Which is better for the money? The Large Heavy Bowie by Ka-Bar, or, the SP 5? I like the both of them and they are around the same price. I just need user advice.

hello veri, got the knives in on friday march 18th. super fast shipping from the ontario knife store. just a very long wait for backordered items. am happy with the knives and the prices. thanks again to you and nutn' for all your hard work!
hello veri, i called ontario knife store this am and got very good customer service. unfortunately 2 of the knives i ordered are on backorder and the entire order is delayed till mid march. not a big deal. i just wanted to know what was going on and now i do. i guess someone on the web side dropped the ball in responding to my emails. thank you for your response as well. a big thanks to NUTN' and you for all the hard work you do. i really enjoy his vids and life POU.
is anyone else having problems with ontario-knife-store? i ordered and paid for 3 knives on 2-4-11 and have not got them yet. i emailed 2 times asking about the order but was not answered by them. i guess i'll give it a little more time then try to get my money back if they dont sent my order.
@hoodrat61 Have you tried calling them to press the issue? Its only been two weeks since your initial order, but you might be able to get a tracking number or some info about what's going on. -- Veri
yes! This makes sense because when I get older and have a son I'm going to say "Johnny when you get older I want you to grow up to have a big knife! You know nothing makes a dad more proud than when his child can chop stuff. You'll show those Flanderson boys next door who's fat then won't you kiddo!?" Johnny: Yup daddy! Me: There's a good boy, now run along and play with my home made grenades I made for ya!
I have owned the SP5 for fifteen years now. I don't go into the woods with out it. I've cut down hard wood trees, split fire wood and used it as a camp cooking knife. The sheath is still in great shape and the blade has never chipped. A great deal of the black coating on the blade has worn off though. A little felco tool oil keeps it clean n slippery. I have a feeling the SP5 will be with me for the rest of my life.
The wieght is not bad on this one. Great knife. Man, I'm glad you've made these videos. I've seen others, but they just play around with the blade and talk about how cool it is. They never really put some explination behind it's purpose or even take the time to compare it to other blades. I saw one guy's video where he was just swinging one of these in the woods clumsy as hell. I hope more people realize what they're getting before they buy. Not just because it looks cool.
I bought one of these at a surplus store new for $20 but he didn't have the sheath. Thought I would be able to get one easy but I can't find one. Any idea of a sheath that will fit this blade?
hey dude, cool videos. I'm a trained knife fighter - and by that I don't mean I'm some sort of ninja, I just mean I've been trained to do it a fair bit - basically long blades don't really help - can totally see where you coming from - but length wouldn't much come into it for something the size you'd call a survival knife. Swords - yeah reach is important - knives - no - so long as it's long enough to get into someone body deep enough to do some real fast acting damage - you'll be stabbing them
The statistics for knife-related deaths are somewhere around 30 stab wounds per person. I know people that have been stabbed 7 times in the ribs. Unless you have a thick knife, stabbing is almost useless. The wound cavity will shrink shut and swell, stopping the bleeding within minutes.
@TheJoshy1992 I understand this. But they're probably going to be covering their throat and neck with their arms, and with a 2.5 pound bowie like the Ontario SP10 marine raider... Wait, what arm?
@hotsteamypudding Cutting? Thats not going to stop anyone that truely intends to kill you, unless you cut their throat or major arteries. small knifes cut , but Bowie knives dismember. Its hard to fight back with no hand, a severed coller bone, split ribs, cleaved skull, or no limb, versus fighting back with a few bleeding cuts, because you will have to wait for adequate blood loss to take effect, and with adrenaline probably wouldn't feel much pain.
@Southern661 - you're talking much more about a sword fight here I think - in which case, yeah size definitely counts - but in knife fighting the purpose is to physically get hold of whoever you're actually fighting and stab or slice open their throat (wide blades are good). You may think this would be difficult to do when someone has a machete type blade but their are several martial arts focussed on disarming people carrying large blades. Difficult to disarm someone of a small(ish) knife.
I picked up a slightly older one of these entirely (all nylon sheath, slightly differeng grind) on this review, and used it this past weekend on a camping trip with buddies. While they were dorking around with a folding hand saw and hatchet, I was annihilating logs with my SP5, and making a huge stack of fire wood. The thing just cuts like it was made for it. They only slight down side was the sharpened back clip tore up the baton stick a bit. GREAT BLADE! And WD40 makes a huge difference.
@555nato your right sog used to be (sog specality knives) thats when they were U.S. made . .a question for nuttinfancy sp5 or ka-bar heavy bowie whats better over-all knife back to nato i guess we shouldnt expect any different when the same company changes hands like the weather
Ontario has discontinued the sp5 so get it while you can! They will continue to make the sp10.Soon the choice will be the sp10 or the Ka-bar heavy bowie. Jon
I was in debate, the K-B heavy, the sp5, or sp10.I got the sp10 from SMKW. I LOVE my sp5. Truth is I`m crazy enought to own them ALL if I could! I don`t hear much about K-B cutlass or kukri (Cam. has kukri now too) but I`m sure I`d like those too!!! Jon.
I talked to them at the co. they said it was simply a slow seller. There aren`t that many options in the sp5 catagory so it must not be a hot catagory. But I love mine!
sorry I ment that I got the sp5. and love it!! I have a western w49 which is to simuler to the sp10 which is simply a thicker blade. But I`ll tell you that w49 is a CHOPPER!!! And I love the swing style sheaths too.
To waterproof the leather I like "Snowseal" . I`ts beeswax so Iit dosen`t deteriorate natural or synthetic stiches or dry out the leather. I melt a small amount then heat up the leather witha blow dryer and aply melted Snowseal on hot leather. This really penetrates the leather. Be sure to wipe off ALL extra wax. Then I also aply it to the inside of the sheath with gun cleaning rod.Again wipe off exsece wax. This makes water JUMP off your sheath! Jon.
The sp10 is heavier than the sp5 so a better chopper. And a better piont for thrusting, and a hand guard both for offence and defence.I love both swing sheaths. The sp5 is lighter and easier to carry and will baton throught about everything. Many many knives without hand guards have been used well in battle. And lets be real, look at the tip of the sp5, not as pointy as the sp10 but do you really think you couldn`t thrust that into someone? Jon.
one guy claimed the SP5 was a better chopper than the SP10,which could very well be true.the SP5 is flat grind.and the SP10 sabre.your W49 looks good too man :-)
I think full flat or convex grind IS a better chopper. If both knives are the same wieght. When they have a VERY short grid back from the edge this makes a wedge effect and inhibets chopping power (depth). But both the sp10 and the Western w49 have there edges groung way back and are there for good choppers. You get foot lbs presure on inpact from volocity or mass. But speed reaches a max. point but you can always add more mass. So no matter what, mass CAN at some point win over speed or grind!
Good way to look at it my man! What exciting new knife will they make ( that I`ll jusy HAVE to have) that will piss my wife off further! Just kidding shes GREAT!
it's like lives of humans.we die and others will come.its a bit sad thatgood things go.but that gives space for even possibly better things to come.the flat grind is defenitely a good chopper.
Thank you for your videos, really helped me decide on a very good knife. I got the SP5 and it rocks, i have taken it on all sorts of camp outs and its performance is incredible.
6:33 to 6:44 ,well said Nutnfancy.I had a Tops MAk-7 ,what a joke of a dagger that was.way too thick edges and point.also disturbing chisellike butt jabbing into my hand.
look at knifetest.the tip of the 'famous' ranger broke fairly easy compared to a so often scoffed at cheap stainless(440C,not bad at all in my opinion) steel S&W.
Great review. You should do a review of the Ontario SP1. It looks alot like a regular Ka-Bar but its handle and guard are one solid piece. Ive been wondering how good it is compared to the regular Ka-Bar.
i'm impressed with this knife, thanx 2 this review...somewhere around 40-50 bucks and u get a 10 inch bladed knife!!! wow,now that rocks...and not only that but 1 that is actually reliable knowing that it is made by Ontario...i'm completely sold 4 this knife until i review the rest of the knives u did reviews on...keep it rockin nutn
I find that a small knife , a big knife and a pocket saw add up to the sme wieght as a knife and hand axe but is more versitle. Don`t got me wrong I have 5 hachets and plenty of use for them!
According to your Info this is an overseas made knife, which I think is incorrect. It is made in the USA? I think people might be mis-led by that comment.
pcolvario, he must have showed the part on the blade that said "Ontario USA" several times. Ontario is a military knife supplier that also sells knives to civilians. All their Spec Plus stuff like this is made in the USA (as stamped on the blade!).
also got a buck nighthawk.. dont know why I bought it.. just look cool.. I don`t like to use it.. blade are more for combat I think.. sp5 is a better all round.. nighthawk`s blade are to tick.. sp5 cut bread like a pro.. easy to get sharp... +++ gerber multitool and sp5 is what I use when I go out on my snowmobile.. If a wild animal jump me it will get a real fight..
I have owned sp5 for 17years.. love it.. people where I live think only the norwegian sami knife are good.. I think they are pice of shit.. wood handle that break, and no finger guard, blade that rust.. most of the time my knife are used like a small axe.. nice steel.. I have hit rock with it so hard that it made large sparks in daylite.. 5min work and it is sharp again.. other knifes I have owned break if i hit a rock with full power.. people say my steel don`t sound right.. paint does that..
What an awesome knife!!! The only difference between a custom knife is the fit and finish. The functionality remains the same. I can't say enough great things about my SP5... Once again Nutn, helped me pick out a great piece of gear!!! Thanks so much for getting this good info out there!!! BTW I was backpacking with an eagle scout. He couldn't get a fire going in the damp conditions... I showed him the Nutnfancy way, and sure enough.... success! Thanks for all you do bro!
Just bought this knife and it failed me within the first day of survival training.
I believe the thin edge is not ment for excesive tree harvesting out of the box. To be sure it got the job done. however there was a large chip out of the blade after one day of shelter construction.
tree dont make large chip out of carbon steel.. you hit a rock.. my 17year old sp5 are sharper than new.. I have also hit rocks some times.. never got a chip out of it.. had to make it sharp 4-5 times last 17 year.. but that is normal when I use it like axe... I had more large chips break of my carpenter axe..
The outcast is made of D2. Some think D2 is no good for impacting (to brittle) But Kershaw seems to kown how to treat it right.Outcast handle is to small for my big paws anyhow. Jon
I got one for a pig hunting trip, my friends got a Marine Raider and Ka Bar Large Heavy Bowie. Very comfortable on the hip for such a big blade and carries amazingly well. Made in the USA like the Raider but when comparing the Ontarios to the Taiwanese made Ka Bar the quality of manufacture is not even close, the Taiwanese made Ka Bar is far better made. Paint and finish clearly better and much sharper out of the box. I like the blade shape of the Ka Bar better although its inch shorter.
45$ for that knife is very cheap man! I´d like to see it in the boonies doing some chopping and batoning! Too bad I got some other priority knives in my list now! Great review Nutn! As always!
Now I have one more knife to add to my wish list. The Ontario SP10 and Marine Raider both have caught my eye and are in the running against each other. Now the SP5 has joined the race. I think out of the three the SP5 might fit more overall roles and duties between Survival and combat knife. I might be wrong!?!
I just want to point out the knife is made in the USA. You state in the info box it is an oversea produced knife. It is not (As of 04-09-2009) produced overseas, per the Ontario web site. It is still made in the Good Old USA!!!
good knife. I use it for splitting mesquite chunks when I smoke pulled pork (makes for better smoke flavor) got a couple of small chips in it from extreme use, but I was able to hand grind 'em out most the way w/ arkansas stone.
adamrosio08: I think the SP5... but i have not tryed the KaBar knife as much as the sp5, becorse i like the sp5 and it does alot of good for you when you need a long blade
Hey, nutnfancy, i want to create a surival duffel bag just in case shit hits the fan, i was recently looking at the Ka-bar cutlass, to throw in it, but i cant find any reviews for it online or videos, have you seen that knife at all?
It's nice to see a review on an afordable knife for a change. I see alot of my ARMY budies are biased twords expensive knives by Benchmade, MOD and Gerber. If the knife works use it. My question is if the Woodsmans Pal is any good or if it's just a useless gimic. I see it advertised everywhere and I'm wondering if it's worth it. If anyone has used one plese let me know what you think about it. Thank you.
Went looking for some of these today, the SP5, the SP10 or the KA-Bar Heavy Bowie. A local military surplus shop carried the Ontarios for $90 !!! Ouch.
Nutnfancy, I see you are putting a liking to the large fixed blades. Very nice. Ka-bar and Ontario both are offering a very good value. Just a quick note both of these company's are based in my home state. Cool. Keep the great reviews comming. Hope you can get to the outdoors and put some of these new blades to use pretty soon. Take it easy. Jet over and out
Jet, just for your future reference. If you intend to use military radio speak, don't say over and out. It is equivalent to saying, Ok you can talk now shut up. Another one that people get wrong, is "rodger wilco", it is said either rodger or wilco, not both. Both words mean the same thing and it is redundant to say it. One last one is " I repeat." It is properly said "I say again" Only artillery and firearms repeat. I tell you this to help you avoid sounding silly around real soldiers.
I am a former FO, radio transmission for the purpose of calling in air support, artillery fire, and at one time naval gunfire is my specialty. You can be quite sure I know much more about proper usage of military radio speak than an Officer. Officer's give general orders. I don't know how many officers I had to correct in my time of service over these very same things. There is a reason that particular skills are specialized. WO and NCO's make it happen, officers only indicated what they want.
No I am not referring to Nutnfancy as this is his channel. It was a reply to Jet. Mr Fancy knows I am correct about this wether or not he chimes in on it. It isn't to be a prick it is just a simple fact of military speak.
I'm sure there are phrases that you use improperly without knowing it. Maybe you go to an auto mechanic, a doctor, or maybe an electrician, and you use phrases that are wrong or misleading. Such as I have "heart burn". My point is that you don't have come across as a snobish "know-it-all". NF is simply reviewing a knife - you don't need to start picking apart every single phrase and word that he uses. Relax and lighten-up dude.
another awesome review. Hey NF... I notice you are wearing a Casio GSchock which is sweet. Since a durable and accurate watch is a critical peice of outdoor and survival gear, would you consider adding watch reviews to your repertoire?
Please respond.
Which is better for the money? The Large Heavy Bowie by Ka-Bar, or, the SP 5? I like the both of them and they are around the same price. I just need user advice.
Thanks.

6:33 to 6:44 ,well said Nutnfancy.I had a Tops MAk-7 ,what a joke of a dagger that was.way too thick edges and point.also disturbing chisellike butt jabbing into my hand.

Hey what is your guys opinion on 5160 steel that ontario uses?
KatanaFish213 2 years ago
look at knifetest.the tip of the 'famous' ranger broke fairly easy compared to a so often scoffed at cheap stainless(440C,not bad at all in my opinion) steel S&W.
RRFF12345 2 years ago
the ranger has a thick blade but a tip like a kitchen knife which is bad combo.
RRFF12345 2 years ago
It`s not so much the metal in those that are simuler as the way it`s treated. If done well ALL those high carbons are fine! Jon

I prefer a small knife for gutting and skinning deer and a small axe for wood chopping.
dave777blaster 2 years ago 3
I find that a small knife , a big knife and a pocket saw add up to the sme wieght as a knife and hand axe but is more versitle. Don`t got me wrong I have 5 hachets and plenty of use for them!

According to your Info this is an overseas made knife, which I think is incorrect. It is made in the USA? I think people might be mis-led by that comment.
pcolvario 2 years ago 14
pcolvario, he must have showed the part on the blade that said "Ontario USA" several times. Ontario is a military knife supplier that also sells knives to civilians. All their Spec Plus stuff like this is made in the USA (as stamped on the blade!).

@pcolvario i thought it was made in Canada?

also got a buck nighthawk.. dont know why I bought it.. just look cool.. If a wild animal jump me it will get a real fight..
vectraB97 2 years ago
I have owned sp5 for 17years.. love it.. people where I live think only the norwegian sami knife are good.. I think they are pice of shit.. wood handle that break, and no finger guard, blade that rust.. most of the time my knife are used like a small axe.. nice steel.. I have hit rock with it so hard that it made large sparks in daylite.. 5min work and it is sharp again.. other knifes I have owned break if i hit a rock with full power.. people say my steel don`t sound right.. paint does that..

Just bought one for 41$. Looking forward to getting it in the mail... thx nutn

Stigandir 2 years ago
tree dont make large chip out of carbon steel.. you hit a rock.. my 17year old sp5 are sharper than new..

Haha keep up the great work man.

Hoffa3381 2 years ago
I just want to point out the knife is made in the USA. You state in the info box it is an oversea produced knife. It is not (As of 04-09-2009) produced overseas, per the Ontario web site. It is still made in the Good Old USA!!!

Thanks for this terrific video and channel!

good knife. I use it for splitting mesquite chunks when I smoke pulled pork (makes for better smoke flavor) got a couple of small chips in it from extreme use, but I was able to hand grind 'em out most the way w/ arkansas stone.

Nutn, One question.....KBAR LHB, or SP5?
adamrosio08 3 years ago 6
adamrosio08: I think the SP5... but i have not tryed the KaBar knife as much as the sp5, becorse i like the sp5 and it does alot of good for you when you need a long blade

Thank you.

I bought mine 12 years ago and the sheath was all cordura. Also, why do youthink the taskforce is just as heavy but shorter?

Went looking for some of these today, the SP5, the SP10 or the KA-Bar Heavy Bowie. A local military surplus shop carried the Ontarios for $90 !!! Ouch.

Nutnfancy, I see you are putting a liking to the large fixed blades. Very nice. Ka-bar and Ontario both are offering a very good value. Just a quick note both of these company's are based in my home state. Cool. Keep the great reviews comming. Hope you can get to the outdoors and put some of these new blades to use pretty soon. Take it easy. Jet over and out
jetfuel545 3 years ago 2
Jet, just for your future reference. If you intend to use military radio speak, don't say over and out. It is equivalent to saying, Ok you can talk now shut up. Another one that people get wrong, is "rodger wilco", it is said either rodger or wilco, not both. Both words mean the same thing and it is redundant to say it. One last one is " I repeat." It is properly said "I say again" Only artillery and firearms repeat. I tell you this to help you avoid sounding silly around real soldiers.
hrwulf 2 years ago
Real soldiers? Are you talking about Nutnfancy? He's a lieutenant colonel in the air force.
relicen1 2 years ago
I am a former FO, radio transmission for the purpose of calling in air support, artillery fire, and at one time naval gunfire is my specialty. You can be quite sure I know much more about proper usage of military radio speak than an Officer. Officer's give general orders. I don't know how many officers I had to correct in my time of service over these very same things. There is a reason that particular skills are specialized. WO and NCO's make it happen, officers only indicated what they want.
hrwulf 2 years ago
No I am not referring to Nutnfancy as this is his channel. It was a reply to Jet. Mr Fancy knows I am correct about this wether or not he chimes in on it. It isn't to be a prick it is just a simple fact of military speak.
hrwulf 2 years ago
I'm sure there are phrases that you use improperly without knowing it. Maybe you go to an auto mechanic, a doctor, or maybe an electrician, and you use phrases that are wrong or misleading. Such as I have "heart burn". My point is that you don't have come across as a snobish "know-it-all". NF is simply reviewing a knife - you don't need to start picking apart every single phrase and word that he uses. Relax and lighten-up dude.
bsumiko 2 years ago
Who cares.
kstangent 2 years ago
another awesome review. Hey NF... I notice you are wearing a Casio GSchock which is sweet. Since a durable and accurate watch is a critical peice of outdoor and survival gear, would you consider adding watch reviews to your repertoire?
