One thing to watch out for: a certain amount of line slippage is normal, especially when your thumb is cold and wet. The strip of rubber is an excellent answer. But sometimes the slippage is caused by something not quite right in the casting method or the tackle adjustments. Here the strip will probably make life easier, but the only sure remedy is to correct whatever is going wrong.
I am going to try this as one of my issues with gaining any distance is the worry about dragging and not holding the line firm enough during the cast. I don't think I am letting the rod load as I let the line "creep" as it slips.

Rubber cut from a tyre inner tube is OK. Butyl pond liner material is even better.
