@smacman68 yeh, you can autoland only when there really is no visibility,, and the crosswind should not be more than 8 knots.. so no matter what,, it is impossible to land there even if they were approved to autoland. P.S. all planes can autoland, but it is very expensive to keep the plane certified, as you need to do a check up on plane, pilot, and airport every 2 weeks... Definitely not worth it for some airlines.. CHEERS :)
today its longer, but I landed there 20 years ago when the runway was shorter. only exactly what they needed to land and brake. and they braked hard. Still pretty short runway though

I was a passenger returning to Orlando in a horrible thunderstorm. I was getting a bad feeling. The pilot tried to land, then aborted and had to circle for an hour because the storm was stalled right over the airport. I was never so happy to arrive late! Great job, Mr. Pilot!
@paragon1001 Happenned at Frankfurt-Hahn once when i was there, there was over 8 ryanair flights flying around the airport for over 4 hours because the storm would not go away XD, pretty cool to see them land though
Pilot 1: Ok... Prepare For Landing...... Pilot 2: Ok... Pilot 1: wow, a windy day here. Pilot 2:yeah... Pilot 1:hey , a camera! Pilot 2: where? Pilot 1:There. HEY U !! LOOK AT US!! WERE DRIFTING! XD Pilot 2: wtf r u doin? Pilot 1: Im just showing off.. Pilot 2: now we will gonna go around.... Pilot 1:ok... (Later...) Pilot 1: Were Drifting Again!! Weeee! Pilot 2: WTF!!!
Im from Madeira @woodster1965 yes we have heard tht but its not a single bit true. I would rather go around than crash. Besides im going back to Madeira tomorrow :) cant wait to see the family :)
When we came in to Madeira once the pilot came very steeply in and put down heavily and suddenly on the runway and slammed into reverse thrust str8 away...we heard later that they have COMPETITIONS between themselves to prove their manhood and see who can land and come to a halt within the length of the original runway!!! which btw has been extended twice from its original length. Dunno how true all this is but it's wat we heard.
Sure is an interesting experience landing/leaving there!!...strong winds, steep descent, short runway. The whole package.Recently was featured no.9 in tv prog of 'Worlds Top 10 Most Extreme Airports'
This sort of thing will never put me off Madeira tho.Fell in love with the place 4 yrs ago and planning my 7th visit there already.Amazing island.
Sailed to Madiera once, what a beautiful island, loved it. When we left for the Canaries, we went past the airport and I was glad I was in a 30 ft sailboat and not relying on an airplane.
@rfranquinho that runway is classed as an extreme runway, cause at any time the wind can pick up without warning cause of where it is situated, by the way madeira is excellent was there about 3 months ago, your island is stunning.
Oh yeah, this airport makes fun. Always, when i travel to madeira i say to my friend "Calculate more time, because i am sure, we make some go arounds" I never had a landing directly. Most of time 2-3 go arounds.
I spoke with a American Pilot on an internal US flight once, I asked "Which was the most difficult Airport in the world to land in" he said "Funchal - Madeira" so it obviously has a repatriation.
But over the years they've made the runway bigger, but I'm unsure if that has helped or not?
and you don't know anything about this airport. ILS isn't possible and not allowed. They fly VFR and only pilots with a special rating and many flight hours are allowed to land there
@DAL199Pilot lool sre u serious ? this must be a joke im from madeira and i live in london i go back 3 times a yr and yeh ive flown with different companys no one beats tap and how they land there jets in madeira easyjet was the worst they did a go around
@cewinvega i fly 7 times per year because of my job when i was a kid i was flyng with TAP all the time and i have 2 words for TAP - BULL SHIT! when easyjet started doing madeira flights i changed "company" and started flyng with easyjet and anyways TAP - RARELY go around (risking lifes in bad weather) EASYJET - Cares about their passangers and preferes to go around GO AROUNDS ARE FOR SECURITY AND NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE BAD -.- BAGS LOST WITH TAP 5 WITH EASYJET 0
@FioX094 well when u already gone thru the decenting process .. poping ears and little turbulance what a plane goes thru with most decends ure ready to land not go around gain its not like the weather changes that much when u go and come back around its just more time the passengers spend being scared
If you plan on flying to madeira the best thing to do is go by TAP because even if you get diverted 90% of the time it will be to Porto Santo and not another island.
@cinis1234 that never had anything to do with the actual runway length, it did contribute but this was because of the main reason that being the wind. Madeira Airport is very susceptible to heavy cross winds.
@tubelamar One time I were about to land in Bergen (Norway) But the pilots had to abort landing and go around about 5 times because of windy weather and other airplanes, it was a bit scary but the pilots always inform you if the weather is to bad to land. But pilots are trained to all kind of weather and situations, so there is actually no reason to be afraid, thats something i always think about =)
I've been to Madeira three times, but I will never forget the flight from Porto Santo to Madeira on a extremely stormy day when the ferry from Madeira to Porto Santo was 3 hours delayed (as the taxi driver told us) and I wondered if our flight could happen ... as you can read this here you know I survived, but you can be sure it was no fun at all ...
My comment to this video: Congratulations to the pilot for an excellent job!
Wow, I was transferred to GB airways one busy summer and I landed here once a week. The descent was so steep it never failed to make my ears pop. It was only when we took off again I was astonished to see the runway was being held up on stilts/pillars, an amazing sight!
Another problem in north america, understand the meaning,, a polak fucking around with the mafia bosses in north america,, for they fucked with him, (Bankers)
these pilots are not very good, i respect the strict regulations but still, I have a friend who lands at this airport in these conditions no problem while others abort, but...
@plasmavor1 To be fair there could have been a sudden crosswind that took the pilot off guard, like that lufthansa pilot that was on the news when he made that near miss go-around.
super scary. i made this landing in december. we circled for at least 20 mins. feels like the wind is going push you into the big ass wall of rock on the right.
True about go-arounds. I've sat in the right hand seat with pilots that just wouldn't accept defeat - its no fun.... Better to give it another try! We nearly ran off the end on one occcasion - and burned out the brakes in the process!!
Bear in mind that all aircraft have a crosswind limit.. It's pretty high on a 737, but can still be exceeded on a really bad day. To land beyond that limit would be unsafe and foolish - and the boss doesn't like it when you scrub/burst all of the tires..! P.S. if you're wondering what happens when you exceed the limit; its fairly simple - you have full rudder and a whole handful of cross aileron and the aeroplane still won't stay on the centreline - its not fun ;-(
This also happened one week ago when the captain of an Easyjet flight I was on chickened out on his 3rd attempt to land our plane at Funchal, and then went on to fly us to Porto Santo and land there instead :( The pilot was a disgrace.. what a chicken
hah its not that bad, it happend to my on flight to Lodz , after few minutes of danicing in the air, the right side of plane hit the ground and suddenly throttle up and we were up again , thanks god that pilot had gsoh and after that said to us passangers - ayayay i missed the runway ... :D
I normally go to Madeira every year, 30 years ago the runaway was half the size it is nowadays...back then was scary, almost like landing on a carrier boat!
well usually it comes experienced pilots when it comes to landing in madeira as for first timers in landing here can be a little tough but not impossible xD
It isn't dangerous because they have strict regulations at the airport. My flight was diverted to Tenerife because of the wind. I'd rather be diverted than crash into the sea.
@Tim118Jones my flight was cancelled because of the wind, Thomson and easy jet would not land and were all diverted to tenerife, we were told it was because of the stric regulation.
How ever all TAP flights kept on landing every 10-15 minutes another TAP flight landed.
It is difficult, and it's down to skill and experience in the area.
There is stric regulation in place. however pilots can disrregard it when a window arrises for the landing, which to me it was every time a TAP flight came in.
@mywifes2sexy this is a lot TAP pilots are all ex Portuguese air force pilots and there training is a lot greater then that of most other airlines. Also like you mentioned they do a lot more flights to the region and know it better as a result.
Yeah, but not absolutely correct, because at this airport is the controler in the tower the big boss and he gives a clear to land when its safe enough only. Sometimes the pilots are able to land in some situation, but the controler says "make a go around" and they must do it.
@superman797 Within Flight sim 2004/X- If you cant make the landing with winds like that no matter how many runways the aiport has, Go around until you can safely land that plane. I was doing an approach into Tamba Intl., Florida last night and i had to go around for 2 reasons: 1. Strong easterly wind. 2. Plane just exiting the runway onto a taxi way.
@THEMATTBUXTON I already have one unlike you. I laugh at people that spaz like you. Its sad too. In my 2 years of being on youtube, your comment towards me is one of the most pathetic ive seen so far. I got one thing to say: TROL.
@THEMATTBUXTON is that the best you can come up with? Ha ha ha. That makes me laugh. No i do have i life. Im working at a auto mechanic store. And u sound like a racist australian. How sad.
Jesus, I would have a heart attack. In Orlando, during takeoff, they make the pilots turn sharp left right after takeoff when they're in jumbo jets (city code), and when I took off from there we stalled and almost crashed. That shit is really scary.
how is he a noob landing like that can be dangerous the pilot has to consider the safety of the passengers and the aircraft. Also the Air traffic controllers can tell the pilot to abort the landing
Its not a joke, every year I go to see my grand parents it keeps getting scarier and the pilots keep getting ballsier. Madeira, is notorious for giving pilots a hell of a time
OMG !!!!!!im sorry but i would be fucking shitin on that flight id be goin home to change my jocks about twenty times my heart would be in my mouth !!!!!!!
Oh yeah...I remember that airport. Our Pilot had to try twice till we finally landed. Beautiful Island though totally worth the flight and near death experience. :)

from 77/86, about 8/year from 64/77.

Now its comfortable, with enough room to aproach and depart very safely. With bad weather

I normally go to Madeira every year, 30 years ago the runaway was half the size it is nowadays...back then was scary, almost like landing on a carrier boat!
jpccg 1 year ago
well usually it comes experienced pilots when it comes to landing in madeira as for first timers in landing here can be a little tough but not impossible xD
xxkajimaruxx 1 year ago
one week ago we landed in madeira and fortunately we could land at the first try. But we had many problems in the air and so i was a so scared.
Landind in Madeira is really difficult,i think
philwohl 1 year ago 2
Abort the landing, missed approach, is a pilot's decision. When he's not happy with the approach he goes around.
alkatifa04 1 year ago
yesterday we landed, and we almost crashed the plane jumped 3 times or something
sorry for bad english
KimoTheOne 1 year ago
Most important thing here is to remember that a cross-wind is attempted based on a number of decisions, primarily;
1.) The Pilot's skill level on Xw.
2.) The aircrafts Max Demonstrated Xw
3.) The Airlines Max Xw Limit

It isn't dangerous because they have strict regulations at the airport. My flight was diverted to Tenerife because of the wind. I'd rather be diverted than crash into the sea.
Tim118Jones 2 years ago 60
@Tim118Jones my flight was cancelled because of the wind, Thomson and easy jet would not land and were all diverted to tenerife, we were told it was because of the stric regulation.
How ever all TAP flights kept on landing every 10-15 minutes another TAP flight landed.
It is difficult, and it's down to skill and experience in the area.
There is stric regulation in place. however pilots can disrregard it when a window arrises for the landing, which to me it was every time a TAP flight came in.
mywifes2sexy 1 year ago
@mywifes2sexy this is a lot TAP pilots are all ex Portuguese air force pilots and there training is a lot greater then that of most other airlines. Also like you mentioned they do a lot more flights to the region and know it better as a result.
marco0798 1 year ago
Rating is for the pilot. Only the best pilots go around when things don't look right
superman797 2 years ago 105
@superman797
Yeah, but not absolutely correct, because at this airport is the controler in the tower the big boss and he gives a clear to land when its safe enough only. Sometimes the pilots are able to land in some situation, but the controler says "make a go around" and they must do it.
Hoshibandit 1 year ago
@superman797
You are right. It is no shame to live to make another approach.
sablatnic 1 year ago 3
@superman797 Within Flight sim 2004/X- If you cant make the landing with winds like that no matter how many runways the aiport has, Go around until you can safely land that plane. I was doing an approach into Tamba Intl., Florida last night and i had to go around for 2 reasons: 1. Strong easterly wind. 2. Plane just exiting the runway onto a taxi way.

lol try landing in wellington New Zealand with southerly winds. rock and roll baby
TurtleCuisine 2 years ago
Jesus, I would have a heart attack. In Orlando, during takeoff, they make the pilots turn sharp left right after takeoff when they're in jumbo jets (city code), and when I took off from there we stalled and almost crashed. That shit is really scary.

how is he a noob landing like that can be dangerous the pilot has to consider the safety of the passengers and the aircraft. Also the Air traffic controllers can tell the pilot to abort the landing

yes it is !
It's runway 23 and nice goaround in microburst on heading 139 immediatly after pushing the TOGA butons...
airposte 2 years ago
yes it is, the plane is approaching from above machico because it would have been too dangerous to fly around to the usual end of the runway
ccfcrule223 2 years ago
Its not a joke, every year I go to see my grand parents it keeps getting scarier and the pilots keep getting ballsier. Madeira, is notorious for giving pilots a hell of a time
jangotrooper 2 years ago
i live here... when it's like that usually the plane lands on the nearby island and people are then either flown back later or taken by ferry.

lagostavoadora 2 years ago
