THIS IS THE BEST EC SONG. HANDS DOWN HIS MOST FECUND MATERIAL. HE DOES WHAT EVERY GOOD MURDER-BALLADEER DOES; GET YOU TO SYMPATHIZE WITH A MURDERER OR PSYCHOPATH. JESUS IF THE INSANE CLOWN POSSE ONLY KNEW WHAT YOU COULD GET ACCOMPLISHED WITH SOME POISE AND RESTRAINT AND A JAZZMASTER1
Sent shivers up my spine the whole time. Why is Elvis Costello such a beast? You can't get more real in a song then he does here. Probably one of his best perfomances of this song ever. So much emotion in his lyrics. Thumbs up if you agree E.C. is the king of rock!
This is the antithesis of a lovesong. It's about jealousy, possession and obsession - the kind of obsession where people get hurt, even killed. The insert from "Down By The River" liked by so many is unnecessary. I think it actually detracts from the power of the song. The looney Right used to rant about the imagined satanic messages hidden in heavy metal music. This would have them foaming at the mouth. It is genuinely satanic, evil, dark and, regretably, so very true to life.
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written and I am a music snob! With that said Elvis gets more props from me for obviously discovering Zach Galifianakis and letting him play bass until he was ready to go on to greater things.
This is musical art in the highest. "Didja call his name out?......didja, did ja call his name out, DID JA, aeh- aeh-AEH-aeh.... as he held you down, oh.......no......mydarlin', not with THAT clown...........". Then he effin' takes us down with him. Genius.
I didn't care for the studio album version of this song. Then I saw Elvis perform it live in Seattle a couple of years ago and it sent chills up my spine--especially his remarkable falsetto vocal at the end.
This is an extended version of the song where Elvis really works the performance and works the guitar like crazy. IMO, he actually goes into Kurt Cobain territory a bit here.
To me, this is the definitive performance of the song that I have heard so far.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
listen to the actual recorded song... Way better than this live crap. He isn't even trying to sing, which is, um, 1/2 the song ROFL. But the grungier guitar riffs used here are great.
@markjohnsonii Let me guess, you just wanted to give a different opinion then 2 milj people ;-) Come on, this is raw emotion, the recorded version is a sweet love song for kiddies comparing to this ,but hey you,re alowed your opinion ofcourse haha
I am now an Elvis fan! After I pick up my heart from the floor I will proceed to the record store and get all of this mans albums. Oh, damn! There are no more record stores! I will find a way.
Bobby McDoogle---Elvis use Auto-tune? Absolutely not! A ridiculous idea! If you'd ever seen him live you'd know that he routinely sings with no microphone at all. Even after 30+ years his voice is still strong & powerful and he has great range.
For a guy in a suit and a pink shirt, that's the most amazing thing I've ever heard! Seriously, I must've watched/listened to this 50 times and it's just the most killing version of this song ever....always loved him and his consistently superb level of song writing despite being hyper prolific and artistically restless......"did you call his name out, as he pinned you down....oh no my darling, not with that clown"
you know how when people say " Elvis, the king of rock & roll" this is the Elvis they speak of... they just don't know it! such a poet! so passionate! he IS the king. " I want to see that he pleases you, more than i do!"... "Did you call his name out, as he held you down?!" (I did elvis, i did).
@djduran listen to "I'm not angry"-Elvis Costello. I think It's on this year's model... maybe my aim is true... an older album, for sure... great song, one of many.
Damn... How he puts so many feeling in this song. You don't need to listen to the lyrics to know and feel what this song is about. And it's just lovely how he 'praises' Neil Young in that subtle way.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I love this version, it's a lot less subtle than the original studio recording... and I was going to voice a comment about his singing being really great live too, and then I caught an earful of auto-tune... hmmm... but he still rips on that guitar at the end :D
This song always tears at my heart. It is sad, personal, obsessive, and incredibly well written.Itvreminds me also of the experience of loosing your first love
This song is amazingly composed of phrases I love. "I woke up, and one of us was crying". "It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for". "I'm not ashame to say I cried for you". "I want to hear he pleases you more than I do". This song can be a romantic (maybe obsessive) song, or a break up, but anyways its a beautiful song to listen to
(wwillow1) as was. still this song haunts me , never forget the first time i heard it, i was blown away, i always listen to this in a dark candle lit room , the comments on this songs, shows the power of these lyrics, and the justice delivered them by Elvis Costello.. i still stand by what i wrote previously, one of the greastest songs ever written, its lyrics are intense and seductive, and chills me to the bone.....BEAUTIFUL
