I once lived in Singapore. I wish I could say I was surprised by this film, but I'm not. There is something quite ruthless, cruel sometimes, about the way Singapore works and thinks.
Don't get me wrong I have a lot of respect for Singapore and many good friends there. Singaporeans have a lot to be proud of - but for some, that justified pride in their country, has a negative dark side: namely a contempt for people from other countries.

I've always been thinking that Singapore was an advanced country. I lived in that and the neighbouring Malaysia 7 years of my live. We had domestic helpers and they were as equal as my sister and mother. But still felt really bad to have someone called “maid”. I had never realized that there would be innocent beautiful young women out there that silently suffer the massive pain of their lives in the so-called developed country. Shame on you Singapore.

A lot Singaporeans are paid year end bonus handsomely->2 to 6 months salary(including government staff : Public service , Military, police, Firemen, Teachers, doctors, nurses and many others). Questions : Do they pay their "wonder" maid atleast one month bonus ?

I am an employer and I can say that it really depends on how employers can provide good living conditions for their domestic help. Employers now also have to go through a course to be informed of suitable conditions for their maids. Rather than condemning employers, I think we also need to understand how the "maid industry" help a certain population group within Indonesia and the Philippines find work which otherwise their own country cannot provide at this moment.

I used to work in singapore for 6 months as a general worker . 7 chapel road marine parade is my employer's address. I am burmese nationality . I had contract with them for 2 years but they fired me after 6 months without any reason.Singaporean never treat us equally.

the agency is fucked up, but most singaporeans are not. get the difference? ill-treating of maids are actually not that common, i think. The number of cases of ill-treating of maids is about the same as the number of maids who ill-treat their employers (loads of maids run off to their embassies). But of course not all employers are decent, and not all maids run off to their countries' embassies.

Anyway, I am ashamed of such behaviour by Singaporean employers. As already mentioned, not everybody treats their maids this way. It is such a blessing to be able to afford fulltime help at home. I've worked as a livehome help in the US as a Singaporean college student and I know how hard it is to work with no days off. I have also lived with maids in SG and realise that every maid is different and every employer is different. There are good maids and bad maids. Good employers and bad employers.

Singaporeans will be judged by the way they treat their foreign maids. Most of them work +80 hours a week for little money. Many are sleeping in bomb shelter rooms without windows, many are not getting enough food. Yes, there are people in Singapore who ration slices of (cheap) toast!

If anything there should be more work done in the places where these maids come from in the form of unions to make sure these maids know what they're getting into because for the most part, they are not well-educated. This documentary is strongly flawed because it fails to give both sides of the arguement - like I've mentioned, Singaporeans are only being rational and taking precautions. Plus these maids are told what they're getting into before they come here and if they fail to read the fine print and complain now, sorry - this is it. It's their fault.

Well, I am a singaporean but.. I have to said yes there are some ppl who ill treated their maid but this is vice versa.. I have a maid at home to take care off my grandma so I know what is the feeling like as an employer. There is a new law in singapore tht we have to give maids to give off days. If there's is no off days, we have to pay extra as insentives...
im singaporean i live in malaysia now but i go there like 2-4 times every year when i stay there with my relatives i stay for like a week they have a maid and i see they treat their maid proper and she does a good job they also buy her food from outside sometimes when its not her dayoff they let her off like for 5-6 hours on weekends and let her visit her family this is just bullshit this video is nothing but a jealousy against singapore
I am 1/2 singaporean, my mother moved from Singapore to australia 20 years ago. I have been going with her to singapore every year since I was about 3 (I am 18) I always stay with my relatives they do have a maid, they give the maid 1 day off a week, they also pay for her flights to go back to her home country to see her parents and her child once a year

I've been a maid in Singapore for 4 years,I did not had any off days but my employer was kind to let me go out sometimes.I was so good to them,served them very well,but at the end of everything they almost black listed me of some rumours but here I am now a successful person in Denmark, singapore's maid was a worst nightmare i ever had cos I had been an au pair but very far from a maid.i think the singapore government needs to pay attention and have pitty to the maids and treat them as human

I've always been thinking that Singapore was an advanced country. I lived in that and the neighbouring Malaysia 7 years of my live. We had domestic helpers and they were as equal as my sister and mother. But still felt really bad to have someone called “maid”. I had never realized that there would be innocent beautiful young women out there that silently suffer the massive pain of their lives in the so-called developed country. Shame on you Singapore.

I am an employer and I can say that it really depends on how employers can provide good living conditions for their domestic help. Employers now also have to go through a course to be informed of suitable conditions for their maids. Rather than condemning employers, I think we also need to understand how the "maid industry" help a certain population group within Indonesia and the Philippines find work which otherwise their own country cannot provide at this moment.

People are aggressive and do what ever to avoid the mediocre lifestyle. Think about it that why do Singaporeans a higher maid per family ration than other countries? We are not the only country in the region who employs a large number of foreign domestic helpers. And the majority of maids here are treated okay. The government is already putting in massive effort to stop this. There are other more problematic modern day slavery issues in many other countries. The number of cases of ill-treating of maids is about the same as the number of maids who ill-treat their employers (loads of maids run off to their embassies). Anyway, I am ashamed of such behaviour by Singaporean employers. As already mentioned, not everybody treats their maids this way. It is such a blessing to be able to afford fulltime help at home. I've worked as a livehome help in the US as a Singaporean college student and I know how hard it is to work with no days off. I have also lived with maids in SG and realise that every maid is different and every employer is different. There are good maids and bad maids. Good employers and bad employers.

Conditions in their home countries is one thing.
Singaporeans will be judged by the way they treat their foreign maids. Most of them work +80 hours a week for little money. Many are sleeping in bomb shelter rooms without windows, many are not getting enough food. Yes, there are people in Singapore who ration slices of (cheap) toast!
Many people do not realize that these women are not servants but employees who's rights and dignity should be respected. Too much to ask for?

If anything there should be more work done in the places where these maids come from in the form of unions to make sure these maids know what they're getting into because for the most part, they are not well-educated. So Jan, please - you must be old enough to realise this world isn't perfect and there's little we can do about it. But I heard the UN has space for more cock-eyed optimists if you're interested :)

This documentary is strongly flawed because it fails to give both sides of the arguement - like I've mentioned, Singaporeans are only being rational and taking precautions. Plus these maids are told what they're getting into before they come here and if they fail to read the fine print and complain now, sorry - this is it. It's their fault.

I have a maid at home to take care off my grandma so I know what is the feeling like as an employer. There is a new law in singapore tht we have to give maids to give off days. im singaporean i live in malaysia now but i go there like 2-4 times every year when i stay there with my relatives i stay for like a week they have a maid and i see they treat their maid proper and she does a good job they also buy her food from outside sometimes when its not her dayoff they let her off like for 5-6 hours on weekends and let her visit her family this is just bullshit this video is nothing but a jealousy against singapore

I am 1/2 singaporean, my mother moved from Singapore to australia 20 years ago. I have been going with her to singapore every year since I was about 3 (I am 18) I always stay with my relatives they do have a maid, they give the maid 1 day off a week, they also pay for her flights to go back to her home country to see her parents and her child once a year
Please don't put all singaporeans down, yes there are some bad ones but in every country there are bad people!

SIngaporeans has known for being rude people. THIS IS PROVEN specially those Expatriates in SG, educated or not have told this issues over the internet. I believe that not all singaporeans are rude and bad. I haven't been to singapore and I will be having my intership in this month, but i am not afraid because i know that most singaporeans have good heart.

This is just slavery, why does the race of a made determine their wages? Why can't they practice religion? Why can't they have relationships? We all have to WORK but we still have our rights. As a Singaporean, i'm not oblivious that such things are indeed happening. Not to mention in other countries too.
I have to say its utterly cruel. And no matter how u look at it, it really seems like slavery but with little or even no benefits.
And one more thing, the maid agencies actually tells those maids that that male indian worker is dumb.....tt's right out degrading.
Have some fucking respect for others.....they are humans too.
