  • Superb touch and tone and amazing technique. A great artist, Ivo is. I love the clarity of his presentations.

  • ...in an elegant and transparent piece like this you can really see that the piano is playing Mr. Pogorelich, and Haydn is playing HIM too, he is the instrument, and the composer...would be interesting to see what if things were actually the other way, but with Mr. Pogorelich bitching like this is kinda bad manners or something...

  • Fantastic, fluid and dynamic performance, one of the best I have ever heard.

  • How sadly underrated Haydn has become during the last few centuries, it's a pity.

He certainly was one of the most gifted composers of all time when it comes to overall balance and structure of his pieces

  • He turns the piano into another instrument entirely. It just seems to breath with him.

    Go IVO!

  • Do you really understand how much work and dedication it takes to do this? It is so easy in this days to say me and I criticize without doing anything. It takes a life to play like this. Can you realize? Maybe not....

  • This is a great piece, however who would go to watch someone play this live? cba

  • Who cares what nationality he is. First he does the perfection in life. Isn't it enough?

  • This noble Haydn is so refined. This is an exquisite pianist.

  • Bellissimo.

  • He plays enogh Just, he respects healthily the sonata form. He is still immature - not enough personal, but a nice very boy.

  • @kamvysis You are great pianist? Onlu them may post comment like yours. On, your greatness play something for us. please...

  • @kamvysis

    Who are you?

  • Who cares if hes half serbian, crotian or whatever. You cant sort pianists into "serbian-style", "russian-style" or whatever. this is just stupid.

  • One of my favorites. :)

  • bravo

  • Bellissima! *-*

  • Ivo Pogorelić was born in Belgrade!

  • Comment removed

  • me gusta su interpretacion muy limpia su ejecución y tecnica impecable he is wonderful pianist I like very very much his playing piano.Bogar petrolero.

  • viva Croazia!

  • viva Yugoslavia !

  • This is one of the great sonatas ever composed. Although it is relatively early in Haydn's carreer it shows a degree of maturity quite unexpected. We will not find parallels until the last piano trios.

Haydn piano music is limited in two aspects: he was not a virtuoso player and he perceived the limitations of the earliest piano-fortes. But comparing this music with Beethoven's, for example, is unfair and manifest some ignorance on the part of whom makes the comparison.

  • @C2209w Intelligent comment.

  • Beautifully played.

  • He's really good. I've seen him play live. He looks like he's from Haydn's day here. lol

    He's really cute.

  • I'm playing this for my piano summer recital. Difficult, but worth it.

  • His tempo changes are as usual quite shocking (01:45) but I can only say... that he is right; it makes perfect sense! Why? I don't know; but this is my favourite Haydn.

  • Have you head Hamelin ?

  • only croat can play like this ;)

  • dobro si rekao!

  • Ivo is half Serb also...

  • He was born in Yugoslavia and was taught to play by Yugoslav pianists who in turn were taught by Yugoslav institutions so yes, you're right, he does play like a true Yugoslav.

  • @Yugoslav80

actually, he was taught to play by russian pianist even though his first lessons he received in Belgrade.

he declares himself croatian, in every interview, even if his mother was serbian. and father croatian.

  • @gnomenreigen7 does it really matter, at the end of the day?

  • no doubt, haha

  • Great performance! Never thought Haydn's sonata can be this beautiful and interesting!

  • my gosh...this haydn is exemplary indeed:light, clear, not neglecting the drama-aspects,adequate sound and on a technical scale i must say that´s it,one cannit play better.he is even much more better than kissin.

    what a great enrichment..

  • If you all want to give him a masterclass with this piece, you´re 26 years late.. Just enjoy the music!!

  • Amazing playing. His light touch is dreamy...

  • everything about him is dream--y. simply ethereal. He is the most precious piece of art--remote, beauty, talent, workmanship, and fascinating personality.

  • Agreed. But, the idea that Haydn's imagination was limited to the sonority of one particular instrument is folly.

  • This is sonata no.31 Hob.XVI:46, not no.46.

I am playing this right now.

  • Actually, depending on which catalogue of Haydn's works one follows, the sonata could be one of three different numbers. Hoboken's catalogue was compiled between 1934 and 1971 and closely followed the Breitkopf & Hartel Pasler edition. That said, Pasler attributed to Haydn the work of other published composers, thus convoluting things obviously. Not all of Hoboken's inclusions are universally accepted as authentic, though this sonata does not fall into that category.

  • I'm playing this song right now and it is labeled "Sonata 27".

  • beautiful

  • Then go listen to Beyoncé, idiot!

  • AMEN!

Tell your friends that Haydn has survived these Two Hundred years and more because every generation discovers his worth anew. He earns his place with every new set of ears, and He will live when Beyonce is dead and gone and forgotten... which will be tomorrow...

  • Dies irae dies illa

    Patience donc !

  • I really would like to purchase his Haydn CD, but the price tag in the US is so ridiculously high.

  • I'm playing this sonata for an exam in a month. Haydn always came easy to me, but Pogorelich makes it look SO effortless. His interpretation is not very 'classic' though, I must agree. Too much rubato, and it IS a little rushed. Charming otherwise.

  • The kaleidoscopic array of keyboard color is somewhat anachronistic as well. But you have to agree that the results are astonishing.

  • Thx spokoinoi2000! IP is the greatest!

  • fast??????? this isnt fast at all

  • some parts are really fast, but overall not that fast

  • I am really fed up with People abusing Haydn like this. The speed is just ridiculous! What is the point? And too much pedal!!

  • Speed?? what r u a traffic agent? in this whole legendary performance u mind "speed"?

im so fed up with YouTube IGNORANCE

  • We have all different tastes and the World have lot of different interpretors

    I love Pogorelich MusicArt

  • there is so much beauty in this sonata that he goes by without noticing! It's too fast. And I agree that agree that it's boring (not enough characters/contrasts).

And why is always faster when it gets louder?

  • the micro-variations in rythm are typical in Pogorelich' interpretations. You can like them or not. With time passing by, those micro-variations became bigger and bigger. Today he can slow down the rythm up to 10 times in certain points;very extreme, but interesting.

  • One of the best Haydn interpretors around.

  • he is just the greatest

  • By the way, thatnicekid04, check out Pogorelich's recordings of Bach, to see what stable pulse is.

  • thatnicekid04, I can see that you never heard anything else performed by Pogorelich. I concluded that judging by your silly comment.

Check out his recording on DG ( Deutsche Grammophon ), you can see that clearly here he chose to play it like that.

    Amazing performance!

  • luv'em :)

  • Slight on the boring side too.

  • This guy has a very unstable pulse. Always rushing past down beats.

  • Admittedly a bit soft around the edges for Haydn, but I don't see what you mean by "rushing past down beats".

  • yep, perfect!

  • Just perfect.
