  • Having seen this movie ages ago i was pressing the "like" button before the video even load.

  • a different movie with an intriguing ending and great performance by takeshi

  • I love this song what's the name ?

  • @TheAnzdes

It's track 1 on the OST cd for the Sonatine (1993) movie. It was only available for import as far as I know. I paid a small fortune for it back in the day.

  • masterpiece i agree

  • alpha 5.20

  • Saw it today, i liked it although i admit i thought it was a bit uneven.

  • beautiful movie...

  • one of the best movies ever made... definitely one of the finest asian movies of all time... love this movie... must have watched it a few thousand times... ))) here's the review of this movie on my blog: "A Few RandomRantings from Subhasish"

  • What is the meaning of Sonatine in english?

  • @Postalrampage Although it's Italian, 'Sonatina' is a musical term meaning 'little sonata'.

  • @ssshyguy thanks !

  • I think it's my favourite film of Kitano.

  • Awesome film with that excellent tune.

  • Its strange that in Japan Kitano is mostly viewed as just a old comedian and his movies are mostly Ignored, But by Western people in the know its reversed.

  • amazingly raw, real, violence

  • This film is so FUCKIN AMAZING! I wachted it and i loved it.

  • this film would be significantly worse without the amazing music

  • @fig87 can you send me the music

  • My favorite Kitano movie

  • @temperex

    I don't entirely disagree with that 8)

  • @temperex - Zzzz

  • Worst film with Takeshi Kitano I've seen

    Violent Cop's great

    Brother is better than this

Shit even Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is better... just

    But Hana-bi remains ICHIBAN!

  • you would never see this sorts of philosophy and thought in shitty hollywood movies.

seriously, the true masterpieces lie in independent movies, short movies, and everything outside the hollywood degeneration machine

  • Remarkable film.

  • One thing that amazes me about most of Kitanos pictures, is the emotionless attitude and reactions that the characters have towards each other or whatever situation they are facing, its like they have accepted their fate and are fully aware of the outcome of their actions but they ultimately proceed with it.

  • I love Kitano. He's almost like the Japanese Taratino.

  • @Bttscks

Lots of Kitano fans think the comparison with Tarantino to be dishonorable. Kitano is KItano.

  • @poconyanpocopoco Well, that's their damn problem. The almost there qualifies their difference, but to say there's no similarities is stupid, and anyone who thinks it's an insult to be compared to Tarantino has no taste. The both of them are AMAZING, and I think they should both be honored to be compared to each other.

  • @Bttscks

But you never say Tarantino is American KItano, right ?

  • @poconyanpocopoco Kitano is less known in America, where I happen to live, so it would kind of be like calling Bowie the Japanese Gackt. People would have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. It's nothing to do with who I think is better, merely what comparison people would understand.

  • @Bttscks calling Bowie the English Gackt, sorry*

  • @Bttscks

This is the problem about your own attitude to the filmmaker, other Americans are unrelated. I guess there is the disgusting idea USA common sense is the universal standard. But why about Kitano ?though manage to understand about Kurosawa.

But DiCaprio disgusted many Japanese when he came Japan, saying "Japanese Kurosawa is like American Scorsese". We should take care Easy "comparison" damages people's dignity and Pride .

  • @poconyanpocopoco I really don't care. People's prissy little sensibilities aren't my problem. I meant it as a compliment, I'm sure in Japan there's people calling Tarantino the American Kitano, and I doubt Tarantino would get pissy about it. In fact, I doubt Kitano would get pissy about being compared to Tarantino either. As for what their fans think, I care even less, fanboys are always whiny little bitches, and that's their problem.

  • @Bttscks

Be careful, Your easy guess is an extraordinary mistake. No one compares Kitano with Tarantino in Japan, because most people do not see the Kitano's works. I point it out again, this is the problem about your own attitude, It is disgusted at your strong prejudice about Art or People's ideas

  • @poconyanpocopoco I won't be careful because, as another great artist of the cinema once said, frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

  • @Bttscks The only similarity between Tarantino and Kitano is that violence is a recurring device in their films.

  • @vicepresidentfru1tly Don't forget they usually have humor mixed in too

  • Completely different styles of humour. Kitano uses deadpan humour as a contrast to his artful brand of violence, whereas Tarantino uses a heavily verbal style of comedy involving slick dialogue. Tarantino's violence is usually employed as a genre element for celebrating kung fu and gangster films. Kitano also sometimes uses genre expectations, which like Tarantino he plays around with to make something new. Sonatine is a Yakuza film, and yet for most of the film they peacefully play on a beach.

  • @vicepresidentfru1tly They still add both into the mix which is clear, and they are both influenced by similar films. Also not sure if I'd call that peaceful considering the russian roulette, using a gun in the fireworks fight, killing that girls husband etc. Both are great but I agree they have very different styles as well. Kitano doesn't have nearly as much dialogue. The violence is different too though, Kitano uses more realistic violence than Tarantino does.

  • @poconyanpocopoco lol that shouldve been a huge compliment.... scorsese is amazing. kinda makes no sense to me but its whatever.

  • Best Asian gangster film of the 90's, that's for sure.

  • this is not yakuza movie, this is self-referential movie.

  • totally badass

  • This theme song is incredible, I love the combination of Kitano and Hisaishi's works.

  • fellas if you like this masterpiece get the DVD of Kinji Fukasuku's Sympathy For The Underdog 1971 movie (博徒外人部隊) and buy Yakuza 3 (龍が如く3, ) on PlayStation 3 coming march 2010 8)

  • so i wasnt the only one that Yakuza reminds me of a takeshi kitano film awesome

  • the best kitano ever in my opinion.

  • sweet

  • So haunting...

  • Genius!!!

  • Badass!

    ̿' ̿'\̵͇̿̿\з==͡[๏̯͡๏]==ε/̵͇̿̿/'̿'̿ ̿

  • best noir ever

  • Best Yakuza movie ever?

  • Quite possibly...

  • @PresidentRich i haven't seen all yakuza movies but only all kitano yakuza movies and this is his best with hana-bi.

  • @PresidentRich I dunno the Yakuza Papers series was amazing.

  • @PresidentRich i would have to agree

  • @PresidentRich No, best movie ever.

  • @PresidentRich I would have to call bullshit on that one. Brother and Outrage were also classics but Ill give it a shot and get back to you. Anything this man makes is genius

  • Is it just me or the original track from the film sounds a bit different to the one on 'JH meets Kitano films'?

  • No it is not. Cause there are three theme variations one the OST and one of them is on the compilation. But on the "works" series by Hisaishi Jô are two very different interpretations. Worth to listen!

  • For some reason, I watch this trailer like once a month.

  • even containing a lot of violence, it is simply a beautiful movie, a must see!

  • the theme makes me cry.
