Did any one find out the deal with the low rpm problem? I just bought one haven't had on water yet but it misses and sputters at more than half throttle. Air fuel mix? Throttle cable adjust? Or is it bc there is no load on the prop?
I just got my 5hp just like this, but it seems like a lemon.
I warmed up the engine for more than 5 minutes, but when I crank up the rpm, it miss fires and the motor shakes. I can only keep the motor on low rpm.
briggs and stratton outboards do not have a water pump. they are a great engine.reliable.sure they vibrate a bit but check out any big name outboard brand single cylinder motors and the all vibrate.
can you tell me can you use this in the dea as i was told it fresh water only, the thing is if it does'nt have a water pump would it make a differance? if fresh water or salt water.
B&S does not recommend using their engine in salt water unfortunately. I think it is due more to the fact that it does not have the zinc anodes that typical outboards have, versus the water cooling system
Just double and tripple checked mine and There is no inlet or outlet for any type of pump. Ive got several water cooled out boards and its obvious where the water inlet is on those, but there is not one on this briggs.
What would it have a water pump for? Its an air cooled engine, why would they want water pumping in the lower unit? The lower unit is full of oil. I for the life of my cant understand what you are talking about. There are no holes anywhere on the lower unit where it would intake water and even if there were where would it go?
my 5.5 hp ted williams outboard, wich is air cooled it even has the air manifolds,it has a impeller in the shaft, and theres a tale tale hole were the exaust comes out, it shoots out water and ive checked if theres a water pump and theres a 1 inch in it
Thats the differene. The Ted Williams is much different. These dont run the exhaust out in the water either. These are nothing more than a 5hp briggs eninge connected to a shaft with into a gearbox with another shaft and prop. There is no impeller on the briggs, I looked in the parts break down diagram. You can run it out of the water all day and not hurt a thing.
Thanks for the great vid---- I want one of these motors and am always looking to see things run before buying. Looks real good to me---especialy for the price!
hey a vid of it in the water would be great. Im looking to get one of these motors for my 10 foot flat bottom jon boat and am wondering about the power compared to other similar rated motors but there isn't much in the way of videos of these motors. I've heard mostly good reviews about them but have yet to see one perform on the water. Can't wait till you make a vid of it.
awesome. I hope to get my 10 foot jon boat in the water sometime soon. Right now it's got a tiny 1953 atlas royal 3hp on it and I want to upgrde and with the crazy prices of small outboards these days, i'm anxious to see how the briggs and stratton compares to more expensive outboards of the same hp catagory.
I think they should have routed the exhaust into the water. That would have made it quieter.

I like it.

The rev limiter will cause it to miss and shutter. In the water, it will run fine.

In follow up now that I've had mine in the water... The engine does bot hit the rev limiter under load (in water).

a friend has one and his did that.if you still have a warranty have them fix it.his was a bad rev limiter.

I'm having the same exact problem. What did you find out?

sounds like the carb needs adjusting. If you have a warranty, just take it back.

The salt water will eat all the parts, other than that it should be OK for salt water.

even though its air colled, have you ever considered that that still has a water pump for the shaft because it does have a water pump

hey putting water to the intake would be good so you dont burn out the water pump impeller
Snowcrossqueen 3 years ago
Its not water cooled, air cooled..

I like the idea of an air cooled engine. You don't have to worry about an impeller.
