The only clowns who call it soccer are the americans. It's called football everywhere else and is the biggest sport in the world. So in my eyes, it's football.

@cheeseymenolikey In my line of work, I have lived in Tokyo for two years and spent several months in Taipei, Seoul, Bangkok and Hong Kong and they all call it Soccer, Or in Japan's case, "Sakka". South Africa's league is the "Premier Soccer League" and the World Cup Final was held in "Soccer City". The word was also wildly used in England up until the 1970's until it was incorrectly linked with the USA because of the NASL. It's sad how little the English know about their own sport.

My friend, modern day football league originates from the set up of The Football Association in London in 1863.The word soccer appears in the periphery with regards to history. Also, football refers to any game which involves kicking a ball and imo the greatest team sport there is today deserves to be called just that - football. Plus, Your profile says you're from England and that comment is on an English server. Soccer is supposed to unite the world as one, which is what makes it the greatest game on earth. However, It is being ruined by ignorant Europeans who believe they own the game and everyone should do exactly as Europe says and does. They need to learn that other countries have their own cultures.

@Headcheezonium if it's so widely used, why is the governing body called FIFA? governing body of association FOOTBALL btw. lol @ your comment about european ruining football. ask any football fan and they will say real football is played in the champions league, EPL, La liga, serie A etc. Football may be a global game, but it's principal theatre is Europe. Serie A is a corrupt disgrace that can't fill half a stadium and the champions league is basically owned by Barcelona, as we saw in 2009 against Chelsea. European Soccer, or as you call it, Football, is a disgrace to the game with overpaid players, corrupt officials and bad play acting. I'll stick to my J.League and MLS. They care about the game and not the money.

That alone gives you no right to whine about what we call it. Our football was termed because of how long the ball was, a foot. Obviously we aren't going to call the sports the same thing. It's really not a big deal that in separate parts of the world people refer to a sport by a different name. It will never change so I suggest you get over it.
