The choice has been left for me, We march on to Masada,( Peter O Toole.) Can't you see, Its Almost Over. If i can't take back to ROME, Then who Can.( Peter O Toole.)
I own the Mini Series on dvd, WOW, Awesome Score, it gave me Goosebumps when I first saw it in 1980's and again when I got it on Dvd. Also Spectacular Acting by Peter O Toole , Anthony Quale and Peter Strauss. thanks for the Score my friend. They Dont make Epic TV series back then or even Now. We got Tooooo many Reality Shows. Thank Goodness for DVDs and Our Choices to watch.
the wallpaper with those facial expressions really captures what played off in the series,
the roman guy is looking up and almost amused by his task thinking"how do i get them from there...",while the guy on the right is determined to persist no matter what.
Any possibility of watching the whole movie. I also wouldn't mind re-seeing the following movies....Patton,....Lawrence of Arabia,...Tora, Tora....so many truly great historical movies from the past. Ah I also see King Solomons Mines, The Russia House. They sure don't make movies like they use to do. Haven't been to a movie for a long time....nothing really worth spending $15/20 dollars to watch.
Sheer brilliance. I defy anyone who watches this magnificent mini-series not to see the basic similarities between the world then and the world now. Some things never change. And this theme music by Jerry Goldsmith is pitch perfect for the subject matter. He deserved his Emmy, no mistake.
"1 For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Yisrayl, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
3 And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra is awesome for new original arrangements of movie classic scores. best example's are "Red River" and "The Alamo", both original composed by Dimitri Tiomkin.
Both Elmer Bernstein and Jerry Goldsmith used orchestrators on most of their scores and I think it is pointless to compare two masters in their field of film composing.
The account of the siege of Masada was related to Josephus by two women who survived the suicide by hiding inside a cistern along with five children, and repeated Eleazar ben Ya'ir's exhortations to his followers, prior to the mass suicide, verbatim to the Romans. Because Judaism strongly discourages suicide, Josephus reported that the defenders had drawn lots and killed each other in turn, down to the last man, who would be the only one to actually take his own life.
Jerry Goldsmith can take any subject, any event, any story, any characture and his music becomes the focal point to the movie. Take a bad movie and add a Jerry Goldsmith score and now you have a better movie. The man was a master. Only John Williams can come that close to being the equal master. I own a lot of compositions by both and have not heard a bad composition yet by both.
I actually had my bar mitzvah on top of Masada, it was such an incredible experience. All i could think about was how everything must've been like for the Israelis up there, and the movie just came back to my mind from when the Israeli soldiers first went up there, it's just a movie that once you watch it, it just stays with you no matter where you go. There are endless possibilities to think about this: The triumph, the battle, the honor. Absolutely incredible masterpiece by Jerry Goldsmith
This is great music. I think that this was Anthony Quayle's last performance. I recall this as a child seeing Mr. O' Toole as a Roman general saying after all of this effort, in effect...all that I have conquered is a rock...why??? So many lives lost! I do not want anyone's life to be taken from them. People can be horrible, but forgiveness is in the language.
I saw the miniseries on ABC in 1981 & recorded the end theme on audiotape using a mono cassette recorder held up to the TV speaker. I never knew who the composer was until now. Thanks.
Dear Heidi, I'm waiting for an expanded version of Q.B.VII on C.D. too (in fact, it was the first Goldsmith score I heard, for which Pt. 1of the miniseries aired on my 13th birthday!).
I'd love to get the original music Jerry Goldsmith and Morton Stevens did for the miniseries (the LP is a rerecording); Goldsmith was going to score the entire thing, but delays and prior commitments meant he could only do the first half (Stevens scored the rest).
Hey Cindy, I got the original soundtrack when it first came out. Yep, the vinyl one... I still have it my mom's I believe. I could check, but I don't believe Morton Stevens had anything to with the original. It has Jerry's sound to it from start to finish. Even this piece on youtube is not part of the original I have. Lots of added stuff. Anyway, that's my two cents.
My favourite character in the series Masada would have to be Pomponius Falco. Inccidently , wahy do the Jews get the upbeat and energetic music and the poor bloody romans have to make do with that dirge of a march?
Jerry Goldsmith is one of my movie music gods! I was a kid when I saw the sprawling miniseries. I had a thing for Barbara Carerra at the time! This brings back memories! I had the soundtrack on cassette tape and it's been so long lost it's not even funny! The whole score was/is awesome! He had a way with orchestration and intriguing instrument choices! He was a great composer. One of the absolute, undeniable best! Thank you for posting this.
Man, I was so young when they played the movie on TV. I remember watching it one whole month (one part per week). I've loved the theme ever since. Great movie, great composer.
Hacía más de veinte años que buscaba la sintonía de esta serie que retenía en mi memoria desde la infancia. Es más espectacular aún de lo que la recordaba
Excellent post. More than a great composer. Many of the films he scored were not worthy of his music which is okay, because most of his music stands alone just fine :)
I remember buying this record when the miniseries first came on tv. I loved it and the series. Jerry Goldsmith, in my opinion, was a great composer. He came up with so many great scores. And this one is no exception. With all the percussion, tamborines and horns, it's almost like he and the orchestra are actually JAMMIN. Anyway, may he rest in peace. He is surely missed.
Un film cu muzica superba. Jerry Goldsmith, unul din cei mai buni compozitori pe care l-au avut S.U.A.
