Great comments on this video. I'd also like to draw attention to Jim Hall's great accompaniment. He leaves space for the track to swing, which is an art in itself.
@icecreamforcrowhurst in my book, he's number one. (maybe i'm biased because i wrote my thesis on his work?) 'comps like a pianist and solos like Prez. i tell my guitar students to always take his example- play the instrument like you're not a guitarist.
Excellent Paul Desmond. One of jazz's true originals; the whole group plays great but for me, Paul Desmond at his best blows my mind; he had concepts all his own
One more amazing thing about listening to fine jazz on youtube: (apart from the magnificent music of course) just have a look at comments. Polite ways of presenting opinions, respect towards other users... Now try a pop song.
Result: love this music, love people who listen to it.
Connie Kay, yeah! Being a drummer. I can appreciate his mastery of the instrument, dynamics especially. I had to see him live to see how great he was, in terms of Ease of playing. To me he played like a great card dealer in Las Vegas. Basically flicking out licks from his wrists and fingers, not much arm movement. You don't get this as well from recordings. Soooo, tasteful. Yes and what a band here. all Masters!
A bit of trivia - at the end of the performance the drummer hits the cymbal and it flies off the stand and crashes to the floor. They kept the take anyway. [from the liner notes of the vinyl Album]
Unbelievably soothing and cool. Awesome. The best. Miles Davis said (1950's) that he didn't care for the way Paul Desmond played. OK Miles, I don't care what you think---I'd rather listen to Chet Baker or Clifford Brown anyway.
i'm happy to see that someone is bringing the people to hear this wonderful saxophonist! thank u for that! there should a lot more appreciation for such wonderful music!
Thankyou otaku3, I havn't heard this before ,I heard some of his work with Brubeck and have never been disappointed by any of the other recordings he made.
Beautiful track. State the melody, blow, state the melody, a little tag and out. Classic jazz. I love the way Jim Hall lays out for Paul Desmond's first chorus and comps so discreetly for the next two choruses. The guitar solo is a marvelous mix of single notes and chords and much space. Lovely swinging lines by Eugene Cherico on bass and Connie Kay's transparent ride cymbal and snare drum comping. Four thoughtful musicians playing separately and together at the same time. Jazz lives.

... a good example of why Jim Hall (as modest and unassuming as he is) ought to be in anyone's top 5 best jazz guitarists of all time.

Wow. This is incredible. Desmond and Hall are perfect partners, as are Cherico, and the awesome, underrated Connie Kay.
Thanks for posting this!

Thanks da19lila38-san!!
I agree with your comment.
But I think that this album and "First Place Again" are superior in Paul's solo works.

I agree. It makes it seem more intense, less things there to get in the way so you can really sink your teeth into Pauls amazing sound and style.
