I'll always like the Canadian version most because that's the version I first saw, but the UK version has its charms, like the Dragons asking for less equity and not being so opposed to counter-offers.

The idea of the makeup applicator is a prime example of the difference between the UK and Canadian version. In canada they would have straight up told her that idea is garbage and shes a cockroach and will be swallowed whole buy the big huge makeup makers. In the UK they drag it out uneventfully for 10 minutes to achieve the same non investing result. I still ilke the UK version but deff like the Canadian version and Shark Tank much better. Better ideas, more drama, overall better TV

I am amazed how different the UK version is to the Canadian version. The Str8ts pitch and the UNO pitch are perfect examples of how exciting this UK show could be.

I actually hv to agree with Deborah; unless the market value of the biz has leapfrogged from the time the friends invested, why should anyone (let alone a well-connected and powerful ally as a Dragon) be expected to pay so many times more?

@RedTory59 I didn't like the Canadian version too much when I watched it. One contestant pitched a type of bra and the male investors just seemed really sleazy, they were like "I WON'T INVEST IN AN EVIL PRODUCT THAT HIDES CLEAVAGE, YOU DON'T HAVE BREASTS TO HIDE THEM, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO LOOK LESS HOT? *snigger snigger*." It kind of diminished the business-like atmosphere, made them seem very unprofessional. That might not be a problem for some, I just prefer the sternness we see here.

@redavatar You are correct. It is not made clear how far the company had progressed to value it at £200,000. Prior the initial 25% equity share of £3000 cash and £37,000 of marketing expertise, we were a very long way from what we brought to the Den. The packaged product and full order list was not shown. The Romeo Shelf began life on the back of a napkin, through determination and VERY hard work, a fully packaged (with patents pending) product, supporting website and order book was created.

@RomeoShelf - Yes, I agree with you. The most appropriate answer to the question, "How much did so and so pay for their equity stake?" from an interested investor should be "Well, that's not really relevant here, is it?", or if you are American "None of your damn business."

I'm glad they showed Duncan ripping Debra for that impertinent query after that pitch.

All that an investor needs to know is turnover, gross/net profits, NAVs, valuation, stakeholders, patents, projections, and future plans

It's very ... sneaky ... of Debra going "so why am I paying 50.000 for 25%?". It's a stupid question except she uses it to bargain a higher %. The answer is, of course: you need to get a business started and only when it has grown to a real working idea, the value goes up. It's like she'd tell Bill Gates "Well you gave 10% of Microsoft shares for just a few thousand dollars. Why would I pay a billion now?" - at least I hope she's being sly and not stupid or just wanting to be an arrogant ...

@redavatar Except of course that your example is 30 years later, while it's not clear his business has grown at all since his friends got in.

Your point is fair which is why Duncan called her out on it too, but she's right that the business isn't more valuable now than when those "stage 1" investors got in so it isn't worth a higher price.
