  • DAVID!!! OUTSTANDING, DEAR FRIEND!! Thanks so so much for sharing your incredible talent. I have a nearly five month old great granson, and when he gets old enough to start learning to play an instrument, I'm hoping to guide him to the steel guitar. I'm sure he'll enjoy your playing as much as I. You make those of us with absolutely no musical talent very happy with your willingness to share. I wish you great health and a prosperous life. Ole Johnny B.

  • good guy !

  • This is a cool version of the song. I much prefer this to a fiddle version.

  • Hands down, the best I've heard not played by someone wearing rhinestones... and maybe I'm being a bit biased by not saying the best I've heard period...

  • Looks to me you just re-wrote that song for an entirely different instrument. Nice! Fiddle relies on half those notes in a different way than picking. bravo

  • Mistakes, huh? Well, umm.. Keep trying, you'll get it one day.

  • Hello From Indiana, and THANKS DAVE for sharing your wonderful talent. You played the OBS the best I've ever heard it played on steel. All Thumbs UP, and Straight To My Favorites. THANKS DAVE, C.W.

  • bloody fantastic.learning it myself. my question , how are you playing the diesel engine horn sound.....

    shagpoint100

  • I don't want to know it's from blablabla song I have only got one thing to say: THIS IS GREAT

  • Mr. Hartley, You should come over to The U.S. and play here. I'm sure you have plenty of fans. Any band would welcome you to play some gigs with them...Great sound.

  • Dave ! Why don't you have some albums out ? I just surfed across your site and I am impressed. You play very well >

  • All three versions simply amazing! Huge thumbs up.

  • Very nice Dave, well played!!! nice picking!

  • Enis,you dipstick!!!!!!

  • I wish to thank you all for your comments to my youtube broadcasts. It is very much appreciated. I do try and contact you all personally if there's any questions that I have been asked, and I also make note of all your requests too. I have some great ideas for future videos and I will try and play some of your requests also.

Wishing you all a happy Christmas and a New Year.

    Sincerely, David Hartley

  • Brilliant ! Could almost hear some Albert Lee in there too.

  • Haha, great video! Thanks for sharing.

  • love it. fantastic!

  • Awesome. Thank you. Thumbs up.

  • that is very very good! nice work.

  • Is that 3 pedals?4 knee levers?

  • i would so want to learn how to play that

  • What tuning are you in !?!?!?!?!?! and would you suggest for a lap, 6string steel ?

  • Hi. It's tuned to E9th..I have always played pedal steel and no nothing much about lap steels. There's a section on the steel guitar forum called 'non-pedal'. I think there would be lots of people there who could help you with your enquiry for a 6 string lap steel.. Many regards from David Hartley

  • @ryandude1988 hallo, I think I can help you, try on yout lapsteel the tuning E6 Tuning

EG - BC - EG or try the E7 Tuning : BDEG - BE

Than it sounds like a pedalsteel guitar

  • Fantastic!!!

  • Fantastic!!!!

  • Hi David, just a note from an old guitar player in The United States. I have played lead guitar with country music bands since it was still referred to as Hill Billy Music. All of the bands had a steel guitar player and i am now playing with a group working out of Flushing Michigan that is fronted by a pedal steel guitar player.. You are one of the best Pedal Steel players i have heard. Your sound is fantastic.

  • @guitarplayerbjc Many thanks for your comments. regards from David Hartley.

  • Good gaud ole mighty damn! This guy is HOT!

  • I was just talkin' loosely with the 'karaoke' statement. The background music fits here - it just sounds somewhat artificial behind your playing (which is awesome), that's all.

  • dave when are you giong to come to hollands you are the geatist

  • Man your train horn emulations are radical. Lonesome and erie! Just cool as hell!

  • Bobbe Seymour stuff..Great Blocking too

  • WOW David Your SMOKIN!! Almost as good as Buddy Emmons version( but not yet)

  • i train horse too and can't find stuff like this for my i pod. u like honky tonk music?

  • I've seen Tom Brumley, Red Rhodes and Sneaky Pete Kleinow play, and they're all great players, no question. But you're better than all of them put together! Unbelievable talent and skill. What a gift.

  • Great! Love the delay FX around 1:48

  • Many thanks to all of you who have commented on this and many other of my videos too. It is very much appreciated. I try to answer most emails and private messages, but I thought I would like to say a big thanks here too.

    Regards from David Hartley.

  • You never cease to amaze me with what YOU can do with a pedal steel guitar. Awesome my dear friend!!

  • when you look down, you look like tony soprano... hahaha. but you did amazing. dont let anyone say otherwise

  • Geez. What could a person ADD to this? What we have here is a BRIT playing a violin song with a steel guitar, and nailing it!

David, please tell us when you release your first CD . . . and please include at least 3 different versions of Orange Blossom Special.

You must have some other good stuff, and I'm going to try to find it here on Youtube... but thank you so much for this amazing account of OBS. (A BRIT on a STEEL GUITAR!

    --Dennis1

  • Howdy Dave

Awesome playing...I am a guitar player and I've gotta ask you...at 39 secs when you pick that fast chorus arpeggio pattern, is that all picked? or do you use the digital delay on that section?

(I have seen the delay video)

If you do pick it all, it must have taken you a lot of work to get it up to that speed.

The thumb would have to be moving really fast!

Could you suggest any books on right hand technique, I would love to do that on guitar with finger picking.

    Cheers

    Harvey

  • I love the sharp sound of that steel!!

  • i dub you a texican.

    Five stars!

  • I don't know why I've waited so long to comment! A guy from the U.K., humbly playing the All-American fiddle tune on a steel guitar?! What's wrong with this picture? Nothing, that's what. I love this piece, and I play it over and over. Geez, I'm amazed. Do you have other stuff?

  • hi janet here wot wonderful movement you have with your fingers

  • Actually, I believe I like this one better than your version 2. Great job.

  • Well I'll be goddamned. You're one helluva slider!

  • Hi Dave, I have been doing it for 35 years now and still learning. But I practiced non stop for about a year I suppose before I played my first gig which was at a theatre in Bury St Edmunds, UK.. Dropped in at the deep end when our steelie never turned up, and I played Bass at the time !! David

  • Many thanks. I am going to try and have a lesson or two. Just to see how I take to it.

  • Is Dave playing on an E9 neck with a Nashville tuning?

  • I've heard many steel players and I think this is probably the best ever. I mean, tops even Don Helms, John Hughey, Leon McAuliffe, et al. Great! I play lead guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and play with a guy who plays a 12-string pedal steel. Tnx for sharing your talent.
