Falling any more than 30 ft or so would probably kill me, so I'm not sure I'd be any more scared on this bridge than I would be if I were on a bridge that were only a 100ft or so above the ground.
Last time I was there they charged $25/ person to enter. Honestly an abuse because it is a beauty of Colorado and should be more afordable. Golden Gate is free!!
My friend and I went to Royal Bridge one day .We didn't have enough money to go on the bridge,so we went and sat on a big rock with our feet dangling about 1000 feet over the Arkansas river
I as well as my family has been across this bridge in the middle 1970's ,it has still stuck with me and I remember getting rock candy at the end of the incline railway,Pikes peak I will never forget.
It is no longer the world's highest suspension bridge. The Siduhe Bridge in China is 600 feet higher yet - that is if standing in the middle of the Royal Gorge you would be looking up 60 storeys to the underside of the new World's Highest Suspension Bridge. Actually the Royal Gorge Bridge has not been the World's Highest Suspension Bridge for nearly a decade now, but they would never tell you. They even tell you you're 1,053 above the river, but recent laser findings show just 955 - 969 feet.
Actually he did it first with a hobbyist laser range finder, then did it wih a $600 professional grade laser range finder and the readings of the two were only off by two feet. This could easily be explained by the water level at the time. He has used the same devices to measure other known lengths and heights and was spot on.
@A7OldRscplayer I've done my own reasearch on this and you can too! Just look at any US Geological Survey Topographical maps of the area (available on many online mapping sites). You can find that there can be no greater distance than 960 feet bewteen the river contour lines and those where the bridge abutments are placed. With the contour lines being spaced at 40 foot intervals, it actually falls somewhere between 920 and 960. His findings of 955 are therefore within that margin.
@A7OldRscplayer The 969 feet finding was done by the folks at the Royal Gorge themselves after the discovery of the 955 feet by a friend of mine. With the US Geological Survey Topographical findings (no greater than 960 feet) and the Royal Gorge Bridge owners already lying about the 1,053 feet, we suspect they came up with 969 feet as to stay within the top ten in height worldwide. My friend is webmaster at HighestBridges(dot)com and there he keeps a listing of the World's Highest 500 bridges.
Millau viaduct is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world, with one mast's summit at 343 metres (1,125 ft) — slightly taller than the Eiffel Tower and only 37 m (121 ft) shorter than the Empire State Building.
I heard that this bridge claims 3 lives per year - suicides. that's a long way down. 1,053'.....do you really want to end your life that way? Awesome views of the mountains. I recommend this to ANYONE of all ages to go and check out!
youd probably run out of breath before you hit the bottom. besides look on the bright side, your splattered remains will decompose faster! yeah your apart of the cycle of life :)
This bridge is insane! I have been there twice in the last 4 years. I can't get enough of it. I reside in NY, so it is a 27 hours drive, but WELL worth it! We did the lunch train on the Royal Gorge Route and that was awesome as well. I have tons of pics of this bridge and even have several around the house all framed up. The swaying of the bridge, the first time, was very intimidating, but you get over it real quick! I can't wait to go back.
I visited this place twice when I lived in Denver many years ago. Nice to see how things have changed. Funniest thing was a sign "No fishing from bridge", I wonder if that's still there
i went on the little tram thing that takes u across the bridge SO SCARY! i loved it though. we took the Royal Gorge train too and u get to stop rite under it, that was awsome!

That was a scary sight looking at the water from that bridge. My father was scared to death of riding the cable car across the gorge in 1987.
