I have been searching for this song since 1974. I never thought I would find it on Youtube. This song reminds me of my years stationed at Pearl Harbor,Hawaii. To the person who put it on here "Thanks a million. It brings back a lot of memories.
Nigel Olsson, born in Merseyside, England on 2/10/49, was Elton John's drummer from 1971 to 1976. He left to concentrate on his solo career, which resulted in four chart singles. "Only One Woman" reached #91 in 1975, "A Girl Like You" stalled at #107 in 1976, this one (his biggest) reached #18 at the end of 1978 and was followed by "A Little Bit Of Soap"," which hit #34 in the spring of 1979. The first two singles were on Elton's label, Rocket; the last two on Bang Records.
I have not heard this song since I was a teen. It brought me back to a simpler time and put a tear in my eye! Bring back the bell bottoms, bonne bell lipsmackers, Dr Scholls sandals, 45 records, Tiger Beat mags! We DID have it good!! :-)
i love the 70's music the best when music was music and it meant something and came from the heart i so miss it glad we have youtube 2 enjoy it all over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nigel, as a fellow percussionist all I can tell you it to keep on keeping on. It was you that inspired me to add Pisals and Pasties to my kit because you play them so well.
I too have been looking for this song for years. So many memories attached to it from over 30 years ago. I should be too old to cry over such trivia but this is a heartbreaker and a memory maker. Thank you so much.
The song was originally written and sung by Carl Storie and the Faith Band. Didn't know this "Nigel" guy sang it! What a loser! The Faith Band sings is way better!!
i was 25 years old when this song was released, Nigel was EltonjOHNS DRUMMER FOR EVER ALONG with jamie johnsotone and the Brilliant song writer 'Bernie Taupin , that made Elton a multimillionaire overnight
I was a senior in high school and a Radio DJ on weekends in 1979 when this tune came out. I heard it on the Wolfman Jack Show while driving home from a Mobile DJ gig last night and was reminded of it. YouTube is the only place I've found it so far. Must be long gone and hard to find just like stuff from Shaun Cassidy and Leif Garrett...remember them?
Actually, this song was released on the SAME DAY by the actually writer, Carl Storie with his band The Faith Band. They were on the charts at the same time but, due to their being a small Indiana band, they got to only number 56. Their version is more soulful.
Great song and very hard to find, this is one of my favorite one hit wonders of the 1970s, I can picture England Dan and John Ford Coley or Dan Fogelberg doing this song
@Doobie1975 Yeah, England Dan and John Ford Coley, definitely! I discovered them and Nigel on the American Countdown show on Radio 1 in the UK when I was a teenager; I loved them! This song was special because I had a huge crush on a guy named Nigel :) This is the first time I'm seeing what Nigel Olsson looked like - cute :)
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL.....FOND MEMORIES FROM ARLINGTON HIGHSCHOOL POUGHKEEPSIE,N.Y...........MISS ALL OF YOU.......HARD TO BELEIVE IT'S BEEN 32 YEARS......................GOD BLESS
I was looking for this song also. Back then when it came up I did not know much English; so it made it harder to find it. Thank you for posting it. It bring me nice memories of the high school years and my dear friends.
There was another song with a title similar to this one, which was performed by a totally different singer around the same year...it was a Jamaican-born Canadian lady named Claudja Barry, who sang "Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes". That was more of a disco song than this one, which was a slow ballad.
@thespeez This song should be a staple on the soft rock and oldies stations, not falling into obscurity, I didn't even know this song existed until late 2008 when I've heard it on the 70s Channel from Music Choice and I was really happy and surprised how great this song was, definitely one of the best songs of 1979
@thespeez I don't mean to sound dumb but what does PD mean? I hate it when the radio stations chooses to play the same songs over and over again and leaving out the others, I tend to like the obscure songs over the really famous ones anyday
Hey, I totally agree with you about radio stations playing the same 400 or so songs over and over! Because of the over-research and because of what I'll call the corporatism which has infiltrated the radio business, there is much less innovation now than in times past. Sure, you'll find exceptions to this but it's rare. I'm bold enough to admit that I'll choose an AM station with an innovative playlist over an FM with a 'safe' playlist any day of the week.
good song nigel had a few hits on his own, i need help locating a song it came out in 1979-80 its called im alive but i cant recall the group right off hand it was on electra records this band had 2 sucessful lp's then disbanded if anyone on here can recollect the bands name email me at jaygee356@hotmail.com thanks n happy new year all.
Thank you SO much for those memories, when things were simpler, this world was gentler, and music was THE BEST! I love this song so much! Radio sucks by not playing it - who cares for radio, anyway.
This was not unlike a lot of late '70s era love songs not unlike what Dan Hill, Kenny Nolan, Toby Beau, LeBlanc & Carr, Rex Smith, Michael Johnson and the like would've done. I'll confess I liked that sound and this song is no exception.
Carl Storie wrote this song first with his group "Faith Band" He and nigel realesed the song at the same time. Nigel had more success with it as he made it to #8 on the billboard charts, while faith band only made it to #54 but i just thought id post this as most people think nigel wrote the song.

So Coool!!! It brings back memories of girls with farah fawcett hair, chenele'5, windsong, bellbottom jeans , platform shoes and Bublegum Pop music. I know im just an old 70's tweener but MAN did we have it good or What???
I owned the cassette that this song was on back in '79. Played the heck out of this song, along with a "A Little Bit of Soap" and the "Chosen Few". Reminds me of the wasted summer of that year, (a good portion of it spent at Chicago's Summerfest at Navy Pier) when I was in that limbo stage of deciding what I was going to do with my life..go to college or keep slacking at age 20. (I ultimately went to college..Southern Illinois University, where I got my BS, Finance)
I've just heard this song on the 1970s channel from Music Choice and the song totally blew me away, definitely a great song that never gets alot of airplay.
La mejor cancion de los 80 ....... solo quedan recuerdos de esos momentos...Recuerdos de aquella juventud que vivimos y que servira para contarle a los hijos.... Nigel olsson vivira siempre en sus canciones y en el mundo entero..........
Nigel Olson, A great man, a great drummer and singer. But not a good song writer. I have this album on vinyl and it reeks of forgettable slow slongs. Only "A little Bit of Soap " stands out. The rest of it was well.......boring.
Also felt the same way when I met him a few years ago. First class gentleman and one of the greatest drummers on the planet! Very good singer too as evidenced here.
I remember my 16 year old sister was so disappointed when she couldn't go to one of his small venue concerts in NW suburban Chicago, summer '79. Nigel was appearing at a small club in the Prospect Heights area, similar to legendary Biddy Mulligan's (Rogers Park, Chicago) and she couldn't be admitted, as it was 21+ show.
Sorry for your sister as aside from a large venue, almost any small club in Chicago is a rockin place to see a band. My meeting was prior to an all-star jam I was hosting/leading. Had Alan White, Bernard Purdee, Derrick Painter (Great White), Tony Coleman (BB King) Bill Lordan & more, but the ONLY drummer I really wanted was Nigel. Unfortunately he had an F1 race the next day so couldn't make the jam. Never heard if he won the race, but the jam rocked! LOL! Thanks for your comment!
I agree. I also think that Carl's version sounds more timeless. This version definitely sounds dated in the 70s (cheesy strings). Still, both are good; it's a great song!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A great song! This is a poor imitation of, the origional; Which was done by the writer and composer, CARL STORIE!!! Carl recorded this classic with The Faith Band. Thanks, URN
This song was written by Carl Story and was first recorded by his band, the Faith Band, out of Indianapolis. This is a cover - I believe they charted around the same time...
Actually, I remember hearing from one of the other YouTube members that both charted on the same day...wonder how many times THAT'S happened in music history? ^_^
"The song doesn't have a memorable melody"? I find that interesting considering that when Nigel sings, "put on your dancing shoes", that's actually the title and a person doesn't need to finish the rest of the chorus. I guess perhaps you hear music differently than most people do. There are a tremendous amount of songs where the title of the song is the first line of the chorus such as: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" and "Open Arms" to name just a few!
OK, I've reconsidered. Also, being an editor on Wikipedia, we sure could use a photo of Nigel-- the one there barely shows him in the band. Anybody got a noncopyrighted photo? Please contact me via YouTube email. Thanks.
Yes it is a Nigel Olsson song. Nigel Olsson has recorded several albums including "nigel olsson's drum orchestra and chorus" in 1971, "nigel olsson" in 1975, "nigel olsson" (different album) in 1978, "nigel" 1979, "changing tides" 1980 and "move the universe-nigel olsson's drum orchestra and chorus part2" which I forget which year. Only a couple have been issued on cd and usually command high prices on ebay.
I have been searching for this song since 1974. I never thought I would find it on Youtube. This song reminds me of my years stationed at Pearl Harbor,Hawaii. To the person who put it on here "Thanks a million. It brings back a lot of memories.

A great song! This is a poor imitation of, the origional; Which was done by the writer and composer, CARL STORIE!!! Carl recorded this classic with The Faith Band. Thanks, URN

I had not heard this song since 1979. I used to love it. Did you know he was the drummer for Elton John?

Carl Storie wrote this and performed it with Faith Band. While both versions are great, I think Carl rocks it!

alright, it's a "bitch" song true, but i have to admit i did like it (don't tell anyone please)

The song doesn't have a memorable melody.

Thanks.

LOL Nigel had a solo career? I love Nigel great drummer,is this a nigel song?
godwhyisthistaken 4 years ago
Yes it is a Nigel Olsson song. Nigel Olsson has recorded several albums including "nigel olsson's drum orchestra and chorus" in 1971, "nigel olsson" in 1975, "nigel olsson" (different album) in 1978, "nigel" 1979, "changing tides" 1980 and "move the universe-nigel olsson's drum orchestra and chorus part2" which I forget which year. Only a couple have been issued on cd and usually command high prices on ebay.
