I usually HATE couples where the guy is or was abusive to the girl, but Gerza is the one exception. I think it's because Gerard/Jellal was having his brain messed up by Zeref when he was evil, and when he had amnesia, and later when he was imprisoned, he was shown thinking of Erza and feeling remorse. Unlike SasuSaku and other anime couples I can name, Gerard does actually seem to love or at least really like Erza in canon, it's not just a fan delusion.
