  • This is such a beautiful performance. There's something so feminine and sensual about it, but also something vulnerable and protective. And I love the emotional nakedness in the lyrics. Good to know some women CAN write lyrics above the emotional level of an infant, which (sadly) is the norm nowadays.

  • Natalie you are amazing

  • When i feel cold and void of all emotions and feelings due to the harshness of this life we are forced to live you bring back the color warmth and feeling to this world of mine with just your voice Natalie. Could never thank you enough.

  • God I love Natalie Merchant.

    She's so depressed, she's beautiful.

  • Too bad she's a snob. Beautiful voice though.

  • Beautiful, dignified, smart, and talented. Any questions?

  • A woman who can write music and sing is an incredible turn on. Don't you think?

  • For Alan Beel R.I.P.

  • @Cyberella1000 Who is Alan Beel?

  • Jevetta Steele singing backup here and the studio version

  • ketsup red and mustard yellow great combo fashion wise....and what a perfect back up singer...who is she

  • Remember the mid 90's when there were enough jobs to go around that you could even pick and choose?

  • @LeFatCobra yes and i had so much spending money it was sick..those were the days,

  • I fell in love with Natalie after this performance.

  • Enchanting as [expletive deleted].

  • Love MY GirL! A LaDy with so much Class! :D

  • this woman is awesome, she has it all that im lookin for , beautiful on the inside and out. perfect hair, lips, gracious poise and a centerfold figure. natalie can i take you to dinner and a movie?

  • great music to fall asleep to...

  • gran grupo

  • the kind of female voice that made sailors in past times sail onto the rocky shoals.

  • I have come back to this video more times than i can count...that voice is intoxicating....oh and the ketsup and mustard colors are kind of cool too.

  • No it is not Jolene Brebeouf

it is Jevetta Steele singing background, she was the original background singer on the original recording of this song as well

Jevetta Steele was famous at the time for singing CALLING YOU, the theme song of the film BAGDAD CAFE

  • @glenv10000 I had actually written to Natalie Merchant at the time, and she wrote me back a handwritten letter talking about Jevetta, saying in one word, that Jevetta and her voice were "magnificent"...........

  • @glenv10000 Thanks I was wondering who she was.

  • What a voice!!!

  • I am such a fan...

  • Perfect feminine tenderness from Natalie.

  • This song is just brilliant.

  • I fell in love with Natalie years ago...so much tenderness in her voice..

  • "Why let your shoulders bend when my back is sturdy and strong" Trouble Me thank you Natalie for the music. Where is "Peace Train" it was her favorite that she sang before she left 10,000 maniacs? THEY EVEN PUT A VIDEO ON TV OF THE SONG, it is the song that turned me on to Natalie's beautiful voice.

  • @snazinhouston i heard the opposite natalie had a problem with some of cat stevens beliefs and therefore never played the song again... a great cover thoo imo although the whole album In my Tribe is fantastic and natalie is in great form on this video just beautiful

  • awesome video and the back up singer is very good.

  • @hanseltl I have just been notified that the Back up singer is named Javetta Steele famous for singing Calling You from The movie Baghdad Cafe.

  • @MBOYA22 wow thanks for that info i'll check out that movie and google her name.

  • @hanseltl Your Welcome sir but I found out from Glenv10000 wee should all Thank him

  • OK..first off...LOVED this version. Natalie rocks!!! Forgive me for not reading the previous umpteen jillion comments, but I'm asking (respectfully) what the lady singing backup's name is?????? The two of them were great together....

  • @wevetra13 I agree 100 fold they are simply.......well you already said it best.

  • @wevetra13 her name is Jolene Brebeouf she's French Canadian married to French rap artist DPlo.

  • 1:13 Absolutely gorgeous

  • One thing to point out this is [now] indeed a vintage clip---21 years ago, to be exact. At the time when there was really no internet, let alone dial up, no HDTV, DVD or digital media outside of the CD that existed. Thus this is a great VHS or broadcast posting on YouTube (even I'm impressed).

And yes, Natalie was really in her prime here.

  • @JimmBailey Bravo Jimm. I agree that this is a great video and Natalie Merchant is just (SIGH) awesome. I love the back up singer also. Very very very good.

  • A throwback to the old artists. Every one of her songs advocate, illuminates, and reminds us of the important things! Natalie ROCK! Her talent is so deep and wide. she will be one of the few from this generation whom children will hear on the "odlies" station and say "My parent's played that music!",

  • this is the best live version of this song I heard..I love Natalie, sometimes she can get a little laid back and sing her songs any old kind of way...but then sometimes she like she is here..really into it...fantastic..!!!

  • She is one the greatest talent's in the history of music. I couldnt Imagine being a member of her band and not being hopelessly in love with her.

  • This song is really a duet. Natalie at many points in this performance makes eye contact with our talented backup singer. Terrific song.

  • @crayrail I had to give your comment a thumbs up cray. The connection that the two of them have is awesome especially with the moment they share from 2:11-2:18.

  • @MBOYA22 thanks man

  • @crayrail The talented back up singer is named Javetta Steele

  • so adorable Natalie. For life.

  • Makes me think of my brother, he likes this song...love ya bro!!

  • also, she must be losing her voice or something b/c she leaves out a few choice notes in the song. been there. she's probably annoyed with herself. :(

  • of course she's pissed... i rarely have been to a performance of hers when she was in a good mood. STILL love her, of course... but she used to have a good time. ANYWAYS, she's pissed b/c the BAND is screwing up the song numerous times in this performance.

  • @My1Lament I believe the video itself has a few glitches in it making the band seem as if it is making mistakes but maybe Im wrong I think its the video.

  • @MBOYA22 It is the video.

  • I love this performance. It's great that there is the other singer to do the harmonies. I just can't get over some of the faces that Natalie makes during the performance. I think she's just trying to maintain composure in front of the camera, but it almost seems like she's upset at one point, she touches her fore head.....

  • I feel like a right plum... I've only just discovered this band. I guess it's better late than never and all that... Their songs withstand repeated listening, now that is fookin rare these days... Natalie's a delight!

  • This group changed my life

  • Awesome! This song is amazing and hearing and seeing real talent is a rare treat!!!!!

  • She is Great

  • wow

  • I wish more people had this kind of attitude... of helping loved ones.

"Why let your shoulders bend when my back is sturdy and strong."

  • hope so too love everything natalie the older i grow the more i love her .she is beyond

  • @hotboi79a agreed in full

  • natalie......speak to me

  • wow she looks awesome in that Red dress..so sexy

  • NM has a one in a million charismatic charm and soul reaching voice. Im glad the pan to David Letterman is at the end of the video. He must have a soft spot in her heart for her, how couldnt he after her multiple appearances and Im sure Paul Shafer probably reves about her.

  • @YamaZingerQT60

I agree with you about Dave's soft spot for Natalie, but I also believe there is no mystery behind his show having the best of the best of all great musicians and music on his show. He loves the music.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • NM is beautiful in so many ways.

  • The backup singer is fuckin' up.

  • @brandondallas yeah, she`s on something

  • I think of this song a lot.

  • This is for my Mom who died from a Morphine implant and they let her out the same day for her back problems.. I wanted her to know ill do anything but she is a classis LEO

  • I feel for you....when you cry in the dark....your mother is trying to comfort you....let her............

  • Don't be troubled......She, like my own mother, was her own women. She knew you were there. PEACE

  • I ADORE Natalie!! Her voice is beyond comparison!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Natalie. She commands the stage with

great body movement and her vocal style is

beyond reproach. Trouble me is a challenge

on acoustic guitar, but asside from that I simply

have to hear this song frequently to survive.

  • I sang campfilre song with her twice. in 89 and 90 with the maniacs. in philadelphia. no joke. the first time was better because she let me finish the song. crowd went maaaad

  • Trouble me ;)

  • Vaceslos49 she can trouble me any day !!!!!!

  • god, i love this song. i wish i could go back to the year this video was made and freeze time. Life was simpler, and happier, back then. Before 9/11.

  • graet song , thanx

  • Trouble me, disturb me with all your cares and you worries.

Trouble me on the days when you feel spent.

Why let your shoulders bend underneath this burden when my back is sturdy and strong?

    Trouble me.

  • it's like you wrote this song. thank you, my maniac xo

  • Those are great lyrics.

  • Speak to me, don't mislead me, the calm I feel means a storm is swelling;

there's no telling where it starts or how it ends.

Speak to me, why are you building this thick brick wall to defend me when your silence is my greatest fear?

Why let your shoulders bend underneath this burden when my back is sturdy and strong?

    Speak to me.

  • Let me have a look inside these eyes while I'm learning.

Please don't hide them just because of tears.

Let me send you off to sleep with a "There, there, now stop your turning and tossing."

Let me know where the hurt is and how to heal.

  • Spare me? Don't spare me anything troubling.

Trouble me, disturb me with all your cares and you worries.

Speak to me and let our words build a shelter from the storm.

Lastly, let me know what I can mend.

There's more, honestly, than my sweet friend, you can see.

Trust is what I'm offering if you trouble me.
