yeah, just that guy... what was his name again?
he has the "wide-eyed" scratchy nosed coaine twitch even then...

No disrespect towards Jeff of course (RIP).
