can you imagine.......summer in Atl, riding down the expressway 2m in a convertible TR6, top down, clothes coming off....yes I married him. this song & Stanley Clarke will always have a special place in my history. to all other comments, YES THIS WAS A AMAZING TIME POLITICALLY & ARTISTICALLY.
when i was 16 I bought the album. I was on the bus with my purchase and someone asked me what album I bought, I smiled and said school days by Stanley Clarke. He seemed surprised that a teenager would be into Stanley Clarke
Stanley was a musical prodigy at Philly's Roxborough High School and who would have known he would become our generation's premier bassist emeritus. He has played the bass like a lead guitar and pulled it off!.IHe has done it ALL with the bass..classical, jazz, rock, soundtracks, blues,.The only knock is he cannot sing.. but he still tries.. Stanley is the man!!
Cool trivia. The keyboard/synth player on this, David Sancious, was the original keyboardist for Bruce Springsteens's original E Street Band. He is featured on Bruce's first two albums, and the occasional track on Born to Run. Check out his solo recordings.
I bought this album new when it was first released mainly for the tune The Dancer. A beautful and haunting beat and melody. I love the way it starts and the whistle and strings are a cool addition to the song. Stanley Clarke-piano,piccolo bass-electricbass ,Gerry Brown-drums , David Sancious-organ-mini moog, Milton Holland-percussion, Ray Gomez-rhythm & electric guitar. I love when Ray finishes this song with that great solo.
Stanley is a great bassplayer. I listen to his music every time I want to feel good. I heard of him when I was listening to Chick Corea, a musician I admire. Keep on playing Stanley
If you have never seen Stanley Clarke play Live, you are in for a Treat! He always puts on Great Show!! He and other Bass players, got me playing da Bass!! Stan is the Man!!
brought this on import back in the day on the advice of my good friend Kim who passed at the age of 24 still miss him and his advice i'm 54 as he would be now. still love it, i'm trying to get my youngest son into him its a struggle but I'll get there.thanks for the memory.
um, you're listening to stanley clarke, and saying skill is nugatory? I guess that's like me, when i say i love swiss cheese, who cares about the holes?
when I was a kid in the 80's my dad played this album for me. I would listen to this track over and over with my eyes closed imagining my own videos. Hah. Truly great song that you can feel the passion.
Chillidog i agree. i've got thousands of albums in storage that i can;t seem to let go. Lots of stanley. that music also shaped me too. always made the hair my neck stand up....you know?
A local high end stereo shop had this in their demo stack for testing speakers ,that day was considering the merits of some ADS book shelfs, recall Airto 's percussion & Stanley's ,the lead etc.lines came through clear & with punch. nice
am I wrong or are you right? This is not the song "the dancer", this is "Life is just a game" from the same album "Schooldays" I think I've done my lessons well.
If I'm understanding your post, this song is called the "Dancer" it's a Brazilian inspired piece. I've been listening to it since 1976 when I purchased the ablum...lol. You were right at first.
My Twin cousin B& B and loved this album..When a friend of ours layed the album on the bed and it fell up against the heater and warped it..Brett said I will F him up LOL You had to be there I guess LOL But that was over 30 years ago ...man i am really old LOL .
one really had to pick and choose in the 70s to find quality artists - a lot of folks had to work in the disco vein because that's all the market was pushing at that point, so there were some seminal dance tracks that almost transcend the genre - and Jazz-Rock Fusion was a blessed relief during those years, almost spiritual in its joyous energy - brings it all back again to hear it here
Don't feel bad I'm 46 and I purchased this album when it came out in 1976 at age 13and I've not gotten any ladies to like this music yet...LOL. If you do the math that's been 34 years....LOL.
You may have to find a lady musician girlfriend, then maybe? .LOL.
Well I'm actually female in 20's, when I said what I said in past post, I meant finding another female friend to share this joy. But I can understand guy's point of veiw as well. There are so many amazing music in jazz/fusion world which musicians composed wonderful love related tunes for their laides etc... and those wonderful music hardly ever get listened by female which is sad.
Sorry for the mix up, but thank you for sending the post. The Jazz/Rock or "fusion" era was a great time for music. All the artist were composing and exploring so freely.
You're lucky that you lived through 70's. But hey, as long as we stay open minded, there are good music around now as well right? Have you checked S.M.V by Stanley, Marcus and Victor? Awesome album!
I've been the biggest fan of Stanley Clarke since the around 74 when older brother turned me on Jazz/Rock so yes I'm very aware of SMV. What a great trio of three generations of bass. I saw both thier tours (08 & 09) here in DC. Are you a big fan of the Jazz/Fusion stuff of the 70's. The music industry killed Fusion by watering it down by over saturating the market with to many bands that weren't the master artist or bands.
Yes, what you are saying is probably true. But hey, I try to stay open minded to classic, jazz, fusion, instrumental/vocal rock, ambient, world music etc. and I never run out of music to listen! There's always something to discover for and some of those old masters are still young in heart and keep producing amazing records now! Also I am grateful for 21st century. Internet brought us fans from all around the world together! Cheers for now. :o)

Hi, I'm a 53 year old female, and I've been into Stanley Clarke, Return to Forever, Weather Report, etc. for quite some time. If you get the chance, check out Return to Forever's album, "Romantic Warrior". Here, you will hear Stanley at his best.
Yeah, thanks very much. I've had the album since it first came out in 76" as well as all their music. I think some of Stanley's best work as a band member.
It is interesting to see all the comments about Stanley Clarke and this seminal album and how it influenced so many when they were young. I too can say that in the throes of the disturbingly bland 70's I found solace in his music along with Zappa, Corea, DiMeola, and other, also the incomparable Jeff Beck. They provided so much influence that it is a joy to relive his music, ah the joy!
It is amazing that I am reading how many people heard this album at a young age and it had a profound impact on them. I too heard this for the first time at 17 and have been enjoying it for the last 30 years!
This remind me of my brother. He died this summer. Only five yrs older than me. He has tons of vinyl - including this. I will buy it all from my nephew. Cant wait to open these boxes with all this great vinyl. I know my brother would have wanted me to have it. This kind of music made me the way I am - Music was my first love - and it will be my last. RIP
@IMChilidog . I hear you man my brother introduced me to this when I was young too ! I do have it on vinyl also. I'm like you music is my first love and last love too ! Yes RIP brother !
Oh man. I remember listening to this as a 16 year old and totally falling in love with it. And at the same time not having a clue who Stanley Clarke was or that he was the one who put this out. Then 2 years later when I joined the Air Force, my boy DAMEN OWENS (where you at man?) played the album. It was ironic cause we played School Days 100 times before we listened to this cut. I wound up wearin the whole album out! lol
I never liked the music in the charts when I was growing up; my escape routes were bebop and hardcore punk. I also listened to hell of a lot of other stuff, some of it 'fusion', because I thought it would be good for me as a player. Much of it, such as Al DiMeola, I now regret.
Having said that, this is good stuff. Stanley was and is a hell of a player but he could also compose, which some of his bandmates couldn't do. Thanks for posting it.
I'll never forget: a high school party. People were partying to the latest and greatest on the radio... until I broke this tune out on the turn table. No one knew what this music was! But everyone wanted to know who it was by the end of the night. It became a hit to dance to after that. Great post!
Good stuff. I use to listen to this back in the second grade on my dad's turntable when I was board with no friends! lol This music use to take me to another place and still does!
Makes me proud to be a Philadelphian! Stanley Clarke is the gold standard. I saw him 30 yrs ago in Philly and about 10yrs ago in New Orleans. His stuff just doesn't dry up. Additionally, he always plays with the best musicians...Lenny White, Billy Cobham, Al Dimeola, Chick Correa, etc.

This album was the SHIT!! Philly representin' Roxborough High, Stanley is the reason I got into progressive jazz with this album and his prior work with Return To Forever. Gotta Luv it!!
thanks for letting me hear this...........good to hear people still have there copies....mine though was lent out to friend and never got it back..boo.hoo
I bought this as a very expensive vinyl import into the UK in 1976/77. LOVE IT STILL. Have it on CD as well, my 26 yr old daughter loves it too. It goes on and on, generation after generation, like all great art.. Thanks, Stanley!
I haven't heard this since I packed my LPs away 20 years ago. This brings back such a flood of memories and deja vu. Thanks! Stanley was my first real concert in like 79 Norfolk Virginia.
A song for forever.

His best off School Days. This cut got me into Stanley in a big way. It was the first time I heard "funky" orchestration. Fuckin' brilliant!!!

WTF, I thought this was a video site. I don't need YouTube to sit and stare at an album cover.
