On this date in 1957 {Feb. 23rd} "Party Doll" entered Billboard's Best Seller's chart; on March 30th it peaked at #1 {for 1 week} and spent 23 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 13th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1957 chart...
Recorded in same studios that Buddy Holly recorded in Clovis, NM
Other 1957 charted versions; Steve Lawrence {#5}, Wingy Manone {#56}, and Roy Brown {#89}
Non-charted cover versions; The Crests and The Fleetwoods...
i think jimmy bowen is the other guitar player. his recording was with the 'rhtym orchids ' of im stickin with you is probably the same band doing party doll
this was the first "45" i ever bought, never gotten tired of hearing it. thank you for posting it, and glad to hear that others feel the same. bless you!
@emb1st: I just realized that Bowen's song is called "I'm Stickin' With You". Sorry, but it's been a long time since I thought about these old recordings.
@emb1st: Yes, I think it is Jimmy Bowen, before he recorded " BeBop I Love You Baby" which I also have down in the crawl space of my basement along with this recording. I still remember, I nearly got a detention in grade nine for trying to copy the drum solo of "Bebop" on my desk at school when the teacher was facing the black board.
I still have this record ( a 45 rpm) down in the crawl space of my basement after about 54 years. It took me a bout one second to learn the 'blazing' guitar solo. LOL
Hey I remember buying those packs too! A lot of mine had this little hole punched through right beside the big one. Don't what that meant...they played just fine.
I can remember when this song was 'banned' at our high school for being 'too suggestive'.....truly. I am that old. Of course, we all loved it, the song and Buddy, all that much more!!
@Bandtrip50 It was a wonderful time to be young. Two of my friends were suspended from highschool for 2 days for..............wearing too many crinolines. :) Yup. The 'rule' was only one and they chose to wear three.
Had to nip that rebellion in the bud. Crinolines. I love finding this music on YouTube.....brings back such fine memories!
He came through to our home town in the mid-fifties and did a concert that I was fortunate to attend. Still remember the drummer do his little gimmick of twirling the drumsticks every now and then. Watch for it at the 33 and 52 second marks.
Buddy Knox is a great pioneer. The first time I heard his record Party Doll he was Lt. Buddy Knox. I wish his career had continued longer, but what he gave us was a tremendous gift.
Wow ! When I'm thinking about problems/dilemmas the name of a song will come to me later and when I check out the lyrics I discover a message of some kind. This happened to me the other day and the song was "Party Doll"... Thanks for the video, I feel better now.
Tucker, this reminded me of our little high school band "The Infernos." What fun memories! But, we never had any hit records and did not make it to Ed Sullivan or other places like that. Actually if I remember correctly Donnie Lanier & Jimmy Bowen used to come to our house and practice some as they were classmates and friends with my brother & sister.
dotgumm, I, too, went to college at WTSU with Buddy, double-dated with him, and sang with him in his Serernaders when we sang to the coeds at night under their dorm windows. This was during his last couple of years there. Perhaps you and I knew one another. I knew his sister, Verdie, and met his parents in Canyon. I also had lived in Happy TX but didn't really get to know him until our college years.

@BOBFORDD No....sadly he was taken by cancer about 10 years ago......my son booked his last show here in Sequim, Washington.........he was a great guy.we loved him........Pearl
I believe Buddy's lead guitar player in this clip is Donnie Lanier from Dumas, Texas. Donnie later became a very successful songwriter and had his songs recorded by many great singers.
Oh that Buddy was so special - we went to college together at West Texas State - we were good friends and I have a picture of him with me in a water ballet show we put on.
Jimmy Bowen was a busy producer in Nashville in the 1990s with Garth, George Strait, Reba and Hank Jr.....he ahd Garth fought who was more in tune with the Country audience.....now retired with wife Ginger in Hawaii
@joybird25 Actually, Bowen worked for Sinatra at his Reprise Records. I met him while he, Buddy, and I were in college together. He was annoying and couldn't sing - or play bass - worth a damn; Buddy 'carried' him. Incidentally, Bill Dees, who co-wrote more than 60 of Roy Orbison's recordings was a student there, too. We keep in touch.
The guy behind Buddy on the bass fiddle is Jimmy Bowen. He had a hit of his own in 1957 called "I'm Stickin' With You" and later produced albums for Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
