  • watched this video about 2 weeks ago, went to practice, have great success with it. posted a video response of me using it today at the Tournament of Champions 9. Thanks! Go SMAA and AFC :-)

  • 116 likes... 2 dislikes... Ahahhaa 2 people got choked out by the Gator :)

  • its a strangle not a choke. but i guess that doesnt really matter

  • Woo! Just landed this one today, but from both standing. It's a nice choke, especially when your opponent underestimates you.

  • Also make sure he passes on the same side where you have the four fingers inside the collar.. Or else it won't work.

  • @sepetchai when you roll to your side and let them pass, you have to fight and try to get on your knees. Gotta do it as soon as they pass and you start turning. I use it all the time ;) good luck

  • I'm tired of people claiming they practice jiu-jitsu and then come no youtube to look for advice....

  • hey jeff. first of all I would like to thank you for this video and technique. really helped my game especially when they guy has passed my guard ;)

but I have this one problem. i have both hands secured for the choke, he passes my guard to side, then i turn on to my stomach exposing my back (already choking him) but when he takes my back and gets both hooks in, i cant finish the choke. when he has both legs in he tries flatening me out and posturing his head up so i cant get it. please advise.

  • Great technique applied to actual matches and great sportsmanship too.

  • Best cure for insomnia on the net.

  • at the end : "dads muoy baybee" :D

  • Just watched this so I can do it to my friends in a uncontrolled Enviornment for generic fun. THANKS YOUTUBE!

  • gotta give you credit for the class man.

we need more of this. keep up the good work.

  • hahaha happy gator choking. love it.

  • sick choke!

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like this choke commonly results in puting your opponent to sleep because you dont feel like you're being "choked". The throatt is perfectly open yet the blood is cut off so you dont have that traditional feeling of being choked. Nice video!

  • @RCHeliPilot its not a choke its a strangle and al strangles are as you desribe. He'll only go to sleep if he doesnt tap,he still knows hes being strangled if he ever trained before

  • sweet choke bro... will try tomorrow fo sure! Mahalo!

  • cute but that will never work against someone who knows what he's doing. trying to pull off that choke, especially in the open guard, leaves you volnurable for an arm bar. dont get me wrong, ive used the gator/bat choke plenty of times but it will only work on the same person once. thats what so cool about bjj. every move has a counter. you should upload the arm bar counter

  • @moschetty if it was in open guard ,you cant be armbarred. It was the fact that at 1 point he was choking from under mount that was the problem, but not in this case as the choke was already on and the armbar was the last thing on his mind.

  • @billysue2 i had a guy try that on me but the arm that holds the collar palm up got ripped up. it only works if the guy doesnt know the choke, otherwise that arm is snapped.

  • @moschetty

    You snapped a guy's arm?

  • @jameshanley40 no. Im just saying that a person could get caught in an armbar if they attemp that choke. just a simple knee to belly and armbar

  • Hey Jeff, I passed my Orange belt Jiu Jitsu exam yesterday, I was wondering how long it took you to get to blue.

    Cheers.

  • nice tutorial slept a guy at practice after i watched it. thanks

  • nice job. i like that you show your use of it in competition, then explain it. this is also one of my favorite moves, you can hit it from many positions.

  • i think ima put my kid to sleep like that :P

  • can you do this from a dominent position eg mount ???????????

  • @liamshawmma

Yeah, but then it's just the baseball bat choke. Same grip. Rotate to north-south.

  • yea liam, its better from knee on stomach tho its a baseball bat choke than u switch to north south

  • excellent choke! its either lightsd out. or roll and give up mount

  • sneaky move! i love it!

  • I was just wondering if it's possible to do this from the closed guard, and open it up when the grip is set, order for him to pass?

  • he has to pass but dont let him take full mount, just keep his momentum and move him back then choke

  • @darkbuster1 yea, ive actually done that in judo

  • thanks for this, really good choke, used it last night at judo hehe :p

  • Excelent. You made my day with this technique.

    Thanks very much

  • how long are they asleep?

  • does any1 knows the real name of this choke? or is it simply "gator" choke???

  • baseball bat choke

  • awesome

  • a fellow white belt almost got me with that but i rolled with it and gave mount to live lol

  • This is good stuff, I worked it a bit the other night, caught a few people with it. Most guys are so focused on passing they don't even notice they're getting choked. I'll keep working on this. Thanks for the post Bro!

  • THANKS FOR THE VID POST!!!!!

i used this last night during our free role and was catching blue belts left and right, fucking great.

I got a tourney on this sat and i hope to use this technique.

  • Does it matter which hand is turned which way as long as you have alternate grips in? i.e. - do you need to switch those grips if the guy is passing to your other side or is that irrelevant?

  • dude, that choke is the shit. i saw this video a couple of weeks ago and my teacher polished it up for me. by FAR my favorite choke. im only a blue belt and ive choked out black belts with that choke. they never see it coming, from my guard, side mount, or standing. thanks for posting it.

  • "if he doesn't tap he falls asleep" grins... lolz

  • omg I would never do this in a competition unless im 100% sure I got the choke. if u dont get the choke u are basically letting your opponent win when u let him pass your guard. great technique though!!

  • lol @"I would never do this in a competition" - you shouldnt go to a competition if you cant pull this off it is a fairly easy technique.

  • Ummm thats why he rolls to turtle guard so he doesnt get passed. And the guy actually chokes himself by passing. You WANT him to pass.

  • Great technique!

  • aren't u supposed to lift the feet, and not the head. 2nd ko - ref's a duffus

  • I like your Video!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this choke. Whenever I use butterfly guard I always go for the loop choke/baseball bat choke combo, and you'll almost always get one of them

BTW, at about 2:22 it looks like the guy says "what happened?" and Jeff replies "baseball bat choke man"

  • This seems to put alot of people to sleep! Ive seen some other vids too. If anyone want to see the No Gi version do search on Luke Summerfield. He does a baseball bat choke No Gi in the cage match against a guy name justin I belive. its pretty sweet. I pulled it off the other day. Kind of hard to do no gi tho.

  • omg. the guy just chokes out. simple yet effective technique.

    impressive.

can you show how to do it in a no gi fight? thanks!

  • If there is no Gi then you'd have to hook your hands, I think.

  • The defense to this is just put your forearm into his face to create space and escape it. Nice tutorial though.

  • 50/50 at best. It's a bait move, meaning if the guy has never seen it or felt the pressure he is done. You give up so much more against a more experienced opponent, who for instance, will "uncoil the bat" as we call it thus relieving pressure from the choke. This kid seems pretty good at feinting the whole thing. Looks good in his game.

  • I agree, its a gi that makes this so effective.

10th's is a very very nice move indeed..

    They have beautiful BJJ..

Im sure ive seen randy couture use a gator chcoke in the ufc though..

I may be wrong but im sure he did a variation and from a north south position..

Gracie barra here..rogers academy .lagarto is my coach..

    respect to you all..

  • yeah. here is a 10th planet gator roll:

    watch?v=aqwmuGmGbjE

The guy who performs it is Ari Bolden from 10th planet Victoria. the Channel is submissions101. be sure to subscribe to it, he explains very well. Ari is a really nice guy too, talked to him via emails a couple of times.

the real 10th planet gator roll, you keep on rolling further, and you walk around the guy. REALLY effective. I'm a noob in bjj, only about 8 classes or so, and could pull it off the other day. against another newbie.

  • Yeah i a huge fan of 10th and ari..

I think his videos a some of the very best instructional in BJJ..

Cheers for the kink my friend..

  • yeah since I'm only 8 classes old in BJJ, Ari actually made me learn more than my teacher! lol. His videos are awsome. The seminar we received from Eddie Bravo on february 15 was awesome too! (I bet you will be jealous about that one ;) haha)

Eddie is such a nice guy!

  • Jealous.....errrr well yes.. :)

Eddie has taken it the next level, and improved it vastly, i study his and ari's techniques very close..

Im actually closing in on my 3rd year, but its been a little scattered with lagarto's commitments to competition and his commitments to roger..

To go to rogers class, i would have to travel from manchester to london, and its just not viable.

The times i have been taught by roger , he's brutal ,but hes a great guy.

Check out some of rogers and lagartos vids.

  • cool I'll check this out.

But isn't eddie going to do a seminar in manchester pretty soon? If I remember correctly, yes! anyway, check it out! his seminars are really nice.

  • If he is coming to manchester, ill sure to be there..

    thanks...

ill have a look on his site, see whats going down...

  • mhhh this is good, howeverthis is only usable with gi on. Personally I do 10th planet and find it is so much more realistic. But got to admit its really good, I went to a standard BJJ school once and got caught by that. 3 times in a row. lol.

but 10th planet's gator roll looks really nice. you really roll like a gator, its impresive. Nobody did it to me, snce we did not see it in class yet (I'm still beginner), but I've seen people do it, and it looks really impressive. One of my favorite moves

  • Agreed my friend..

10th's really nice, its a very effective move.

Gracie barra uk..right here legarto and roger..

  • Great choke taught it to my class last week. If you are in town please feel free to stop by and roll anytime. It would be an hourner to have you...team Cleber luciano

  • nice bro

  • Hey Jeff i got a question and please reply..Whats choking the guy in this choke? is it your arms? or is it his shirt underneath his clothing? if it iz the shirt, duz it mean u can only do the choke if they hav a shirt underneath? thanx jeff

  • And the ref is supposed to know to lift the legs up and not torso to allow blood to flow to the brain.

  • I like how this video shows the technique used in actual matches before the instructional breaks it down. Too often the instructional starts off with boring talking.

  • this choke is super effective. but you must watch out for the armbar counter, so you need to keep your arms close to you as well.

  • your great skill is only exceded by your good sportmanship!!!

  • Love it!Thanks alot, i already use the baseball bat choke a great deal and this will help me use it even more =)

  • GOD DAMN!!!

  • WTF! thatz tight!! wow, i reali need to go find a class around hurrr to attend..thatz an awesome art..nice one man..u should do mma

  • help! I tried to use this move on a guy yesterday. At the point where you say "this is already choking him" I wasn't able to get it. I was able to continue to pull through and try for a normal baseball bat choke. Any tips for what I could be doing wrong? Is there a way to post a video where you have a better angle at what's happening underneath? Otherwise, post more vids! The few technique vids you've had are great.

  • sorry for the late reply i've been really busy... anyway, try doing an uppercut motion on the arm that has palm up position.. imagine driving your elbow towards the ceiling. that should do the trick.

  • I've tried to do that a bunch of times. I do find it makes it harder for people to pass me in certain positions, but what people end up doing is putting their knee against my body to prevent me from pulling down and wait for me to tire out. Any suggestions?

  • well done!! 5*s!!

  • i was sparing with my friend and i was standing up and had the choke and i fell down on purpose and started to roll him. this is extremely effective

  • Awesome tech dude. Thanks

  • gr8 technique! 5*

  • how do you do this if the guy has no shirt on like can you use this technique in the UFC

  • that's a different game but that gi choke is siiiick sonnn. Thanks for posting Jeff.

  • You can use a modified gable grip by clasping your hands behind the neck, place your right thumb between your index and middle fingers on the left hand. This allows for the turning motion needed to scissor the elbows. This is way lower percentage no-gi, however....where I'm from this is a baseball choke, not a gator choke.

People pass out ALL THE TIME from this choke, because you keep thinking, if I can just survive this pressure and get free, I'll have his back....but you never will.

  • I'm an A/V learner. Care to post a vid of what you're talking about?

  • No...not really....

  • wen u put some1 out wit that move how long does it take them to wake up

  • it depends.. but if you do try to lift their legs up so the blood goes back to their brain... what the choke does is it cuts the blood going to the brain (which carries the oxygen).. it normally takes them about 30-40 seconds to get conciousness...

  • would it work if the guy is only wearing a t-shirt?

  • I have not tried it yet. But if I had to use it for self defense I would probably get as much shirt as I can. I'd get most of the person's shirt from his back, that way the shirt would not rip.

  • You can use a gable/monkey grip. It's becomes more of a neck crank/ throat crush though. Another nice video. Very good.

  • Love this move....I'm making it mine Homie! Great tutorial, you just opened up a window for me...thanx!

  • go for it bro! have fun!

  • thats some red army shit right there!

  • i'm not sure i understand

  • Great tutorial. Your also a great sportsman. BJJ needs more you's!

  • thanks!

  • Baseball choke from the guard. Very nice to see someone use it when someone is passing your guard. Also see Keith Owen's videos here on U Tube for more ways to use it.

  • lol wat if tehre shirt riped.....it happend.when i showed my friends lol.

  • yeah that's what i was thinking. it seems like this choke would only be reliable if your opponent is wearing a gi.

  • thats a pretty sick choke

  • I loved this choke, I"m going to give it a try.

     Thank you.

  • Good lookin' out!! Very good stuff, I can't wait to practice it after BJJ class.

  • Nice technique.

  • thats awesome!

  • You are absolutely filthy with that thing, people just falling asleep left and right.

  • nice vid and very good technique..

  • sweet move jeff. cheers from the philippines.

  • This is great! i dont care much about the technical mumble jumble of naming techniques, you can call it the cockroach choke or the cherry pie submission, long as it is simple to learn and effective! and this vid is both... thx man for puttin this online!!

  • lol Cherry Pie submission, thats funny!

  • Fantastic. That will definately be added to the armoury. I had seen your match vids previously and was hoping that you'd put up a tutorial! Fair play and keep them coming!

  • This is great

  • ive seen the baseball choke done from a kneeride with no gi, can u pull it off from the guard without gi?

  • working on it. i don't really do nogi much. but i constantly think of ways to get chokes from different positions.

btw, i'll do a baseball bat choke tutorial next week or so.

    thanks for posting guys!

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Sorry brosef. That is a baseball bat choke. Gator roll is the same as an anaconda choke.

    Still good though.

  • Good Shit.
