Linux is a powerful platform, but for high end super computing, you'll need more ram to run multiple threads well. I don't care if it does have a 9 cores of processing power, Processors don't mean anything if you don't have the ram to back them up.

Linux gaming is even worse on the PS3. The ATI Card is locked down and Wine won't work on PowerPC. The newest thing that you can run on PS3 Linux is Super Nintendo.

I agree pretty much any PS3 can do all that, except the backward compatibility and certain things included, not included like with mine only one controller was included. I have the 40GB model. Sony should have marketed the PS3 with all the things you said then I think it would have sold lots more at launch like what they are doing with the slim now explaining that it does everything. Although its still selling very well now.

my xbox has 1tb HDD XSATA with two partitions 500gb each obviously one half is running windows 7 and the other xbox firmware i upgraded the RAM to 4 gb and the processor to a quad core so it's fast as your going to run to walmart to buy one... right now im working on decrypting the security on the MU slot to turn it into a Card Reader for Usb sd and all that Jazz LOL

no way. ps3 has a power computer architecture. it's so much different than x86-32 and -64 or amd's architecture. also, you are limitted by the ram inside the ps3. even ubuntu lags in ps3 if you run resource-eating processes

gaming consoles i have found are good to be used as web servers. i have apache2, php, mysql server setup on my xbox 360. its fast as hell doing a job like that. anything else and its not really that quick.

xbox360 has 512 ram and im always using about 50% with ubuntu 7.10

if i could get yellow dog on it it may be better since its newer. ubuntu dont want to touch PPC arcitecture any more. PS3 and xbox 360 have the same design cpu - ps3 is more developed i.e +power +better

PS3 and Xbox360 don't have the same cpu design, far from it! I'm currently developing a game in xna for the xbox and it's far from the same as ps3. ps3 has cell cpu which use dma, xbox got xenos cpu and both got different is. i use my ps3 for cracking strong algorithms :)

80GB's use software emulation to run SOME PS2 games. The 60GB actually has a complete PS2 built into it! The 60GB is a much more robust machine. I got one available right now.

Yeah you are right. I looked that up and there are some games that don't run as good on the PS3 emulators. The Metal Gear Solid 4 version PS3 has the software emulator and the 60gb NTSC (North America version) PS3 has the PS2 hardware emotion engine built into it. I'm gonna get this one off ebay then replace the hard drive.
