Question, folks. Can we categorize this song as a 70's or 80's song? Recorded in July 1978, it came out in 1979 and was number one for the entire year but had significant airplay in the early 80's. It also has that early 80's sound to it. I know that late 70's nd elry 80's shared the smae sound here and there but how would you deem this, 70s or 80s?
I remember this from when I was little. The music is dippy but I love it. I used to giggle about it when I was a kid and hum along with the music until my dad told me to stop...I told him, "but they're doing it in the song" and he said they had a right to do it (be dippy) because they were getting paid LOL, TOO FUNNY!
Cons: this song inspired Robbie Dupree's "Steal Away" and countless other songs by other artists who modeled the main keyboard riff after this particular tune.
Great song even though this was when the Doobie Brothers were in their Sappy Pop faze. Kool & the Gang did the same thing around the same time. Still got to admit what a great song.
According to Wikipedia (not always the best info source, I know) Michael Jackson claimed he sang at least one of the high harmony vocals, but was not credited with doing so. McDonald co-wrote the song with Kenny (Danger Zone, Footloose) Loggins
@connfyoozed I think Wikipedia is a pretty good source. Have you ever read the comments on Wikipedia? There are an army of nerds monitoring all postings and changes to Wikipedia at all times therefore Wikipedia is an awesome source of info. Just a thought.
@guanajo7 It's a good source of info, but I do not always believe that it is a good source for 100% correct info. There is now way that every statement there can be verified as fact. I don't mean to knock Wiki, but if I really want to find something out, I will start there, and then find other sources to back it up.
Thank you for posting such great audio!! Quality counts, and I am grateful. One of my personal theme songs.Still dear friends with the one I shared this song with.41 years now. The Whispers are right. It just gets better with time.
I'm of this generation of this music Many of us think music 60-80's is best. Music seemed to make sense, send a message, Today seems people have a hard time finding something meaningful to say. so much explicit cuss filled noise. A friend of mine said yeras ago "That's what ear wax is for, to protect your eardrums from that noise". I think it's funny that years from now our kids will listen to todays music & talk about how good it was compared to the music they'll be listening too then
Religious Hypocrisy; apathy killed "our love 4 God and our fellow man", hence the death rattle humming... the joyous music of real life died under the heavy boots of "The Beat". Long Live Peace and Love Thru Jesus Christ ;-) LL aka5050 lvnv
I still can't get over the fact that Listen to the Music and this song are both by the Doobie Brothers, complete different in styles but just amazing all the same
i know the younger generation is tired of hearing how unlucky they are not growing up with this music around. and yes we were lucky to have been able to hear this stuff and attach it to our memories and nostalgia. but lets be honest with the younger generation......youre music truly does suck a donger. how many times are you gonna sing about being friggin depressed, we dont care, shut up, go to your room.
@thelastquincy559 Yupp I`m as white as snow and I got the power to kick your whitetrash ass to kingdom come. Name the place and the time, or do your meth and simply go with your flow.
This song makes me remember my days as a kid. Even though this song came out years before I was born, I was lucky enough that my mom liked good music and now I can pass this on to my kids. Music after the 90's turned down hill.

I've been disappointed that (so far at least) St. Louis hasn't had Michael McDonald sing the National Anthem or God Bless America at the World Series games at Busch Stadium. Michael is a St. Louis native, after all.
really never knew Michael Jackson was singing the chorus and high notes. He did the vocals and recommended the notes. Mj makes gold. love Michael McDonalds voice as well, nice combo
@kitty21059 No wonder I like this so much never knew MJ played a hand in this . When I think of this song it kinda reminds me of like a MJ up tempo flare about it
When rap first hit the scene it was fun and cool i.e the sugarhill gang. And it was still cool from the 80s to the early 2000s but of course, that's my opinion. Now it's not even worth listening to. But in reference to the comment below - there is wack rock music and pop music i agree - so i don't know why people choose to only single out rap music. Technically speaking all the crap that's playing on the radio today isn't worth listening to ... they all pretty much sound alike.
Now THAT'S what I call Music. I have been told by someone that I have too much love for the songs of the past, that good music has been made in recent years. I can't say that I agree, but I will say that some of the music today is not meant for those of us that are grown up and mature, but for a new breed. Listen to these oldies, and you will see why I love songs like these! :)
@brianpadrickdrake i love to believe it, but i hear only one voice!!? soo... i dont get it!! at the end there is this high voice in the back. but thats not MJ. maybe he really went loco at t he end of his life...
ALL of you little fuckers out there bringing drama to this beautiful song deserve to have your fucking faces smashed in. Take that shit over a Beiber video or something.
This is one of those songs I'd always hear on the radio (along with That's the Way of the World, September, etc.) but never know the name of it… now I know it!

And, best of all, no rap or hiphop shit. It was just a great, great time for music. Those of you who were there will agree with me and you rappers who don't, well, fuck you.
@n8tureboy I agree with you dude. It's gotten so that if I cant listen to old school 70's, 80's, and 90's, then I'll listen to instrumental music ! Hell I'll even take classical music over today's music!
Yes sir! We agree then! Let's boycott these music industry suits till they start signing some real talent. I'd like to kick those suits in the balls for putting this noise out there on the public airwaves! What are they thinking??? Money??? Who pays to listen to Lady Gagme for goodness sake!
These poor kids today wouldn't know good music if it smacked them upside their heads, LOL!
Let's teach them about real tunes, real talent, real passion.
@n8tureboy LOL- I witcha dude! In fact, you can say I started boycotting the industries a few years back! Seriously I cant tell you when the last time i listen to today's radio and I haven't bought Cd's in ages since their is nothing out there I like unless its old school music. Yea today it's mostly about profit and as an artist and an amateur musician myself, it should be about expressing oneself. Basically, there's no unique ness (I guess I spelled that correctly) in music anymore :-(
@smokiebird06 I agree with your love for the music & what a great time it was to live in but to show such ignorant intolerance to a whole genre of music and its fans is shameful to peace loving people like the doobie brothers
& if one gives $150 for a ticket (btw thats called inflation) and wants to know more about that artists life, can u blame them?
everything u have just said is childish blathering from an ignorant sheep.
just love the music. pure and simple, and if u dont agree, well, fuck u
@smokiebird06 I WAS THERE & I TOTALLY DISAGREE !! MUSIC IS MUSIC - LIKE LIFE - IT'S ALWAYS CHANGING !!! HIP-HOP IS WITHOUT QUESTION TOPPING EVERYTHING ELSE RIGHT NOW !!! LOL - THERE'S NOT EVEN A "VISIABLE CLOSE, SECOND PLACE" !! A HALF-WAY DECENT , ("SO-CALLED")"R&R GROUP", HAS NOT EMERGED, RELEASED A TRACK, CD NOTHING FOR WELL OVER A DECADE NOW !!! LOL - DON'T WORRY YO - YOU AIN'T ALONE !!! LOL - THERE'S STILL LOTTA FOOLS WAITING FOR ELVIS TO COME BACK TOO !!! LOLOL !! :-D LOL !
@CADIEUXGR hiphop is actually fading away now, hiphop has reached it's peak during the late 90's to early 2000... but it still popular as an underground music just like metal but no longer popular in mainstream media.
@smokiebird06 LOL...wow I'm 29 and I say to myself I wish I could have been born in the early 70's to experience the decade and what it was like then. I was raised on Michael McDonald music I remember as a kid in the 80's my dad would play his music constantly and he still does. I thought Michael McDonald was a black guy...lol. I love Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers.
@smokiebird06 what does rap have to do wit anything theres most definitely some wack rock shit goin on right now and dont get me started on pop muisc...music in general just isnt as good ...so fuck you old man " back in my day, we could get a snickers for a dime and a bag of chips for a penny " i bet you was gon say that next... just enjoy the fuckin song ...shit
i have and will always love this song.....an oldie but goodie....michael is just a awesome singer..................love these guys. this is what real singing sounds like people......
@bigbaby4530 ...you may be "black", BUT YOU STILL A NIGGER & "IGNORANT" AS ALL FUCKIN' WHITE HILLBILLES YO !!!!! WHAT THE FUCK, DOES "SKIN COLOR" HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT ????????? MUTHA - FUCKA - "MOVE ON ALREADY" !!! Y'ALL NIGGA'S ARE SILL OUT FUCKIN' FAT-ASS WHITE WOMEN - THAT NO WHITE MAN WOULD FUCKING WANT LOL!!! JUST CUZ YOU ALL BURIED IN "HISTORICAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL BULLSHIT" !! DOES UR DUMB-ASS KNOW THAT JEWS WERE SLAVES TOO ???? QUIT PISS-WHINING & FUCKIN MOVE ON ALREADY !!
@CADIEUXGR Jews and Blacks struggles are incomparable, absolutely no comparison. Please take the caps off you bigot, you live in a fantasy world, you have no right to tell someone to move on until they have the strength to move on you piece of shit. Blacks are actually moving on, but when a racist white person say something racist to blacks, blacks then bring up slavery for ammunition. Go away, and just fuck off.
Like boz scaggs and steve miller it transports you back in time yet still sounds as fresh and brilliant today.Oh for songs like this in the charts today.fat chance that this will happen with award shows and business ruling the roost again.
oh, i wouldn't be negative, it's a normal conversation, and yes, maybe you're wright and i'm wrong, so we learn again something we didn't know, cause he loved the doobie brothers, and went to see them in concert back in those days.. and somethimes in other songs, you could hear him very good, in others you have to listen really good, and with this song they sing really high notes.anyway, a brilliant song and if he did backing vocals, even better ;)
Oh Tracy you can't use any of my songs.

And, best of all, no rap or hiphop shit. It was just a great, great time for music. Those of you who were there will agree with me and you rappers who don't, well, fuck you.

@smokiebird06
I agree with you! I love the 70's and the 80's especially, but I'm in total agreement with you.
I can't stomach this tripe they call "music" today. I refuse to acknowledge it as music, it's noise and nothing more.
n8tureboy 7 months ago
@n8tureboy I agree with you dude. It's gotten so that if I cant listen to old school 70's, 80's, and 90's, then I'll listen to instrumental music ! Hell I'll even take classical music over today's music!
losatron 7 months ago
@losatron

@CADIEUXGR hiphop is actually fading away now, hiphop has reached it's peak during the late 90's to early 2000... but it still popular as an underground music just like metal but no longer popular in mainstream media.

I was raised on Michael McDonald music I remember as a kid in the 80's my dad would play his music constantly and he still does. I thought Michael McDonald was a black guy...lol. I love Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers.

Go away, and just fuck off.

oh, i wouldn't be negative, it's a normal conversation, and yes, maybe you're wright and i'm wrong, so we learn again something we didn't know, cause he loved the doobie brothers, and went to see them in concert back in those days.. and somethimes in other songs, you could hear him very good, in others you have to listen really good, and with this song they sing really high notes.anyway, a brilliant song and if he did backing vocals, even better ;)
