watched this video about 2 weeks ago, went to practice, have great success with it. posted a video response of me using it today at the Tournament of Champions 9. Thanks! Go SMAA and AFC :-)
@sepetchai when you roll to your side and let them pass, you have to fight and try to get on your knees. Gotta do it as soon as they pass and you start turning. I use it all the time ;) good luck
hey jeff. first of all I would like to thank you for this video and technique. really helped my game especially when they guy has passed my guard ;)
but I have this one problem. i have both hands secured for the choke, he passes my guard to side, then i turn on to my stomach exposing my back (already choking him) but when he takes my back and gets both hooks in, i cant finish the choke. when he has both legs in he tries flatening me out and posturing his head up so i cant get it. please advise.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like this choke commonly results in puting your opponent to sleep because you dont feel like you're being "choked". The throatt is perfectly open yet the blood is cut off so you dont have that traditional feeling of being choked. Nice video!
@RCHeliPilot its not a choke its a strangle and al strangles are as you desribe. He'll only go to sleep if he doesnt tap,he still knows hes being strangled if he ever trained before
cute but that will never work against someone who knows what he's doing. trying to pull off that choke, especially in the open guard, leaves you volnurable for an arm bar. dont get me wrong, ive used the gator/bat choke plenty of times but it will only work on the same person once. thats what so cool about bjj. every move has a counter. you should upload the arm bar counter
@moschetty if it was in open guard ,you cant be armbarred. It was the fact that at 1 point he was choking from under mount that was the problem, but not in this case as the choke was already on and the armbar was the last thing on his mind.
@billysue2 i had a guy try that on me but the arm that holds the collar palm up got ripped up. it only works if the guy doesnt know the choke, otherwise that arm is snapped.
nice job. i like that you show your use of it in competition, then explain it. this is also one of my favorite moves, you can hit it from many positions.
This is good stuff, I worked it a bit the other night, caught a few people with it. Most guys are so focused on passing they don't even notice they're getting choked. I'll keep working on this. Thanks for the post Bro!
Does it matter which hand is turned which way as long as you have alternate grips in? i.e. - do you need to switch those grips if the guy is passing to your other side or is that irrelevant?
dude, that choke is the shit. i saw this video a couple of weeks ago and my teacher polished it up for me. by FAR my favorite choke. im only a blue belt and ive choked out black belts with that choke. they never see it coming, from my guard, side mount, or standing. thanks for posting it.
omg I would never do this in a competition unless im 100% sure I got the choke. if u dont get the choke u are basically letting your opponent win when u let him pass your guard. great technique though!!
This seems to put alot of people to sleep! Ive seen some other vids too. If anyone want to see the No Gi version do search on Luke Summerfield. He does a baseball bat choke No Gi in the cage match against a guy name justin I belive. its pretty sweet. I pulled it off the other day. Kind of hard to do no gi tho.
50/50 at best. It's a bait move, meaning if the guy has never seen it or felt the pressure he is done. You give up so much more against a more experienced opponent, who for instance, will "uncoil the bat" as we call it thus relieving pressure from the choke. This kid seems pretty good at feinting the whole thing. Looks good in his game.
The guy who performs it is Ari Bolden from 10th planet Victoria. the Channel is submissions101. be sure to subscribe to it, he explains very well. Ari is a really nice guy too, talked to him via emails a couple of times.
the real 10th planet gator roll, you keep on rolling further, and you walk around the guy. REALLY effective. I'm a noob in bjj, only about 8 classes or so, and could pull it off the other day. against another newbie.
yeah since I'm only 8 classes old in BJJ, Ari actually made me learn more than my teacher! lol. His videos are awsome. The seminar we received from Eddie Bravo on february 15 was awesome too! (I bet you will be jealous about that one ;) haha)
mhhh this is good, howeverthis is only usable with gi on. Personally I do 10th planet and find it is so much more realistic. But got to admit its really good, I went to a standard BJJ school once and got caught by that. 3 times in a row. lol.
but 10th planet's gator roll looks really nice. you really roll like a gator, its impresive. Nobody did it to me, snce we did not see it in class yet (I'm still beginner), but I've seen people do it, and it looks really impressive. One of my favorite moves
Great choke taught it to my class last week. If you are in town please feel free to stop by and roll anytime. It would be an hourner to have you...team Cleber luciano
Hey Jeff i got a question and please reply..Whats choking the guy in this choke? is it your arms? or is it his shirt underneath his clothing? if it iz the shirt, duz it mean u can only do the choke if they hav a shirt underneath? thanx jeff
I like how this video shows the technique used in actual matches before the instructional breaks it down. Too often the instructional starts off with boring talking.
help! I tried to use this move on a guy yesterday. At the point where you say "this is already choking him" I wasn't able to get it. I was able to continue to pull through and try for a normal baseball bat choke. Any tips for what I could be doing wrong? Is there a way to post a video where you have a better angle at what's happening underneath? Otherwise, post more vids! The few technique vids you've had are great.
sorry for the late reply i've been really busy... anyway, try doing an uppercut motion on the arm that has palm up position.. imagine driving your elbow towards the ceiling. that should do the trick.
I've tried to do that a bunch of times. I do find it makes it harder for people to pass me in certain positions, but what people end up doing is putting their knee against my body to prevent me from pulling down and wait for me to tire out. Any suggestions?
You can use a modified gable grip by clasping your hands behind the neck, place your right thumb between your index and middle fingers on the left hand. This allows for the turning motion needed to scissor the elbows. This is way lower percentage no-gi, however....where I'm from this is a baseball choke, not a gator choke.
People pass out ALL THE TIME from this choke, because you keep thinking, if I can just survive this pressure and get free, I'll have his back....but you never will.
it depends.. but if you do try to lift their legs up so the blood goes back to their brain... what the choke does is it cuts the blood going to the brain (which carries the oxygen).. it normally takes them about 30-40 seconds to get conciousness...
I have not tried it yet. But if I had to use it for self defense I would probably get as much shirt as I can. I'd get most of the person's shirt from his back, that way the shirt would not rip.
Baseball choke from the guard. Very nice to see someone use it when someone is passing your guard. Also see Keith Owen's videos here on U Tube for more ways to use it.
This is great! i dont care much about the technical mumble jumble of naming techniques, you can call it the cockroach choke or the cherry pie submission, long as it is simple to learn and effective! and this vid is both... thx man for puttin this online!!
