I definitely heard that error, and I would have looked right at that person who screwed up. I do it all the time with groups I play with. However, I not into cussing people out and belittling them like Buddy was infamous for.
I guess it was a mistake and it's supposed to be a big deal but if Buddy hadn't turned to look, who would have noticed? I think it sounded good. It was certainly musical. Many time there are "call and answer" parts.
you dont wanna screw up in buddy rich's band, he was a poerfectionist and if you werent perfect he would fire your ass in a second or not even hire you. and if you try to stand up to him, 30 years of martial arts under his belt . "Theres Buddy Rich...and then there's everybody else.
Well, to call this out as two notes, its not, good grief that wasn't two notes. Actually sounded like a little triplet/four note improv fill/run - which fits, but, not his band, and, likely got his arse chewed if not replaced or possibly it wasn't that big of a deal, but it was filmed so likely televised and weight is given to situation where you probably wouldn't want to test the waters of what would happen later.
I own two DW kits and I think Don Lombardi has contributed as much to drumming as any first call veteran player, but to call out someone on a mistake like that serves no purpose.
Let's face it if it really bothered BR the trumpet player has never forgotten it.
I think it was Miles Davis who said if you make a mistake do it again so it seemed planned. If Buddy Rich didn't have this "Giant Ego" and turned toward the guy then the viewers would probabally never have noticed. Yes Rich was great but his ego and his treatment of other muscians at times got in the way. If a musician is capable of playing with Rich then he is of a high caliber. Mistakes do happen but to disrespect another muscian because you are high strung and an ego maniac is not warranted.
@mohomoho1 You are insightful it's probably one of the reasons Buddy had to have his own band. He was a monster player technically unequaled. But if he played in an ensemble where he was an equal and not a leader say Ray Brown, Phil Woods, McCoy Tyner, and Jim Hall he couldn't get away with his attitude.
The world's greatest, at least with his chops? That's all you hear when you listen to him play music? Chops? Yeah he had 'em to spare...he coulda made money sellin' his chops...but it's way deeper than that. Musicality, creativity, endurance, power, subtlety, dynamics, etc. He played better and more intensely in his last years than guys do today in their 20's. I pray I can kick a bass drum when I'm in my sixties and older.
The best in the world doesn't need to tolerate any mistakes. Seriously. He's paying these people. How many mistakes is OK? 2? 10? 50 per night? That's how you stay mediocre America. You're all clearly the "everybody's a winner" generation...
did buddy Rich actually fire band members very often? I know he screamed them out and we've probably all heard the tape where he fires the guy on the spot... but did he always follow this up with action after he calmed down? I have heard he used to release stress by screaming at the band - some people have suggested that maybe sometimes his bark was worse than his bite?
"I've played with the greatest musicians in the world. How dare you play like that for me! How dare you try to play like that for me. A**holes!!"-Buddy Rich
even though it was such a minute problem, buddy rich was an arrogant ass and the smallest mistake could cost you your job, sometimes on the spot. that's why they care so much. the interviewer may not be the greatest musician, but he knows buddy rich. this isn't high school jazz band where if you come in a beat early, your instructor pats you on the shoulder and says "don't worry rusty, you'll get them next time". You're a professional horn player in the Buddy Rich and he'll threaten your life.
@phillyphisig721 Buddy probably needed to spend more time working on his ass personality than someone's wrong note. But yes, he was the greatest, at least with his chops.
The lead trumpet is Lin Biviano, who was (and is) a great player. Buddy had a reputation for getting angry, but rarely (if ever) fired his musicians. Biviano played with Buddy for a lengthy period of time.
And yes, the clam was barely noticeable, but Buddy was a true genius when it came to music, and knew all of the horn parts even though Buddy himself could not read one note of written music.
being understanding of a cack is how music degrades over time. this is why music was better back in the day. guys like buddy were hard workers and there wasnt an excuse for simple mistakes. its like a painting with a misplaced brush stroke. when crap like that gets tolerated, then shit gets sloppy.
For those of you who don't know, Buddy Rich often fired many members from the band based on small or minor mistakes. Also, he was notorious for firing trumpet players. Chances are that mistake got him kicked from the band.
Thanks for the post Drum Channel. I bought the DVD "Up Close" but was wondering if you will release the other portion of the show, with the guest stars, Mel Torme', Lionel Hampton et.? Thank you.
@Lehmann108 yeah for all his great playing, he was really stuck up, i remmber readin an interview saying he never ever copied or had any influences. like seriously man
I can now understand why Buddy would loose his temper with his band. Imagine hearing these mistake Clams over and over and over. This is why Buddy was so professional he could acutely catch these sort of mistakes so quickly qhile hes playing. It took me 3 views to catch this mistake but when you do its SO EVIDENT. Good job Buddy!
buddy rarely fired anyone though, even on a few occasions he told someone they were fired, in the heat of a rage, and then hired them back half an hour later. he was a nice guy, just a perfectionist; and you would need to be when the eyes of the world are upon you
Too funny... the interview guy in black, doesn't even hear it. He just agrees so he doesn't look stupid. "Did you hear it? Yeah...oh no" He didn't hear any mistake, he just stumbled thru the interview.
@GFLJOboss Its not WHAT he did, its who he did it in front of smh listen to the "Buddy Rich - The Bus Tapes (dialouge only)" vidoe on youtube n listen to how buddy reacts to that kinda stuff, if u havent already heard the tapes, hes VERYYYY critical about things. N it wudnt suprise me if he fired the guy afterwards :/
the offending trumpet player wipes his brow, dead giveaway. Buddy didn't throw his sticks or anything, but he looked up and it was understood. "YOU'RE FIRED!"
@BHWR Because lots of little mistakes add up to suck. Let's let everybody make little hardly noticeable mistakes all night long. That's the difference between pro and amateur.
@BHWR they care because for people who knew how tempermental Mr. Rich was, it's hilarious to know that the trumpet player is fucked. He definitely didn't get away from that one without a couple hours of or Buddy screaming relentlessly at him. Possibly fired.
@BHWR They care because Buddy Rich probably chewed him the fuck out. Plus, I believe if you are playing for Buddy Rich, you don't make those types of mistakes.
@BHWR because buddy rich was known for firing people. he believed in nothing but perfection. Its sad, Buddy rich was a really nice guy, but when it came to his music, theres not a bigger ass hole in the world
The amazing thing is.....Buddy caught the guy.... he HEARD the mistake. I'll bet 99% of us would never have even caught that if he didn't look at the guy, and these guys weren't pointing it out. The 2nd guy in the video, even with the set up....has the think about it for a second......damm, Buddy had a good ear.
Lin is a ringer here. He was with Buddy for 4 or 5 yrs in the late 60's-early 70. Lin is one of the great lead players of all time. He swings like mad, and has a ridiculous upper register. And he hates playing it safe. That's why he was on Buddy's VERY short list for something important. Check out 'Something' on the Stick It album for a real old time screamfest. Or his lead tpt work on Maynard's Live at Jimmy's album.
