@MrTennisMenace what? a backhand is any shot in which a right hander will have to hit the ball on the left side of his body, thus having the back of his hand directing the shot. I mean what I said.
@MrTennisMenace All I was saying is that it is rare that players nowadays hit single hand backhands. Thus implying that Federer has rarer play style. I didn't mean that he had changed the way he played at one stage. You misunderstood it what I meant.
@Zanarkke Or it means that less skilled players are entering the pro rankings. Power is replacing finesse. Even seven years ago I used to watch matches between top guys like Hewitt and Agassiz at the U.S. open. Players don't hardly dive anymore to get a ball at the net, instead they're giving up. The game is more about overpowering your opponent and less about technical ability. This is the only reason why Federer loses to 'underdogs' at times. Power compensates for having an off day.
@Peaceryder maybe you are right, but one thing I noticed about older playstyles is that they use topspin alot less, and hit the ball flat. I know this requires immaculate timing but topspin height and power is a skill in its self. "Baseline" Players nowadays stand way further back to compensate for this "power" and height of the modern day groundstroke. Which in effect causes them to run alot more to reach the angled shots. Also power does not come without timing and skill.
what i like about this video is when they show the shot in the court level angle. you can see how high the ball flew over the net. roger can only hit that shot because he is super fast and has some awesome footwork. i pulled of this shot a couple of times, mostly as passing shots but every time i try to do it on purpose, i'm just not fast enough to get my racquet to the ball early enough to create that angle like roger does. :/
So... Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Jennnifer Capriati, Lindsay Davemport, Kim Clisters, Venus Williams, Amelie Mauresmo, Mary Pierce, Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Justine Henin are garbage.
The frequency of a high quality shot such as this being used is exactly as i said, dependent on the competition. The general level of the women's game is subpar, you have named players who are top level womens player, many retired, and your implication is that Serena plays these players EVERY MATCH? Serena can easily pull off these forehands aganst the 99% of the players she has to play, same with Federer in this example against a subpar playr
it is funny because if you hit that shot at any club level tennis 100% of the times the oponnent will call it out , I have hit balls with that angle (not as fast of course) and the oponent will always call it out .
@venom400 Hell, I've served the ball four inches inside the service box both in length and width and had an opponent call it out. lol, club players...
@circusgal44 It was in, if you pause it at 0:29 its on the line. But at normal speed it looks like it was out, and because you don't see that angle being used that often.
@365to173repubsPWNED truly is superb, the way he just blocks the ball back, with a short swing, using the pace of the ball..he really frustrates big servers, with that return.
Nice video! The reason why Federer has lost to Berdych and Soderling recently is due to lack of intensity from Federer. Federer is a bit slower now compared to his peak.
@iluv10nis It's worth noting, 3 months on from your post, a victory against Berdych and 2 against Soderling, including a double breadstick (6-1 6-1). Of course Soderling was below his game but it's a testament to Roger's desire to adapt his game over the last few months.
@TearTheRoofOff You are right... Federer is amazing. Hope he can continue to face up to the pressure from the press and his fans (like me) to continue to reinvent his game.
@iluv10nis Yeah, I'm really itching to see how the rest of this season and next go for him. If he was to continue his record from Toronto onwards, he will be a force to be reckoned with once again. 2 victories, 2 finals and a semi (with match points remember) is pretty good. People may latch on to the fact he has lost too many finals (Toronto, Shanghai), but he could have failed before that stage. Even in his peak years he sometimes failed to reach finals so let's hope he can keep this level up.
@iluv10nis Neh, you should hear commentators and reviewers commenting on how he is a better player now than he was when he won his first 3 or 4 slams, because he is more intelligent and has a way better serve than he used to.
@iluv10nis I see your comment is one year old but I need to say something... Have you seen him playing in the final three weeks of the 2011 season? That's definitively not slow!!!!!
