or electric... you DO know there's electricity just like on any other house, right? only in this case... it's gathered by solar panes and wind turbines. So, you CAN have an electrical stove.

@trxmedia - I like the fact that we're looking at a home is not only in sync with the planet, it also provides the home owner with an environment that can provide the basics of life. While I'm still trying to appreciate the concept of on-site sewage treatment, I still like the fact that an Earthship has a SOLUTION for this matter.

@waellerbe I also like that. for the same reasons and sometimes I wish I were able to build one of those for myself, but unfortunately, at the present moment, it's impossible, for me at least.

@desertblbuesman - I was thinking the same thing. Thus far I understand that the Earthship has a system for heating and treating waste, so that it can break down into a form that can be used as compost for food production. This sounds crazy to some folks, yet manure (from animals) has been used for several years to create a rich soil which helps plans grow very well. Eco systems are amazing to behold.

where do they get the gas from for the gas stove?

some of them use limited propane.. I think most of them have some propane as an energy back up b/c New Mexico drops to 30 below in the winter - so in case you had an emergency..

I wouldn't use aluminum cans in construction, but I love the concept of re-using materials for constructing a building that is efficient and self-sustaining. I think they look better than the stick boxes that most people seem to live in. Right now I live in an inefficient uninsulated 200+ year old house. I would love to be able to build an efficient house from old tires and other recycled materials.

@defenderofliberty - You are NOT alone. I also love the concept of re-using materials for construction. Just last night the concept of tires filled with "rammed earth" inspired me to consider filling used plastic containers with "rammed earth" in order to create a unique "non-structure wall."

It's almost SCARY to look at some of the townhouses today, which are built like a "stick boxes" and chicken coops, and then they have the nerve to charge SO MUCH for this stuff.

@defenderofliberty - One more note regarding the "stick boxes." In addition to going into debt (30 year mortgage) for this type of home, we still have to PAY for utilities, depend on the CITY for our own water supply, and burn up gallons of gas to go to the STORE to purchase all of our food.
