You know, I have seen some of the best musicians in the world get on stage at a small venue and be relegated to the role of background music. When I play solo, background music is the role I play more often than not. And why should it be insulting? We all listen to music at all times in our lives... at our lowest moments, while making love to a new lover; so we treat the music around us as our soundtrack. Someone in the background met someone for the first time to this music... pretty cool.
