@cheeseymenolikey The word "Soccer" Originated in Oxford, England and It's called "Soccer" in South Africa and most of Asia. Why isn't anyone yelling at them?
@Headcheezonium really? most of asia? I live in asia and people call it football. It's referred to as soccer on TV because the coverage is by american companies like ESPN. The only clowns who call it soccer are the americans. It's called football everywhere else and is the biggest sport in the world. So in my eyes, it's football.
@cheeseymenolikey In my line of work, I have lived in Tokyo for two years and spent several months in Taipei, Seoul, Bangkok and Hong Kong and they all call it Soccer, Or in Japan's case, "Sakka". South Africa's league is the "Premier Soccer League" and the World Cup Final was held in "Soccer City". The word was also wildly used in England up until the 1970's until it was incorrectly linked with the USA because of the NASL. It's sad how little the English know about their own sport.
@Headcheezonium so you're saying the word "soccer" was used from the start? My friend, modern day football league originates from the set up of The Football Association in London in 1863.The word soccer appears in the periphery with regards to history. Also, football refers to any game which involves kicking a ball and imo the greatest team sport there is today deserves to be called just that - football. Also, how "sad" of you to assume that I'm english. Run along now....
@cheeseymenolikey I never said it was originally named "Soccer". I said it is a wildly used term all over the world. Plus, Your profile says you're from England and that comment is on an English server. Soccer is supposed to unite the world as one, which is what makes it the greatest game on earth. However, It is being ruined by ignorant Europeans who believe they own the game and everyone should do exactly as Europe says and does. They need to learn that other countries have their own cultures.
@Headcheezonium if it's so widely used, why is the governing body called FIFA? governing body of association FOOTBALL btw. lol @ your comment about european ruining football. ask any football fan and they will say real football is played in the champions league, EPL, La liga, serie A etc. Football may be a global game, but it's principal theatre is Europe. Until that changes, I'm afraid you're going to have to live with european "ignorance" and it will be "ruled" by europe.
@cheeseymenolikey Ah. More ignorance. The EPL is 4 semi-good teams and 16 crap teams. Spain is 2 amazing teams and 18 crap teams. Serie A is a corrupt disgrace that can't fill half a stadium and the champions league is basically owned by Barcelona, as we saw in 2009 against Chelsea. European Soccer, or as you call it, Football, is a disgrace to the game with overpaid players, corrupt officials and bad play acting. I'll stick to my J.League and MLS. They care about the game and not the money.
@cheeseymenolikey You probably don't even watch soccer. If you can't see all the idiocy and disgrace that is European football, you must be either blind or trolling.
@InsaneTuga Are you going to get on the case of Australians who call it soccer? (they aren't called the "footballroos" are they? Nope, they're the "socceroos") How about South Africans (after all, the 2010 World Cup final was held in SOCCER CITY), Japanese also call it soccer, as well as Canadians. Heck, the Italians call it something differently altogether, "calcio", the Italian word meaning "to kick"
@InsaneTuga number one, we already have a sport here we call football, calling two sports that would be confusing, and number 2 whats wrong with the word soccer?? its just short for association (as in association football), not like there should be anything wrong with calling it that..besides the full name of rugby is rugby football, and i don't see u guys complaining about that
Well, maybe because we dont call Rugby football like you Americans call your american football. WHy dont you call American football Soccer or some other name that would make alot more sense than callign it football and I think anyone could see that...
@lightingstike haha okay, if you can manage to convince a population of 350+ million to start calling american football soccer, then by all means ill call it that, until then stop bitching
@morange492 once you experience football like a real fan, you will know why we get so annoyed about it. try to see the movie "green street hooligans", its not to prove anything but i think it does serve well as an example. really, see it. is about an american that comes to europe and thinks baseball is the best xD
@InsaneTuga yeah and that attitude is why we'll really never give a crap that you guys are annoyed about it. And to be honest, I've met plenty of people from other countries who are football fans who think its kind of silly but really could give two shits what we call it... so yeah im going to go ahead and keep calling it soccer, instead of listening to some random youtube user tell me otherwise
@InsaneTuga you idiot, I know other people are calling you out on it but the term was coined in England, the nation that started this sport. That alone gives you no right to whine about what we call it. Our football was termed because of how long the ball was, a foot. Obviously we aren't going to call the sports the same thing. It's really not a big deal that in separate parts of the world people refer to a sport by a different name. It will never change so I suggest you get over it.
Is this the game when the Union come back and tie it 4-4? Because that game was nuts.
