She pretty much looses her mind. Her son and his girlfriend/wife are on heroin and they are trying to start a business. Their friend (also an addict) is trying to make it off the streets. It's really good. It's not just a drug movie. Google it. Watch it. Read the book.

I have never watched the movie, but i absolutely love the same named song. After reading these comments i see that this movie is full of emotions...that depresses you, but you feel kinda pure, better after that. Things like movies, music and animations (and even books) that make that effect are usually really the best, but being depressed is after all something that we avoid. So, its kinda hard because of that sometimes... I decided im going to watch the movie in the following summer vaciations.

I hate and yet love this movie. It destroyes every damn trace of happiness, it kills every dream you have for at least one day. But when you manage to reborn, you'll finally feel alive again, and understand the hurting beauty of this movie. I don't understand why it is less known than trainspotting. Trainspotting lies, Requiem for a Dream tells nothing but the trouth. So prepare for your requiem, but feel free to smile when it's over.

I really enjoyed how the film covered ALL forms of addiction (not just drugs like heroin or coke), in delving into food addiction and over-medication with Harry's mother, Sara.
What seemed to link all 4 characters together imo was their inability to cope with the reality of their situations, as well as their internal issues, so they smothered those feelings by feeding their addictions, be it with food, sex, or heroin.
I think the Movie is one of the best I have ever seen,
I love the charakters and the atmosphere this Movie bringts to me :)
Also it's very intresting to see how fast drugs ruin your life..

Possibly one of the worst shot films I have ever seen. On top of that, there is a crap score. However, the power of this film and the PHENOMINAL acting makes this a top 10 film in my book. Instead of whining, you could offer a way to make the preview better if you are that dissatisfied. If the trailer gives it away, then it is a movie with no substance.
@southof15th yo man (or woman), no disrespect, but requiem for a dream is about drug addicts, all that stuff you said is implied by saying that, it's not an oversimplification, it's occam's razor. yes there are many addictions and we all have them and we all satisfy them one way or another. but EVERY character in this film does drugs.

@PoddaJawada i'd have to respectfully disagree again, almost all of hubert selby jr's. popular books are about hard lives in the ghetto's of new york, dealing with the violence, sexual conflicts and drug abuse. he is a very straight-foward, personal experience type writer, he does not use a lot of underlying themes or shadowy meanings in his books, and since this movie is almost exactly like the book, i'd have to say it's mainly, like 95%, about how drug abuse can affect people's lives

This movie made me sit in a corner and cry for a couple of hours before I went to watch some shitty cartoons and eat some chocolate. I guess the NC 17 thing is there for a reason ._.

this is the most frightening movie i've ever seen!! and what makes it even worse is there are people out there that experience these situations EVERY SINGLE DAY! f*ckkk! i'm truly terrified!

Possibly one of the worst shot films I have ever seen. On top of that, there is a crap score. However, the power of this film and the PHENOMINAL acting makes this a top 10 film in my book. I admit, I found the film through my love for 30 Seconds To Mars-- boo me all you like, hardcore fans-- and I was (initially) disapointed in the film. I have a problem with high expectations. But, recalling all that I had seen, I thought "Wow... How did I think that was bad?"

@clarkispotamia HA, I only discovered 30STM due to this movie! That was just before they played the UK for the first time in the Electric Ballroom when the first album was released so I saw that and got my ticket signed by Jared.

@UUreviews Well, perhaps not crap, but out of place. It seems too "epic" for the movie. I see it in some 80's horror film or some epic battle scene in some knight movie.

I feel kind of sorry for Jennifer Connelly for having to do the "ass to ass" scene towards the end of the movie. Back then she was a virtually unknown actress so she had to do stuff like that. But still, that scene was just unbearably difficult to watch through.

Anyone can have his/her personal reason, you can't possibly know about that. This movie could have reminded something unpleasant that particular person experienced in the past, not even talking that somebody could just find this movie boring.
I personally recommend you to check out "one flew over the cuckoo's nest","The Clockwork Orange", "Amadeus", "Full Metal Jacket", "American Beauty" - those are really great

This movie is the most realistic film about drug's temporary benefits, and long term horrorific outcomes.
It's a defenate wake up call about how far people will take it, to live the dream and feel some sort of serenity, cause of the recklessness and confusion of drug addiction.

no, it's NOT about drug addicts. oversimplification has always been the most annoying part about hearing simpletons explain the plot. it's about the lengths people will go to to fulfill their addictions. be it heroin, food, sex, love. the depths people are willing to sink to in order to get their fix be it a high or an orgasm or chocolate.
part two of my comment - this trailer is TERRIBLE! wow what an injustice. this is one of the top 3 or 4 of my favorite movies ever, and I hate this trailer.

@southof15th Yes and it is about the difference in how society recognize the different types of addictions- how it support the ones and condemns the others. And how it (the society) creates conditions, supplies the means and then feed itself with desperate actions that are people willing to take to survive.
I believe that addiction is futile attempt of individual to cure themselves. And it is the society who puts the virus in you for its own benefit.

@southof15th first, your observation about the movie is fair. You are articulate and insightful. Second, you sound like a total baby when you complain about the trailer. Instead of whining, you could offer a way to make the preview better if you are that dissatisfied. Moreover, I think the point of previews is to show the most memorable and dramatic parts in order to get people interested in seeing the entire movie. If the trailer gives it away, then it is a movie with no substance.

@southof15th yo man (or woman), no disrespect, but requiem for a dream is about drug addicts, all that stuff you said is implied by saying that, it's not an oversimplification, it's occam's razor. yes there are many addictions and we all have them and we all satisfy them one way or another. but EVERY character in this film does drugs.

@theheightsboy100 But drug addiction is not what the movie is a about, its merely a plot device. It's about the dreams people have, or rather life lies akin to what Henrik Ibsen had as a common theme in his works, and how people destroy themselves in pursuit of it.

@PoddaJawada i'd have to respectfully disagree again, almost all of hubert selby jr's. popular books are about hard lives in the ghetto's of new york, dealing with the violence, sexual conflicts and drug abuse. he is a very straight-foward, personal experience type writer, he does not use a lot of underlying themes or shadowy meanings in his books, and since this movie is almost exactly like the book, i'd have to say it's mainly, like 95%, about how drug abuse can affect people's lives

@southof15th Hmmm... not so sure I agree. I think it really is focused on drug *abuse* and how it derails every good intention, every good quality. "she'll come." "No, no she won't!"
The people in this movie, the ones who had dreams, dreams that are now dead. What do they have in common?
