argh i miss mark and bands like morphine, bands with balls to sound way differently from what the major market is offering. and rarely, the interviewer knows what she's talkin' about D:
The first time that I saw a morphine video, was early to bed. I was a child too and since that first time, I cannot put it out of my head. And now, I dont want to.
Mark always reminds me of a person who "has the answers" and is withholding back from you ....and yet , i think he is brutally honest . He is disarming { to me } and yet i would trust that he would be nothing but sincere .....no excitability about him - thats refreshing ....it was all substance , hence , why the music moved you so powerfully .....or...could be - HE JUST FUCKIN ROCKED , low rock baby !
Mark makes it sound so easy, like explaining how to play base, "i gradually promoted myself to play on two strings " ^^, what an ape.. Luckely i'm just barely able enough to realise he's f**ckin brilliant. and all his songs.. Love and piece m8..
I fell in love with Morphine at the first time I heard them. It was "Buena". I thought then that it must be a very famous band, cuz the song is just too amazing. It seems very strange that not so many people know of them, even in the USA, not to speak of Russia, where I'm from. I tried to find a band that makes "something like Morphine", but gave up not long after: what these guys made is just too unique.
i loved morphine....such and underrated band that would have deserved becoming as famous as the stones or the beatles, imho the only indie band that had something to say ...what a style what a unique sound....
That was a great interview. I notice he's a lot more patient in answering questions about the band's orchestration and how he came up with the two-string slide base when a pretty woman is asking them. :-p
@mistabook (it's spelled Bass), and he really didn't answer her question about how he came up with it or the instrumentation of the band, he just says we tried it and we liked it basically.
@mistabook is complaining about it that important? when you're a bassist, it's really irritating, most people don't even know that it's different from a guitar. just trying to spread bass awareness among the populace. I ignore typos online, that's the one I felt compelled to correct. sorry if I bothered you so.
let's not forget the genius drumming of the original drummer , mr. jerome " can make a car horn groove" deupree !!!!!!!! he played on "good","cure for pain " and "the night !" amazing player and great all around guy !!
What he says is true. By being minimalist you open yourself up to greater possibilities than going with the standard line up or way of writing. You are being forced to be original because of the limitations. Sonic Youth do this by using odd tunings.
Morphine was such a perfect band. There was never anything in the music that didn't belong. The poetry of the lyrics, the soul of Mark's voice, the baritone sax. I was so incredibly sad when I heard that he died. Thanks for posting this.
thanks for this upload, Mark Sandman is a genious of music. by listening to his songs and reading a bit about him, he looked like a man that could help people grow just through his words.
