  • viren was amazing at the 10000. however pre would have won the 5000 if he were still alive

  • Pre was young, and passed away at a young age,

  • You see at 00:35 How he hid behind people and then try at his last lap? And Pre dident do that!

  • @NoWarMakePeace Viren won four gold medals. Pre didn't do that!

  • @YiftertheShifter1 no shit he only participated in one event..

  • @heresjohnnnyy1 Your point being? Pre focused on that one event, and in his one chance he was defeated. Viren had both events to work on both times, and both times he romped on top. And your expectation that Pre would've won is simply laughable. Didn't you watch the Montreal 5000m? Amazing performance, amazing win. There's no point in denying Viren's legend: he simply was the best here.

  • @NoWarMakePeace That's because Pre was a PUSSY, and waited until the last MILE to make a move...

  • Lasse on paras näin selvällä suomen kielellä

  • The second half of this race was in 13:31.4, 18.4 seconds outside the 5000m world record. Not until the 10000m in 2003 Paris world championships would the second 5K be as close to the 5000m WR (12:57 to 12:39.36). In fact, the 13:31.4 was a mere 6-7 seconds slower than Viren's winning 5000m at these games.

  • Kuka toi äijän pärstä on kun välillä näkyy?

  • No ei taida olla minkään äijän pärstä kun itse Lasse Viren...

  • If Steve Prefontaine ran the 10,000 meters. He would have placed 2nd in this race.

  • Viren was number one in 72 and 76. He kept control of the races he took part in both Olympic Games. In Moscow with three hundred meters to go he lost to Miruts Yifter, another great kicker. Front runners like Bedford and Pre, do not have any chance before such characters, unless they dictate the ritm from the beggining. I firmly believe that Pre could have reach world records, but Viren was in another league at his prime, no doubt.

  • And not only did Viren beat Quax and Dixon in the 5000 meter final in Montreal: he beat them at their own game since Viren's time on the last 1500 meters would have placed him 4th in the 1500-meter final at those olympics. Like you said: "who is faster at the end, and who can put it together." And after upsettingg the Kiwis at their expertise, he decided to run the marathon THE FOLLOWING DAY an challenge Frank Shorter at his expertise. Finished 5th and under 2 minutes from Shorter's time.

  • I could not agree with you more!

  • why don't American fans are more caught up with U.S runners David Wottle and Frank Shorter (gold medal winners in Munich '72's 800meters and marathon). Why this obsession with "Pre should have won... Viren cheated... in '76 Pre would have beaten Viren, etc etc" I honestly don't get it

  • viren was not blood doped

  • Viren was the ultimate tactician. He also had teriffic speed to go with it.

  • @prporter1

    No.

He just was a blood doper.

  • @schusterlehrling He was as much as Shorter and Prefontaine were, wasn't he?

  • @prporter1 Many Finnish sportmen and ladies are doing a big mistake if they dont run or skiies with high speed in the trainings. Bryggare was known from his high speed in his trainings, always puts up 110% in his every training. There have to use also a common sense as i mean if u trains without pause and way too hard it runs you to trouble for sure. Many Finnish runners and cross country skiiers trains with low speeds which is a mistake.

  • @MrJuha82 This is true. even though there is a time for slow training, for base, there is no mistake that speed training is essential- as long as the goal is to get from point "A" to point "B" faster than the other guy, speed training is a must!

  • I've been seeing some people on youtube saying that Viren blood doped. Is that true?

I just know this comment is going to be "thumbs-downed" a hundred times, but I'm only asking a question because I don't know the truth.

  • I agree, Pre was a cheater

  • Yeah, that darn ol' Viren. Not much of a runner, was he? All those world records, and all those Olympic gold medals. So "pointless." I gues someone should have told him that his objective of winning the gold was all wrong. What was he even thinking?!?

Only ignorant Americans say Viren had no effect on running. Around the rest of the WORLD, except America, Viren is a god.

And if Pre had gone out harder, he still would have gotten drilled by three, if not four, runners.

  • Only an ignorant AMERICAN would ask, "What has Viren done to running?" He brought the 5 and 10 to international prominance the WORLD OVER. Oh, I forgot- you only notice what the American press shows you. And, not EVERYONE can, by sitting back and going for the win with 400 left. Just the fastest and/or the smartest tactician can. Gammoudi, Stewart, Quax, Hildebrandt, and Dixon couldn't ,and they all were RIPPING FAST.- as Viren was in 72 and 76. You are such a DUMBASS.

  • No, you are an American DUMBASS who knows NOTHING about running outside of the US. You don't even have a CLUE about it in Europe. Go do your high school front running, keep getting 4th place, and retire a LOSER.

  • You are absolutely right. Viren's coach said, that Lasse's popularity was incredible. In countries, like Japan etc. people really thought of him as god. I wonder, why not in US? OK... Pre was like a pop star in America and I understand, why people think highly of him. Still, I think that this doping bullshit about Viren really sucks. He is such a humble person ! He never spoke bad about anybody. He just let the running do the talking.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss

Maybe Viren should have focused on the marathon in 1980... he might have gotten another medal to go with his 4 golds.

  • @knightsxc06 ..You may be right- I'm sure he would have brought home some hardware! I think though, he stayed on the track, because that was where his heart was....

  • A race only can be win in the last lap, in the last 200m, in the last 100m, in the last meter. A winner WIN a race in the final line. All the runners know that. Pre was a great runner, but he fault in the tactic. Why he slow down the last 200m? I think he lost energy, Gammudi made a tremendous final rush (sorprising to Pre), and Viren, save energy to the last 120m. It is a tactical, Viren could save "air" to do his move in the correct time. See 1500m Munich, another tactical race also.

  • and don't forget Gammoudi was 34 in 1972!

  • viren le gano a un monstruo de los angeles 84 winner marathon ....el gran ...CARLOS LOPES

  • onse k5

  • Vaikka olenkin suomalainen(ja lujasti!) diggasin aina tuota vihreähousuista vauhtiveikkoa. Voitti sitten kultaa maratonilla Lopissa -84 ja veti 2.07.13 Rotterdamissa -85. Lassen ura jäi tavallaan kesken:-((

  • good job viren. 2 gold medals again 4 years later and an even better time.

  • On se kova jätkä..
