as a make up artist i know the difference between bleaching and a good airbrushing and she is air brushed for an even complexion body paint that is just like make up which can be removed afterwards although she was never dark in the first place
Edit: FYI- Most celebrities who use skin lighteners to bleach their skin do it gradually and it normally is unnoticeable to the public. These products that they use are EXTREMELY safe btw. A lot of people on here don't understand much about skin lightening products and how they work...
Rihanna is still by far my favorite singer ever since she first came out. But, I'm not going to be blinded by fan-boy-ism and pretend she's not lol. She was a caramel color when she first came out now she looks white.
I believe Rihanna is using skin lightening product to lighten her skin. I don't understand how people are so blinded by the fact that she isn't. Its what a lot of African-american celebrities do. Beyonce did it, Tyra banks does it even rihanna now does it. No one is saying that its wrong. People are free to do what they want with there skin. The fact is they do it. They discreetly lighten there skin with products not available to the public. There is a dramatic difference in her skin tone.

Honestly I don't think she lightened her skin tone at all. She is an islander who happens to live in country with four seasons hence she doesn't get sun all the time. I for one am an islander and one thing I know about my skin is that in the winter I tend to get lighter and paler than usual from lack of sun. However in the summer I get my natural tone back.
There are some pretty retarded people on these comments, she may be using a cream she may not be. HOWEVER i am on average a medium beige tone, in the winter i get so pale u would think i was sick and in the summer i get darker than Leona Lewis AND I am of caribbean decent. shes from teh caribean yeh? if so its possible shes did lighten her skins, Its all the rage in jamica and caribean to use bleach and creams on theior skins to lighten it. Loads of people do it there, some take it too far and end up scarred . Theres this chemical , that they use in the cream, not very expensive but , its banned in most countries but can still get it in some countries like Jamica, India etc.

its great that you took your photography course but as any non white skinned person will tell you, me included that their skin does appear lighter in different lighting.
and yes skin does tan (get darker) with prolonged sun exposure but that has no relevance to taking a photo under different lighting conditions

before rihanna was a huge star her skin was always light. even looking at her videos from way back its obvious. In the caribbean we are mixed with influences from different ethnicities. there are many different shades of black some of us are very light and some are very dark. don't get it why people have this idea that because you're Caribbean then you have to be very dark, and if you are not then its always some big conspiracy as to why they are lighter. ancestry has everything to do with it
Rihanna doesn't whiten her skin. She travels to alot of places that don't get sun as much as Barbados and these photos of her being darker are all from the very start of her career, when she didn't travel as much. Also I seen one of the comments about the lighting used in the pictures of her with light skin, which is true. People shouldn't always believe what they read or see on the internet. She has also done interviews stating that she would get bullied in school because of her lighter skin.

exactly - and look at her eyes (which are not contacts) I saw Rihanna in person when she came to Much Music I could see at her hip when she moved and her white shorts moved it was SO MUCH lighter where here shorts were then her exposed skin, when you see her in person the make up was so caked on and dark, she uses make up to not looked washed out just like Mariah Carey & Sofia Vegara, its BS I know 1st hand

Yes, when you "go on vacation" meaning temporarily... you get tan... temporarily. "Tan" meaning darker than your normal color. Whereas this girl was her NORMAL color for a while after having left her home.... then out of the blue she's as pale as Tisha Campbell. @c4real1 Thats very difficult to do, turn dark to light..its easier turning light to dark. It also doesnt look suitable. You cant do that to pics, Beyonce has always been light so seeing he rlight doesnt shock anyone. Even in cosmetics, its hard/close to impossible to lighten up a color, its easier to have a light color and add drops of dark red to lighten it, rather than starting with dark red and having to add globs of white to lighten it. hhhh, anywho :/

Also when I lived in Jamaica for a year then came back to England people never reconised me because I was so dark. true what rockinpoison89 say. i am from the west indies my brothers and sisters are all shades., people dont think we are family. my sisters came to the U.S.A two years before me. when i saw them they were very light. the same happened to me. this i also remembered , after a year in U.S the summer sun felt twice as hot and i had sun burn for the first time in my life.

Light skinned people's melanin fluctuates according to climate and exposure to sun. I was greek olive tone when born, then I got medium brown then lighted again to a darker than greek tan, then stayed out of the sun for 10 years and went practically translucent. Now I am medium tan and getting darker every year:)
She used to live in Barbados where the weather was hot, then she moved to NY and of course her skin color changed too that's normal. One more thing, the skin color can change when you grow up. I used to be very tanned when i was younger and now my skin is getting lighter and lighter throught the years and i've never bleached my skin, it's just natural.

Honestly I don't think she lightened her skin tone at all. She is an islander who happens to live in country with four seasons hence she doesn't get sun all the time. I for one am an islander and one thing I know about my skin is that in the winter I tend to get lighter and paler than usual from lack of sun. However in the summer I get my natural tone back.

before rihanna was a huge star her skin was always light. even looking at her videos from way back its obvious. In the caribbean we are mixed with influences from different ethnicities. there are many different shades of black some of us are very light and some are very dark. don't get it why people have this idea that because you're Caribbean then you have to be very dark, and if you are not then its always some big conspiracy as to why they are lighter. ancestry has everything to do with it

Rihanna doesn't whiten her skin. She travels to alot of places that don't get sun as much as Barbados and these photos of her being darker are all from the very start of her career, when she didn't travel as much. Also I seen one of the comments about the lighting used in the pictures of her with light skin, which is true. People shouldn't always believe what they read or see on the internet. She has also done interviews stating that she would get bullied in school because of her lighter skin.

Yes, when you "go on vacation" meaning temporarily... you get tan... temporarily. "Tan" meaning darker than your normal color. Light skinned people's melanin fluctuates according to climate and exposure to sun. I was greek olive tone when born, then I got medium brown then lighted again to a darker than greek tan, then stayed out of the sun for 10 years and went practically translucent. Now I am medium tan and getting darker every year:)

I used to be very tanned when i was younger and now my skin is getting lighter and lighter throught the years and i've never bleached my skin, it's just natural.

@rockinpoison89 not true, it's not natural for a black person to have white skin, people don't get lighter skin growing usually it's the other way, if it happened to you that's because you're trying to get lighter skin through some ways.

@provoable You know, skin's evolution depends on people, we all so different and change differently through years. In my case I've never used any bleaching product, I don't give a shit abt it and I absolutly do not trust in the effectiveness of such products as anti age products, that is silly.
