  • impressive

  • test it on some thing worth testing them on, my 3 year old child can do that on his big wheel

  • I had a dead stock 94 zj with the 5.2 and it would go just about anywhere it had any business being. Great vehicles.

  • dude, i can cross those ditches on my unicycle.

  • jeep rangler and jeep grand or like brothers the liberty and the compass and the patriot like the lil sister

  • my 2wd stock tahoe can do that....

  • @cheese22092 Maybe you've heard of Georgia clay; very slick. Anyway, as I relied in another comment, we had to be careful not to tear up the groud; private property! The hill is a bit steeper than it looks, as always in videos, and with the wet clay its doubtful any 2wd vehicle could have made it and definately not without a LOT of wheel spin.

  • Near bald tires. HAHAHA, Good Jeep, performed very well.

That is the reason why I want to buy one.

  • But grands are definately like a 4 wheel drive cadilac compared to all other jeeps lol they are very capable to and comfortable i like grands the most besg of both worlds

  • They never made an aluminum 35 for the record just aluminum 44s in zjs and alot of cherokees xjs have 29 spline 8.25 if there 97 or newer and 27 spline 8.25 if there older than a 97

  • ur only going across 1 1/2 creek bed pretty sure and suv can do that..

  • @MrSVTc0bra I don't disagree w/ you except to note that our goal was also to "tread lightly" since this was private land, an entry into a development. It was important not to tear up the ground and I doubt many 4x4's, w/ street tires like our Grand had, could do that. Sometimes it's not a matter of "can I do that" but "how well can I do that."

  • that grand needs more ground clearance even for a stock suv.

  • Yea it's a amazing you should see what ive done, it's a jeep not a Honda crv.

  • of course they were both handled easily, your in a jeep lol

  • ONLY IN A JEEP!

  • You all start taking your truck offroad for real and let'S talk after !!!! Jeep Rules.... Proud KJ owner !!! :-)

  • You would be surprised at what the grand cherokee is capable of, I know I was when I had my 96 Grand Cherokee with Quadra-Trac.

  • I've owned both, and I promise that there is no comparison btwn the two wen it comes to deep mud. The GC got stuck every time (with mud tires), but my JK hasn't gotten stuck yet (with factory tires). I love my JK, can't imagine driving anything else, besides a new 2012 jk :)

  • I have QD II in my Laredo!!

  • I just traded a 94 Dodge Caravan even for a '01 GC 4x4 that looks less then 3 yrs old, only because they wanted more room...idiots. 150k and runs lk new, no leaks, motor noise, or smoke. 4.0L. Must be good trucks. The only ugly thing is skinny225/75 street tires. WHY would u on 4x4!!? Can anyone tell me the bulkiest all-terrain i can get on the fact. 16" alum. whls w/out rub? Has optional fitment 245/70.Can I go bigger?

  • @musclecarluvr1 On my 1999 I lifted it 2" w/ one of the coil spring spacer lifts and put on 31s. No problems. Helped the looks and ground clearance a lot. It had had the 245/17's from the factory, standard w/ the tow package. The lift wasn't difficult to install as I recall; think I used the loan-a-tool for a spring compressor that made the job easier.

  • @roynash Hey man thnx for the reply. I'll look into that for some add. wheel clearance. Your 99 had 17" whls fact.? I wasnt aware that was an option..or did u mean 70 as in tire sz.? I've seen some that look good w/265-70's, it fills up wheelwell good, but i'd worry about rub on back shocks. Anyways, mine is the "Laredo" pkg, I knew nothing about GC, was bout to buy a Blazer, lol, and this deal happened, im still excited. This thing is 10x the truck comp. to Blazer. The van was a gift=0 in GC!

  • I really want a Grand with QD... QD II would be even better.

  • ARE you straight? Because im not even close

  • Where I live you have to do a lot more than a little ditch just to get to my house. Good video comparing the two, but I want to see a ZJ, XJ, and YJ comparison!

  • Great video man. I've had both myself. I like to see the match up. Both look good - obviously the Grand better for the highway too but can handle the ditches as well.

  • How bout you go do some actual off-roading and then see what ya think. Iv driven over harder obstacles on my way home, anything with 4wheel drive could do that.

  • how do you like the quadradrive in the cherokee i have heard both good and bad and i cant decide weather to get a 2000 grand cherokee because of it. how do you feel it compares to like toyotas 4 wheel drive in like the 4 runner. any help from anyone is helpfull

  • @painfull94

I haven't had a recent 4 runner so couldn't say. TOyota builds a great truck, who would argue w/ that? As for the Jeep Grands, we've owned 3 of them, two w/ quadradrive. The one in this video is a 2002,still going strong w/ over 150K. It's had only one costly issue involving a sensor that was hard to diagnose. No issues w/ engine, transmission, quadradrive or transfer case. I think the quadradrive is hard to beat for moderate off-road use. It's pretty rugged bu lots of lux!

  • @roynash so are grand cherokees good for just all around off rounding like what most trucks would do because most of my friends have trucks and i would be offroading and mudding with them. could a jeep hold its own?

    thanks

  • @Monash whats sensor issue did you have? Ive had one on my 04 JgC that took me almost 2 years to figure out.

  • @cal22583 On my 1999 the transmission speed sensor went out causing shift problems. Replaced the sensor: Problem gone.

  • @painfull94 Hi , Just chanced on your question and since i have owned both venicles you mentioned i think i can tell you that there's little between them as far as ability is concerned.I drove both vehicles on extended trips deep into the Sahara, the only issue that came up was the transmission overheating in the Toyota when it had to work hard in 4Low.No such issue with the Jeep, which rarely needed the Lo setting. Apart from that ,not even a flat tire.BTW the Jeep was more comfortable overall.

  • @manflintt hey thanks for answering my question. i have been a happy 94 zj owner here for about 1.5 months now and i love it. i decided to go with a zj because of the cost and i new i would trash it. i ran a friends 31's off his wrangler to try mine offroad and damn i love this thing. i went offroading with some friends one had a small ford and mine did better then anyones. and i only got stuck once and the tractor we used to pull me out got stuck 2 in the same place and it was 4wd. :) thanks.

  • Nice video! I have a 2000 WJ Laredo Diesel. I think that the WJ can follow the JK pretty good at the trail. But in the end, i think the JK will win. This because of the overhang on the WJ. Keep on mudding!

  • The Cherokee is in Quadradrive at all times which means torque is provided to any wheel which is not slipping. The 4 low adds in the low gearing and possibly eliminates the center clutch so that front and rear differentials turn are forced to turn at the same speed. I think my son used the low range to give better control but the Jeep would probably have done well without it. The Wrangler was in low range since the rear lock is only available in 4 Lo.

  • was the cherokee left in regular drive mode?....quadradrive or 4 lo?

  • As much as I like jeeps... this video is stupid why would you compare two jeeps

  • @mdog20170 Because we were curious,1) and 2) because older grands (when their value declines) make great trail rigs and often can be had for less money than Wranglers, so why not let folks know how they compare? Thanks for watching.

  • @roynash very cool reply you did.

  • @roynash Cherokees are better trail rigs and the parts cost half as much and they are much more reliabe, they have same aw4/a340 trans as a 300 hp mkII Toyota Supra for fuck sake..... Most don't have shitty aluminum dana 35's too, lol

  • @98MAzdaMilleniaS I'll excuse your language (which is typical of macho types) long enough to agree and disagree w/ you. We've had several Cherokees and I love 'um; they are pretty strong thru and thru, great trail rigs, lots of mods available and cheaper to maintain than the Grand, for sure. However, the only ones I know of that had the Dana 44 were the early "woody" trimmed ones, about 1985 or so, I think. They were the top of the line at that time. All of ours had Dana 35s.

  • @roynash All Jeep Cherokee's came standard with Chrysler 8.25(which is just as durable as Dana 44, nearly). Some early tow package XJ's had the Dana 44(pre-96), the Trac-Lok LSD equipped XJ's and ABS equipped XJ's got the Dana 35, but it wasn't alminum like in the Grand Cherokee.

  • Looks like the Grand Cherokee can pretty much do whatever the Wrangler JK can do, which makes me feel good since I own a JGC. Jeeps are great vehicles. I admire the Toyota FJ, Nissan X-terra, the British Leland Range Rover, but when it comes to 4x4s Jeep is the grand-daddy of them all and I'm proud that it's an American made vehicle that can stand up to the competition anywhere.

  • @JackKangaroo1 Your first sentence is absolutely silly.

  • @NemeanLion Considering that the Grand Cherokee and the JK are mechanically identical it's absolutely silly to doubt that they have the same capabilities off-road. The only real difference between them is the sheet metal covering the outside. DUH!!!

  • @JackKangaroo1 Enjoy your delusion.

  • @NemeanLion Same engines, same trannies, same suspension systems.......look up the specs sometime. And doesn't this video show them doing the same thing equally well? Your delusion must be that a different shape of sheet metal affects off-road capability.

  • @JackKangaroo1 I fart in your general direction.

  • @JackKangaroo1 This Grand had the V8... the JK has the minivan V6.... different engines, different transmissions, different transfer cases, different suspension. They are not mechanically identical man. Not even close. Judging by your comments I'd say you drive a mall crawler.

  • @94twiki Okay, there are some slight variations in the spec sheets but basically a Grand Cherokee can do anything a JK can do. I've got an old 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo that cuts through nine inches of snow like a hot knife through butter and has no trouble climbing up muddy dirt trails. A Jeep is still a Jeep and they're all good in my opinion.

  • @JackKangaroo1 hahah as I agree with you, a Jeep for the most part (older jeeps really) can do anything. But c'mon, my dad has a '98 ZJ and he wouldn't dare to travel some of the places I've been. He's got a 4.0, I got the 2.5. I'm rocking 31s stock and he's got 29 inch street tires. totally different vehicles built for different stuff. Wranglers are (were) built for off road purposes. Grand Cherokees were built for luxury, but with off roading still in their minds.

  • @94twiki Well maybe the new Grand Cherokees are luxury vehicles but my 1996 Laredo falls a bit short in that department. Kind of a bumpy ride and lots of hard plastic inside. But it's a good old work horse that gets me around. I know that you can tweek suspensions, change tire sizes, and a lot of other stuff for serious off-roading but for my needs of getting up some muddy hills in upstate New York my stock JGC is all I need. 175k on the odometer and stilling going strong.

  • @JackKangaroo1 let me take you for a ride in my wrangler and you'll see why i consider it "luxury"

  • @94twiki Just curious, do you have the 2-door classic Wrangler or the 4-door Unlimited variant? If I ever bought one I'd get the 4-door although I know for Jeep "purists" only the 2-door is considered the real thing.

  • @JackKangaroo1 Mine is a two door, that's all they made in 1993. The new Wranglers, well they just make me sad. So luxurious and so far away from where Wranglers originated from. Another thing is that they even had the nerve to create a 4 door, TWO WHEEL DRIVE Wrangler. I want to murder the man who came up with that idea. Please do not buy a Wrangler if you just want people to think you're "cool".

  • @94twiki I'm 62 years old, I don't do anything to look "cool" anymore. As for the Wrangler, I agree that the concept of a 2 wheel drive Jeep is totally pointless. A Jeep without 4 wheel drive is just a glorified grocery getter. I do like the Wrangler Unlimited 4-door version though. I know that with the longer wheelbase it can't go boulder busting as well as the shorter version but, let's face it, the 2-door Wrangler is tiny inside and some people just need more room.

  • @JackKangaroo1 Was reading over these replies and looks like I started a friendly debate here, so I'll chime in again. We've had both the 2 dr Wrangler and the newer 4 door. The short wheelbase is a help in some situations relative to ground clearance and maneuverability. But sometimes a climb is better made in the loger wheelbase, where the boulders or terrain happens to hit the axles of the shorter Jeeps just right to stop them. The longer wheelbase is also more stable, less tippy.

  • @roynash I'm glad we Americans still make the Jeep. It's an iconic vehicle. I was very pleased when the Wrangler Unlimited debuted a few years ago. The 2-door Wrangler always seemed too small to me but the Unlimited version offers a lot of room. My own Jeep is the more tame looking JGC --vintage 1996--and it gets me around quite nicely. Jeeps are great no matter what model you have. My only complaint would be the crappy gas mileage. Just tuned mine up and lucky to get 15 mpg.

  • @JackKangaroo1

I take it you have the V8? My 96 with the 4.0L I6 was getting around 22MPG on the highway, in town it was around 17mpg.

  • @wildbill23c No, I've got the inline 4.0 just like you. I've gotten up to 20.3 mpg cruising on an interstate but I live near New York City with lots of traffic jams, stop and go traffic, and I often remote start the car in cold weather and let it idle for 20 minutes, so my gas mileage sucks.

  • @wildbill23c I had a couple of I6 4x4 Grand Cherokee's covered around 75K miles in each averaged 18.5 mpg around town and usually got 25mpg on a long run - could go 400 miles before I needed to stop for fuel.

Got a 2007 V8 Hemi now and get around 15mpg in town and 22mpg on a long run......might take me a few minutes longer to reach my destination but I enjoy playing the 'economic drive' game.

  • @NemeanLion Not really, as the Grand Cherokee is a pretty capable vehicle in its own right. "The cow jumped over the moon".....now that's a silly sentence!

  • they are both shit. there's you conclusion.

  • Your answer is in both the written description below the word roynash, and on the screen as the video plays.

  • does the GC have quadra drive 1 or 2? please answer this. i want the 04 jus like that GC

  • 2 good 4x4's? throw a chevy in there! see what happens!

  • i dont see why you thought the Cherokee would have any problems. that was a pretty easy ditch.

  • Videos never look as rough as the real thing was. But here it's mostly the Georgia clay that posed the challenge. You're right, the ditch and the climb were modest. It's just that they were real slick from lots of recent rain.

  • I'd add that most 4x4's could get thru that spot but with open difs they'd be tearing up a lot of ground. Obviously, our jeeps "tread lightly".

  • @JKryanX -It looks easy, I agree. But because of that good 'ol Georgia clay, it was real slick. Earlier a guy replied to this video that he could make that climb w/ his 2wd pickup. I'd bet him a hundred dollars that he couldn't 'cuz of how slick it was. Also, the object here was to NOT tear up the ground. It was private property and we definitely wanted to tread lightly.

  • I am looking at buying a used Grand Cherokee right now. One of the good things I see in this video is that its overhangs are not bad. I would have expected it to have problems wit the bumpers hitting the ground, but I see that it isn't as big an issue as I had thought.

I am looking at 99-02 models. Is there much difference between the mileage of the six and the V8 engines?

  • the I6 is gonna get about 22mpg and the 4.7 v8 about 16-18

  • @scrogathon My l6 avg. is 13.3mpg

  • @crazyp2jimmy Damn dude my brothers 94 Cherokee with the 4.0 I6 gets at least 20mph.

  • So much for the ppl that say the Grand {cherokee} sucks offroad. Obvious the Wrangler can go more place then the Grand, but the Wrangler was designed that way and Grand is still better then most SUV its size.

  • Good vid. This does a great job of showing how capable the WJ and Quadradrive can be. To the idiots complaining, of course this isn't a rock crawler, but the first test would have 99% of stock 4wd vehicles digging holes and sliding sideways getting stuck. 2WD? Riiiiiiggggtttt.... If you haven't driven a Jeep with Quadra Drive then you just wouldn't understand anyway.

  • wow what a gay test you dont need lockers for that. stupid ass mall crawlers. go play on some real shit!

  • Dude those look like 100% stock machines..could a Explorer, Xterra, Blazer, Trailblazer or any 4WD do that same test in the video? Maybe and i'll even give it a probally for the sake of argument. And any stock 4x4 isn't made for rock crawling..lol..you could turn a Omni into a rock crawler if you were dumb enough and hand the money..i have seen it done! Stock VS Stock nothing will out wheel a ZJ or WJ in the woods as far as the "full/mid size" SUV market for the money

  • nice to c the wj with bald tires handle that like the wrangler.

  • The only issue with the WK is the front air strip is too low, mine is gone from my 08 already and fell off on the trail :-)

  • I'd say the IFS on the WK is a bigger issue than that...

  • And you do realize that the GC in this video is a WJ not WK right? WJ > WK

  • Comment removed

  • No my friend, WK is the designation for the 2005-2010 Grand Cherokee just like the one in the video you uploaded. JK is the designation for 2007 and up Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited.

  • That is a WJ my friend..i have the same model...all you have to do is look at the front end particually the headlights..that looks like a 2004 Limited with a V-8..99-04 had the same front end and the 2005+ has very different looking headlights..that is a WJ

  • I know the Jeep in the video is a WJ (I own an 03), see my earlier comments. The comment that jeep4jeep deleted was to me and said something to the effect of "derrr the WK is an Unlimited Wrangler" or something like that. I'm just clarifying Jeep letter designations for jeep4jeep. Trust me, I'd NEVER mix up a WJ and a WK, that's Jeep sacrilege in my eyes lol.

  • oh sorry bout that

  • @2000ViperGTS

lol thats why it was designed to unclip

  • ya, that's amazing for a cherokee, but nothin for a JK.

  • Lame video.

  • What a dumb fuckin video. Any car could handle this situation. Why don't you put these two jeeps to a real test!

  • That cherokee ain't got shit on that JK.

  • I could do that in two wheel drive

  • Well it usalyy helps for the grand cherokee to get the street tires off and at least at's on. I have a 2000 Wj limited with 31's and a 2inch lift and it does great

  • i dont htink the x comes with the lockers and sway bar, you install that stuff yourself?

  • I ordered my X from the factory w/ that equipment, available here in the States, but not in Europe, I'm told by another Jeep fan from overseas.

  • dude why dont you get a little further from the road and try some real wheeling

    fucking mallcrawler

  • a little aggressive over nothing arent you?

  • i hate pussy ass mall crawlers

    I HAVE 4WD AND I USE IT

  • You mean you have a crappy 71 chevy

  • ive had a 06 rubicon, and now i have my 04 grand like yours but red, limited, all that, and with the quadra drive...and i gotta say, it goes just about any where, as easily as my rubicon did with 2 lockers...i love how the limited slip works in my WJ...ive only got 2 inches of lift on my WJ, but i have a 93 wrangler YJ too, with 4 inches of lift and a winch and all that, but its open differential front and rear, and my grand can tackle some things that the wrangler cant...i love it

  • The JK has the options of the electric sway bar disconnect and front locker, both available as options on the regular x models. It does not have the 4.11 transfer case (just the standard 2.72) nor the front locker (both standard on the Rubicon). I opted this way to save bucks and also to get the 3.73 axle ratios rather than the less gas efficient 4.10 on the Rubicon. Thanks for watching.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for showing us! Here in my country, you either get the Sahara version with gas engine, no lockers, only traction control, manual or auto shift....or the Rubicon, with both lockers, elec. disconecting swaybar, the diesel engine coupled to auto shift. No manual for the Diesel Rubicon. No other options. I like the way you can beef up your rigs with the options. No need to buy stuff in a package you won't need.

  • Great video, yet I not sure about your JK.

JK w/ electric locker and sway-bar disconect, but it does not seem to be a Rubicon, wich would have front locker to.

Otherwise, I thought only the Rubicon has the swaybar wich can be disconected via push button. So is your's an Unlimited Sahara, or a Rubicon? Both are great cars anyway!
