This was me, coming over the top. Tried herman's technique to stop over the top and it worked. However, i did block a lot of my shots to the right. Cannot wait to try this. The video on releasing the club is by far one of the best explanations i have viewed. Give it a try, it works.
Herman - I recently took a lesson with you and improved my backswing and posture significantly. I was having problems maintaining lag and was throwing the club right before impact. I think I've improved those problems significantly...however, I'm having a very hard time squaring the club at impact now and find myself blocking most of my shots. I was wondering your thoughts on trying a stronger grip? Could this help with getting square and potentially minimize the rotation needed?
@mjb4385 More lag usually makes it tougher to square up the face if you were accustomed to throwing it to square it up. Stronger grip will likely help - I prefer strong left hand but neutral right. The other option obviously is the "knuckles down" maneuver in the downswing to square that face. There is more stuff on my blog at hermanwilliamsgolf.
@hermanwilliamsgolf Thanks Herman! I tried a stronger grip at the practice range yesterday and was killing it! Your videos are awesome, it's really cool that you take the time to do this stuff! In your opinion, what is most important to consistent ball striking with a strong grip?
I'm pushing with my driver. I'm going to try this. I have another question. Why is it harder to hit a "draw" with my sandwedge than to do it with my driver?
@imsuprised Sand wedge has too much loft to create any significant sidespin - the loft of the face just shears the ball creating lift & backspin acting like a gyroscope holding it online. You might have 10,000 rpm's of backspin on the wedge vs. 3000 on driver - sidespin takes over w driver. Also driver catches more of the back of the ball vs the bottom. So with the face of a low-lofted club slightly closed to your swing path, you will get a more dramatic response in sidespin on a tilted axis.
Herman, I have been a classic over the top guy and my teacher has helped me with that. This video provides me with the information I need to better close the face to hit straight or draw shots. I appreciate your service. And it's still raining in Indiana! Jeff P.
If you have a stand bag with legs, park it right beside you about a clublength to the right of the ball (assuming you're right handed) so the bag itself is inclined at the same angle as your golf shaft in setup. We're using the bag to represent the "swing plane." Now swing without hitting the bag - it will straighten your takeaway and prevent the flattening, drop-in move coming down; otherwise you'll start breaking clubs. Good luck. I have a "stop shanking video" coming this week. - Herman
Reminds me of Hogan's advice to supinate the left wrist, keeping it bowed at impact. I'll give it a try on the range

Herman, do you have anything to help/stop coming from inside too much? this had led to shanks and blocked shots as well.

Herman,
Thanks for this video. It has helped me correct a bad habit. Do you have any plans for a video showing proper alignment while lining up a shot?
