Regarding ML supposedly playing the keyboard, In an interview, ML said they started off carrying and setting up their own instruments at concerts etc. and that was one of the reasons he didn't play an instrument-lazy git!!
@ericebryan If anyone thinks ML is actually 'playing' that keyboard (as is producing coherent music) you probably also think he played the saxaphone solo on Kokomo! ((Directive from ML: keep the camera off my hands so no one can see that I am faking it.))
@gregormann7 He's playing chords with his right hand in the same shuffle time that Brian is playing the piano in -- can't see if he's using his left hand. Other than the two-note honks on "409", I think, and tho' he sometimes did that live, I've never known Love to pick up a saxophone. Theramin, yes. During a '60s performance of "GV" when Love was struggling with it, he called it a "woo-woo machine" and said "It's ridiculous." That prompted Carl to say gently into the mic, "Yeah, it really is."
The video quality is so poor it's hard to see for sure. I may have to reluctantly concede based on observing the other guys (BW & AJ)--I doubt they are faking it just for ML's sake. ((But that doesn't mean that I believe he is playing sax on Kokomo!!! LMAO!))
@alienhuman That's funny. To be fair, he is playing chords. I've only ever known of him honking on a sax and playing an electro-theramin live, so it was a surprise to see him playing chords on a keyboard.
This was one of the three songs Brian performed on Sat Night Live August 1976.
Love Is A Woman and Good Vibrations ( the worst pick they could've made for poor, nervous Brian to do at the piano by himself) were pretty terrible, but Back home came cross musch better with the SNL band and background singers.
Never heard this song before. I really like it a lot! Great beat, great sound. I think I need to buy this CD sooner of later. Every song I hear from it, I like;-)
snoops you did not say "great beard"? Brian and the other really let their hair grew at that time! I recommend the double CD "15 big ones/Love you"!!! A must for all BB fans!
Wow, You guys truly were an amazing group. A group that stood the test of time and still to this day is recognized as one of the greatest acts to grace the world.
I really wish I could have seen you when you toured with Roy Orbison back in 1964 in Australia. Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys were my all time favorite acts.
Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys = American Legends.
Thanks, traderfiles, for this great clip - very rare indeed - and also for this sweet little BW song. Question : what the heck is Mike Love doing in this clip, trying to play organ ? He never could master the sax .. so how could he possibly play organ half-well (except 'for show' or for 'image' in front of the cameras, perhaps ?) Carl once said that Mike was originally lined up to play sax in the band when it first started out - but that Mike never practised. Love that BW grin at the end !!
Brian has always been able to write this kind of catchy song off the top of his head. Simple, but gloriously and brilliantly addictive to listen to - again and again and again ....
Brian really does it for me on this track! Genius.

@colindominy - I think that is Al Jardine on the organ. ML has a guitar around his neck but he is not playing it.

@gamoonbat nope. It's Al beside Bri on guitar, and Mike on organ. Sure wish we had the audio to this. :-)
